I’m nowhere near as talented a crafter or DIY person as my fellow Prairie Hive-ers. Can you believe the cool silk scarves from Issue Two?!? (Don’t forget to enter our silk scarf giveaway! You still have until Wednesday to comment on the blog and enter to win.)

The versatile use of colorful scarves from Issue Two’s pool party inspired me to use fabric to wake up my own home decor. Rather than use photographs, I decided to add some color to my bedroom with patterned fabric swatches.

First, I bought three large, white photo frames from Target (mine were on sale for $14 each).  Then I bought some fabric swatches from Hobby Lobby for $10, making the grand total about $52. Not bad for the prominent art in the room!

After choosing your fabric, starch and iron out all the creases. The starch will make it nice and sturdy.

Then, align the fabric inside the frame, just as you would a favorite photo. It can get a little tricky to keep the pattern straight, so you could adhere the fabric to cardboard first. Just make sure glue or any other adhesives don’t leave puckers in the fabric. I’m lazy, so I used Scotch tape.

And make sure to let your kitty help by sitting on the sack and watching!

Once finished, your only problem will be where to hang them. I plan to hang them above my bed in a neat row as soon as I finish a few other adjustments. I promise to share when the room is complete!

Love this idea! Especially to spruce up a drab office. Something we did at our house before committing to decor was stretch colorful fabric over a canvas to create a larger piece of ‘art’. Certainly helped for that year (cough, okay, two, cough) where I was too nervous to paint or nail anything to the wall. HA!

Thanks for sharing this simple and fun decorating idea. I’m sure my kitty will be more than happy to help, too.

Those look great Kim! I love the orange and blue hexagons, but I’ve always had a soft spot for contrasting color combinations.

I think Harriet might like the sack more than the art? :)

Um… I’m kinda TOTALLY LOVING this site, this pub and this blog! I mean, even the hex-tile border here on the web site here is right up my prairie alley. Keep up the great work.
