A Great (Big) Summer Tote

I love shopping for a new bag of any kind, but the summer tote bag is of utmost importance.  Anyone who has children in tow, whether it be to the pool, beach or lake, knows that the bag can make or break your fun day in the sun.  When you’re holding small hands and carrying 2 or 3 large, inflatable pool toys- everything else must go in the bag.  For us that usually includes 3 or 4 towels, sunscreen, change of clohtes, snacks, water bottles, water or beach toys, etc.  So, it’s great to have a stylish bag, but even more important to have an enormous bag.  If you can find both in one (and even fit it over your shoulder), then you’re set to have a seriously great summer.  Here are some to consider…

 A Great (Big) Summer Tote

1.  Oilcloth Tote Bags available in many colors and sizes (and they’re monogramable, too!)  at Tatermash in Tulsa  2.  Water Resistant bag from Bungalow  3.  Vintage Mexican Straw Tote from Etsy    4.  Sailor Girl Print on the sturdy and durable classic from L.L. Bean  5.  Large, lightweight fabric tote by DKNY available at Zappos  6.  Ikat linen canvas tote by Theodora and Callum available at Neiman Marcus  7.  Tote made from recycled sails by Angela Adams and Sea Bags for J.Crew.

Shandy time

Happy Memorial Day!

Hopefully, weather permitting, you are at the lake or lounging by the pool on this long weekend.

No matter where you are, it’s a great time for a new, refreshing drink. May I introduce you to the Shandy.

It’s literally a two-step drink — half beer and half carbonated lemonade.

It’s great for the girl who likes an occasional beer, but doesn’t want the heaviness of it. Sarah and I indulged in these during the Super Bowl and they were delish.

For beer, I chose Boulevard Wheat, which is made in Kansas City, Mo. It’s refreshing and has a light citrus flavor.

Next, add a splash (or more) of the sour and sweet sparkling lemonade — my choice is San Pellegrino Limonata. Pucker up!

And voila! Summer’s here. Enjoy and have a safe weekend.

Happy (Long) Weekend!

So this isn’t exactly what I’ll be doing this weekend, but you get the gist.  We are looking forward to a relaxing few days, a little pool time and getting a few long overdue house projects done!  Next week all the Hive girls will be kicking it into high gear to get Issue One up and ready for you, so today might be my last chance to rest for a while!

A few things I found this week that you might enjoy….

First and foremost, I left a helmet off my bike style post this week.  I know, I know.  Then I remembered this.

Can someone please teach me how to do this to my hair?  Seriously.

A great way to jazz up Mason jars for a summer party.

To-go Caprese! Really want to try this.

What would you take if your house was burning?  Interesting website showing what others choose…

And on a much lighter note…Have I mentioned how much I like quirky S&P shakers?  Found these this week on Oh Joy! and might have to make it happen.

Wherever your weekend takes you, have a great one!

Meet Brady Heights

I love my neighborhood. I live north of downtown Tulsa in an area built largely from 1905 to the mid-1920′s.  While I technically live in an addition coined Grandview Place II, I consider my neighborhood the area south of Pine Street, west of Cincinnati, north of Fairview (or the IDL) and east of the LL Tisdale Expressway (area highlighted by dotted turquoise line).

Meet Brady HeightsI wasn’t searching for a new place to live in Tulsa, but found myself leaving work downtown and driving up Denver to wander around Reservoir Hill (another much-loved neighborhood for a future post) and came across this house.  Let me tell you, there was not much to look at, the yard was hidden under 4′ of debris and overgrown and the house similarly held lots of collections and various items.  It had been in a somewhat dis-assembled state with no kitchen and various other “remodeling” projects.  And we went for it.  The neighborhood that is.  We felt a possibility here that I have not encountered in many other parts of Tulsa.  It was here that I felt we could truly make a difference.  When it is all said and done, we may end up only saving a handful of properties, but I will be proud of that.

I have trouble writing about my dreams for this place.  There is so much potential in this small space.  We are within 10 minutes of Tulsa Country Club, OSU Tulsa, River Parks, Blue Dome District, Brady Arts District, Driller’s Stadium, the BOK Center, Gilcrease Museum, the Osage Hills and the Oklahoma Centennial Botanical Gardens.  Most of these are within 2 minutes or less.  I haven’t even started to mention things like this but I have to stop here or you won’t even read to the good stuff.

A little about Brady Heights Historic District.  It encompasses parts of the following neighborhood districts which are in the southwest section of the outlined area above.  Hail, North Tulsa, Burgess, Brady Heights and Pouder and Pomeroy.  Grandview Place II is one block north.  The district is bordered to the east by parts of Hail and North Tulsa but most of the land is now vacant lots and is owned by University Center and Tulsa Authority.  I think this is our lost link for providing a true pedestrian and biking experience to downtown. Talk about potential, I only wish I could show you how it appears in my dreams – a mixed use zone with residential, retail, and grocery markets.

The Historic District includes a variety of architectural styles including Folk Victorian, Foursquare, Georgia Revival, Folk Queen Anne, Italian Renaissance Revival, Prairie School, a Neoclassic Mansion, Dutch Colonial and Craftsman Bungalow. The variety can be found throughout my neighborhood, although outside of the district may not be quite as grand or preserved, yet certainly attainable (meaning: come buy one!).  I do appreciate and understand the convenience of living in a newly built house, but yearn for the diversity these homes provide.  If you haven’t driven through this area in awhile, take a spin. You’ll pass 4 churches, a community garden, a couple of commercial buildings (one of which hopes to be a grocery store someday) and all of the architectural styles I mentioned above.

The history here is rich and although some sad and disappointing, quite fascinating and enlightening.  We still have a chance to save these places and be the city we were on the path to be, to enjoy our city to the full potential. I believe we are still that first-tier boom town city, and are finding our way back.

I apologize for lack of pictures of my neighborhood.  Please explore starting from the Brady Heights website and if local, take a drive in and around downtown.  I think many Tulsans would be surprised by their findings.

Memorial Day Must Have’s

Memorial Day….the beginning of summer for most people!  Whether you make it to the lake, beach, a back yard pool, or the local splash pad, here are some items that will be useful while you are out in the sun.

Beach towel…but not any beach towel.  This towel is from the local Jenks company, Get Down Towel.  With hardware on each corner of the towel, you are able to attach the towel to a boat deck or lounge chair.  This is especially handy here in Oklahoma with all of the crazy wind.  No more chasing after your towel!

You can’t forget the sunscreen!  I love the continuous spray kind.  No more getting your hands all yucky from slathering it on you and the kiddos.  A simple spray down and you are good to go.  There are many different kinds available, this just happens to be one that I use.

A must while out in the sun is always drinks and snacks!  This is a great cooler from Crate and Barrel that isn’t too big or too small.  Perfect size for throwing in an afternoons worth of goodies.  And, how about that great orange color!

Memorial Day evening usually consists of a big grill out for my family.  You name it and we have got it on the grill.  Well, how about a cute tablescape with these beauties?

Target’s Calypso line of products is way too cute.  From dishes and pillows in the home section to clothing and accessories…all beautiful colors and patterns.  With the dishes being plastic you get a great look and you don’t have to worry about them being broken.  You could throw together an outside seating area and use these, or pack them up and take them on a picnic.

Hope everyone has a fun and relaxing Memorial Day Weekend!

Chaos Simplified

Organizing is one of my favorite pastimes.  It’s true.  And sad.  The clothes in my closet are hung in color order, and my sock drawer is organized in the same manner.  I’m a list maker.  Don’t put it past me to make a list of all the lists I need to make.  I could spend all day in an office supply store, wandering around and dreaming of just how organized my home would be if I had this pretty binder or those colorful paper clips.  I need help.  It’s gotten so bad that a couple of birthdays ago I actually asked for (and received) two things – a label maker and a day planner.  True story.

I do have a phone that could also be used for list-making, schedule keeping, etc., and I have tried using it exclusively.  But I couldn’t hang.  I’m just a ‘like to physically cross it off the list’ kind of girl.  I currently have 3 notebooks in my (giant) purse:  my day planner, a long term to-do and to-buy notebook, and one in which I keep my Prairie Hive notes and blog ideas.  Always looking for new organizing tools that I could put to use, I’m a sucker for notebooks and anything that can create a list.  And if you add happy colors and a whimsical design to it… I’m sold!  Here are a few items I have come across recently that have caught my eye.

Check out this cute business card holder/address file box.  A fun way to spice up such a mundane part of life.

Cruisin’

SVbike Cruisin

So here’s the deal: I’m not much of a bike person.  I think there may be an incident in my youth that I’ve blocked from my memory, but really  - between my lack of coordination, propensity for random injuries and preference for wearing skirts – it’s just never been my thing. So when my husband (who is an avid cyclist) pulled our cruisers out of storage last weekend, I admit, I cringed a little.

Though he assures me we will only be riding slowly through the neighborhood, I’ve decided that the best way to get on board with one of his favorite hobbies – is to make this bike (and myself) so cute that I can’t NOT get on it.

So here we go – my wish list for a picturesque ride to the park for a picnic, complete with sparkly handles, a bell that says what’s usually on my mind, and a retro scarf to tie in my hair.

Red Sparkle Finger Groove Grips, Electra Bike 5. Cherie Saddle, Electra Bike  6.Tulsa Bike Tee, Dwelling Spaces 7. WTF Bike Bell, SpokeNWheel on Etsy 8. Puma Espera Shoes, The Glass Slipper.

With all this cuteness, how could I resist?  Happy Riding, everyone!

Meet the Hive – Lisa W.

Hi, I’m Lisa- the final member of the Prairie Hive team. I was once a High School teacher (French and Latin). Now, I work part time as a fashion consultant. I am a horse lover, in recent years I’ve become a runner (still a shock to me), I’m an experienced shopper (I call it “retail research”), I’m a novice drummer (although the drums have been quiet for quite awhile now) and I love to plan parties. But most of all, I am a wife and a mother of three beautiful children. My husband and children are of course the center of my life, so they have influenced me more than anything.

I love design, but as a non-professional it has taken me a long time to gain confidence in my abilities. I like so many styles, I thought I was just confused! Maybe I am, but I finally feel like I have found a way to pull it all together. I really believe that if you stick with what you love and try not to compromise (too much), you will really create something cohesive and unique. My style is a little quirky and eclectic which jives perfectly with the needs and personalities of my family. We have what we need (slip-covered, washable couches and floors already the color of dirt), what we cherish (1st finger paintings and seashells from our trips to the beach) and my attempt to incorporate “style” (lamps which no one in their right mind would shoot with a Nerf gun). Our home is definitely a reflection of who lives in it. There is nothing more rewarding than designing a space for the people you love.

The word prairie makes me happy. It reminds me of family vacations in the car, farms and sunshine and all of the other things I would love to escape to. And it reminds me of Oklahoma which I am so proud to call home and excited to feature in Prairie Hive!

Sack attack

I’ll be the first to admit, I’m not really a trendsetter — but I’ll happily follow them if they seem to stick. And that’s how I fell for the old burlap sack.

KAfashionpillow Sack attackImage via Etsy.com

I know burlap is soooo 2010, but I keep seeing it and have really become taken with the earthy textile, so long as it has a touch of whimsy or cool design.

Burlap, no doubt, came into style recently because it’s a natural and sustainable product. As more companies go green, creative designers are using materials in really innovative ways.

I first started seeing burlap used as a way to repurpose and refresh. And cute, French-boudoir-inspired accesories, such as chairs and pillows began flying off Etsy.

KApillow 943x1024 Sack attackImage via Etsy.com

Then creative DIY’ers – not myself, of course — began making these amazing chairs. It’s all about the gorgeous print, usually something en francais.

But now, the trend is everywhere because burlap is so versatile and simply chic. You can find tablerunners galore, curtains, tablecloths, and plenty of beach-inspired accessories.

I’m on the hunt for some lamps for my living room, and I’m not only looking for a nice burlap shade, but an interesting base. Love this amber lamp!

And if I had the fabulous lifestyle I dream about, I’d go berserk for burlap covered walls. I love a wall texture done in the right way, like in this amazing room.

Fashion has even taken a burlap cue. I love the tongue-and-cheek, “you’d even look great in a burlap sack” reference. But even the fashion diva Rachel Zoe takes it a bit too far. Oh well, if anybody can try it, she can.

I take trends in tiny does when it comes to my personal style. Here’s the best way, in my opinion, to wear burlap — on your feet.

Happy Weekend!

SVrain Happy Weekend!

Hoping to see a little less of this over the weekend…lots to do out there!

Weather permitting, I plan to visit both the Blue Dome Arts Festival and Mayfest this weekend…and wish I could be wearing this while I cruise the streets for art and other goodies. (Image found on Pinterest)

In more realistic fashion goals, I do think I’ll run by Shoe Gypsy and pick up these lovelies

While we are talking outdoor activities, I spotted this and thought it would be super cute for a picnic or lake excursion.

Last week, the glitter wall was a big hit, and one reader suggested using it for a photobooth backdrop.  Love it!  While you’re thinking photobooths, check out these fantastic props from oh happy day! Wish I had these for my party last fall! Next time….

And for no reason other than general fantasticness…Jewel Box System, for lighting, room dividers or EVEN a photobooth backdrop.  A reeeeaaaallllly fancy photobooth backdrop.  One can dream.

Next week, look forward to some Prairie Hive Mag sneak peeks next week as we get the final versions of our photos rounded up…”Like” us on Facebook, Follow us on Twitter or Subscribe (all links in navigation bar above) for some extras!

Have a great weekend!
