Fun 4th of July Food

The 4th of July is such a fun summer holiday.  Lots of sun, friends, things exploding, and food.  The internet has been bursting with fun 4th of July foods.  Some are over the top and make you not want to consume them because of how long you know they took to make.  While others are so simple that I wish I had thought of them first.  Here are a few ideas that I have run across and think would be the perfect addition to any 4th of July party or picnic.

And for those of you that are feeling a little adventurous, how about an edible eagle?  Constructed of an oreo cookie, white chocolate dipped marshmallow rolled in coconut, and a cashew….so creative!

Love Collection

Many people have collections of items that they would like to show off in their home.  Whether the items are gathered as souvenirs on memorable trips or picked up along the way simply because they liked them, collections usually mean something to the collector.  And that personal touch is exactly what makes a home!

Similar individual items can make an interesting and bold visual impact when displayed together instead of spread throughout the house.  And I love when people have creative, fun and colorful ways to display their treasures!  Here are a few displays that I’ve come across, and I’d would love to recreate some of these in my own home.

Show your Stripes!

I found most of these stripes right here in Tulsa.  There is so much great red, white and blue to be found!  Each of these items would be so cute for your 4th of July celebrations, but are not too over the top to use the rest of the summer.   So, break out the stripes this weekend and keep them out all summer long!

Don’t be leery about lace

You don’t have to be Madonna circa 1984 to have fun with lace.

Nor do you have to be Kate Middleton — but her gorgeous wedding gown certainly helped inspire the ladylike lace trend in fashion.

And like all good trends, home design has taken a cue from the runway. Welcome to the age of lace.

I know, I know. It’s too much for many of you — I’m a girlie girl and sometimes I turn my nose up at anything overly lacy.

But if done right, the effect of lace gives a room some softness and a layer of personality.

And some lace designs are really edgy. I love these crochet-inspired nesting stools.

And even though I’m not usually a wallpaper person (don’t even get me started on how difficult it has been to remove all the 1950s-era wallpaper in my home), this lace-inspired wallpaper is gorgeous. It would be perfect for an over-the-top powder room.

I promise, though, that this officially ends my grandmother-inspired posts! After last week’s Milk Glass post, and now this, some of you might be wondering about me!

But I will find these new Toms that just came out — and promptly sold out. These natural crochet Toms scream summer — and I apparently missed the boat.

Happy Weekend!

SVpool Happy Weekend!

I’m wondering how many weekend posts I can start off complaining about the heat…but seriously – 100 degrees for a straight week in JUNE?  It’s just not right.  I don’t know about my fellow Oklahomies, but I have pretty much been living in flowy dresses, flip flops and ponytails for the last week…and since our friendly weatherman is saying it will continue, I think I may have to invest in a couple more options.  Shopping certainly sounds like a good (indoor) Saturday activity to me….

Before that, here’s this week’s roundup:

Maybe it’s the summer temps, but I have been completely obsessed with watermelon this week.  I’m pretty sure I’ve taken down almost 2 whole ones by myself.  Then I saw this post on Hip Hostess that adds booze – SOLD.  Plus, how great is the name?

Speaking of watermelon – I have a serious question for our readers.  What are your thoughts on food that’s presented like this?  To me, it just seems like alot of damn work for watermelon, kiwi and cheese.  I guess I  prefer a more “rustic” presentation (i.e., eating watermelon from the rind with a spoon and a salt shaker.  Don’t judge me.).  Discuss.

OK, important questions are over, now for the fun stuff. How summery and fun are these stack bracelets from JewelMint?

And…the most fantastic combo ever.  Did anyone else’s mom have this elephant basket at home?

Love this floor…wish I had a spot at home to make it happen.

If my doggies ever grow up and become trustworthy enough to sleep our of their kennel…I would want a few of these gorgeous dog beds for them to enjoy.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

DIY – Homemade Laundry Soap

For years I’ve been unable to use what most consider regular laundry detergent due to the fragrances, chemicals, etc..  I was so thankful when All came out with their unscented Free and Clear brand which I used for several years and then switched to Seventh Generation Unscented when it became available for purchase locally.   However, a couple of years ago it just seemed that we are paying too much for something that should be simple to make.  Inspired by Down to Earth and with a quick search on the internet, I was up to my ears in laundry detergent recipes.  After extensive reading, this is what I do.

RDDIYDetergentIngredients DIY Homemade Laundry Soap

Ingredients:

Mix 2 parts of grated soap with 1 part each of Borax and Washing Soda. Use 1 tablespoon per laundry load or 2 T for heavily soiled loads.

It looks like this.  This one is a little chunky because I used a very soft bar soap. I particularly like the white bar soaps and have been trying different local makers purchased at Dwelling Spaces and Natural Farms. For my next batch I’m going to try some of the soap by Hilltop Honey.  We love her lip balm, so smooth and soothing.

I usually mix 4 cups of grated soap with 2 cups each of Borax and Washing Soda.  This usually lasts us 6 months. Be mindful that there will be little to no suds, so stick to the one tablespoon. If you use fabric softener, distilled white vinegar makes a great alternative, just use as you would a store-bought softener.  If you really don’t want to grate the soap and have an extra food processor handy, you could cut the bar into smallish chunks and process it along with the washing soda and borax, just be sure to work in small batches.

Have fun and try different scents by adding essential oils.  One of my favorites for laundry was a coconut and lavender blend I stumbled upon sometime last year.  A sampler kit like the one above would be a great way to get started.

It’s raspberry picking time

AB%20 %20raspberries 2 Its raspberry picking time

The past few years my family has made time to go and hand pick raspberries.  Let me tell you, they are worth it!  They are nothing like what you find in the stores.

Surprisingly, there are many different places close to Tulsa where you can go and pick berries.  A great resource for finding a location near you is PickYourOwn.org.  All the farms are categorized by Oklahoma counties.  We have always gone to Cedar Bluff Raspberries, in Sapulpa, and had great success!

Last Friday was our raspberry picking day this year.  We headed out in the afternoon, which wasn’t the best decision since it was hovering around that 100 degree mark.  We were handed our wood buckets and we set out to filling them up with plump and juicy berries.  I must admit that the ”taste testing” made the heat a little more bearable.  I mean, you need to make sure that the berries are good, right?

This year my husband and I picked about five quarts.  We like to eat on them for a few days and then freeze a bunch to use throughout the year.  The best way to freeze fresh raspberries is to lay them in a single layer on a foil lined cookie sheet and place in the freezer until frozen.  Once they are frozen you can store them in any freezer safe container or bag.  They are great to pop a few into your morning bowl of granola or cereal.

One of my favorite desserts to make with any fresh fruit is fruit pizza.  It’s a quick and easy dessert that is sure to please anyone…and it’s beautiful with all the bright colors.

AB%20 %20raspberries 4 Its raspberry picking time

Here is my family’s recipe:

CRUST:

1 cup sugar, 1/2 cup margarine, 1 egg, 1 tsp. vanilla, 1/2 tsp. baking soda, 1/2 tsp. baking powder, 1/2 tsp. salt,  2 cups flour, 2 tbsp. milk

Cream margarine and sugar together.  Add egg and mix thoroughly.  Add dry ingredients, vanilla, and milk.  Pat dough into baking dish, pan, or pizza stone and bake at 350 degrees until lightly golden brown.  Remove from oven and let cool before adding your toppings.

FILLING:

1 (8 oz.) cream cheese, 1 cup powdered sugar, 1 container of cool whip

Allow cream cheese to come to room temperature.  Then mix cream cheese and powdered sugar together with a mixer.  Fold in cool whip.  Spread over cooled cookie crust.

TOPPINGS:

Before adding all the fruit, drain a can of crushed pineapple and spread over your filling.  Then top with any fruit of your choice.  I love to use fresh when possible.  Strawberries, raspberries, black berries, blue berries, kiwi, grapes, mandarine oranges, etc.  After the fruit I always sprinkle on a few chocolate chips and nuts.

My parents ended up with ten quarts this year, which means that mom made raspberry freezer jam!  I always thought jam would be difficult to make, but after watching her the other night, I quickly learned that it is super easy.  You simply follow the directions that come in your “Sure Jell” package.  The color is just beautiful!

Hopefully I have inspired you to take some time and pick some berries.  If you have any fabulous berry recipes, be sure to send them our way.  Happy Picking!

Summer Garden Party

This past weekend I attended a Garden Party hosted by our friend Briana, of Bifftastica, and her husband.  This yard-working duo kicked it into high gear to get their backyard whipped into shape in time for this shindig, and their sweaty evenings and weekends have definitely paid off.  They generously wanted to share the fruits (or vegetables) of their labor with dear friends!

I got to enjoy this fantastic yard and yummy treats with old friends and some new- including the lovely Christine Sharp-Crowe and Thom Crowe, founders of Tulsa’s Indie Emporium and make:Tulsa.  (So nice to meet you guys!!!  Hope to see you again soon!)

Despite the heat of Oklahoma’s hottest weekend thus far (with a high hovering around 98-degrees… not to mention the heat index), the outdoor venue was quite enjoyable.  The shade from the mature trees was a huge help, as was the nice steady breeze.  I guess there is something to be said for the wind that comes sweeping down the plain!

The large selection of homegrown vegetables makes it handy for them to toss a leafy salad, cook up some eggplant, or stir up some salsa.

I may be a bit biased, but for pops of color in a neutral room, yellow is becoming the go-to color around here.  From large swaths of sunshiny brights to punchy accessories, it’s everywhere these days!

Serving Suggestions — Milk glass

It took me all of six seconds to fall in love with my latest obsession — milk glass. Thanks to another new obsession — Pinterest – I’ve found dozens of ways to make this beautiful glass look updated and fresh. The strawberries help.

KA milkglassmain1 Serving Suggestions Milk glass

A quick Google search, and I learned that this opaque glass was first created in 16th Century Venice (thank you Wikipedia). But  its sweet simplicity can be easily translated for the 21st Century home.

Mixing the old and new is what makes your home look lived in, rather than looking like a bland catalog entry.

For example, this milk glass makes the perfect vase for a summer table setting.

And while I adore white accessories, color is even an option.

For the person who wants something a bit more funky, here’s a way to make milk glass more modern. It’s all about how you personalize it.
