DIY – Saori Weaving

When I craft or work on an art piece it is often time spent reflecting. I let go of the world around and focus on the motion, decisions and get lost in the process.  I believe that those who have trouble focusing or meditating should create and through creation will find a release that perhaps they’ve been unable to reach.

Please join us tomorrow at the Indie Emporium and have a small quick introductory craft to Saori style weaving.  First inspired by the portable version, I quickly became curious and found so many more inspiring woven pieces; I know what I’ll be picking up this winter!

This was the original inspiration and the following images are some that I could not resist.  Come visit Saturday from 12 – 5 pm at the Indie Emporium Craft Show held at Living Arts studio in downtown and we’ll compare notes.

T.V. to Reality – Modern Family, The Dunfy House

So it’s that time again – when T.V. gets good.  So many new shows to get hooked on.  So many existing shows that I have followed for years, but now don’t really care about anymore, yet I feel almost guilty for not watching.

Anyways, one of my favorites is ABC’s Modern Family.  It makes me laugh every time!  I love all the different family dynamics and how they all interact together.

I also love all their different homes.  So, for this T.V. to Reality, I am going to show you how to get the comfortable Dunfy family room look.

This is a great family room because it is open to the kitchen area as well.  Perfect for interacting while cooking dinner and doing homework.

As far as their style goes, it’s a mix match.  It looks like a home that has been collected over time….my favorite kind!  They have a nice balance of neutral pieces (couch and rug) with pops of color (throws and tray).  Combining different patterns (stripes and medallions) add to the laid back, comfortable feel.

Loving Outdoor Living

Lisa’s Fall Porch post from yesterday definitely has me in the mood for Fall and excited to spruce up my front porch.  But I also can’t stop thinking about how I would love to cozy up my backyard.  On crisp Fall evenings, I love to brew up a warm cup of Earl Grey Tea or a Chai Tea Latte, grab a blanket and snuggle up with a book.  Imagine how much more wonderful that book and Chai would be if I could relax in my backyard with a few of these lovely items I covet:

It’s time to buy the pumpkins!  But what am I going to do with them this year?  I’m ready to change it up and I’ve found some beautiful sources of inspiration.  My focus right now is the front porch.  I would love to put out pumpkins, fall flowers and maybe a new wreath on the door, but I’m hoping to make it more fall and less Halloween so it lasts through Thanksgiving.

Here are some of my favorite examples of beautiful outdoor fall decor.  I can’t wait to get going!

I love this wreath!  I love its color and its simplicity.  It will be beautiful on the door the entire season.

This wreath is beautiful, too!  So unique and interesting!

I love the combination of colors  in this arrangement.  It will give me some much needed guidance when I head out to pick out flowers and pumpkins.

If I start feeling a little more crafty, I may try to attempt something like this.  I love carved pumpkins and these are fun without being too Halloween-y.

Serving Suggestions: A better barbecue

The term “barbecue” is a topic of much debate around these parts — in Oklahoma, having a barbecue is much different from eating barbecue. Serving slow, smoked meat is the only acceptable meaning of “barbecue” here, grilling hot dogs and burgers is not the same thing.

I know all of this because I’m, without a doubt, a “barbecue wife.” My husband has a smoker in the back yard, and he’s not afraid to use it. I’m just glad he hasn’t purchased a giant smoker that you hitch up to a truck…yet. I shudder at the thought of where we’d put that thing.

Nevertheless, we enjoy having friends over to watch football and eat some delicious ribs — I have to brag now, he really knows what he’s doing. And we had so much fun this weekend at one of our favorite events, The Art of Barbecue festival, which benefits the Arts and Humanities Council of Tulsa.

KAbbq1 Serving Suggestions: A better barbecueThese were the ribs at the check-in table, if that tells you how much meat there was!

Competition barbecue teams from all over the country head to Tulsa to smoke meat all night, so we can enjoy their efforts. This year it was held in downtown Tulsa, and a huge crowd showed up to sample.

KAbbq2 Serving Suggestions: A better barbecueThe crowd was great this year, one long line of barbecue tents.

That said, it got me to thinking: I need to step up my presentation this year. I’m not one for an elaborate barbecue party — no need for handmade labels here. The food gets gobbled up pretty quickly, and I’m not delusional. I know that when the game is on and meat is served, presentation means very little to boys. Still, I found some more attractive ways to serve side dishes. I enjoy making baked beans and serving all the necessary sides.

Just because meat is not pretty, doesn’t mean the spread can’t have some attractive touches.

Have a great fall barbecue!

Happy Weekend!

SVpumpkintruck Happy Weekend!

Image from {whimsicalities} via Pinterest

I figured I’d stick with the fall transition theme that we’ve been focused on all week on the blog…it’s definitely been a flurry of pumpkins, hot drinks and sweaters around here, no?  I guess we can’t help it as we work on finishing up our October Issue – due out next week – it’s chock full of autumnal country goodness, and we can’t wait to share it with you!  We are also prepping for our day at Indie Emporium next weekend…come visit us as we participate in the first ever Iron Craft competition, host the Make and Take, and do a quick demo with some sneak peeks of Issue Three!  If you’re a subscriber, you’ll get some bonus pics next week as well…or check us out on Facebook or Twitter (links to the right!).

While I have been working like a busy bee, I did find a few fun things around the web this week:

Because I’m a sucker for anything hexagon

And a little bit of a reading + food geek.

I found these while browsing baby mobiles, but think they would look great in a grown-up room!

If you missed the Missoni craze at Target, Anthropologie is giving you another chance to catch the fever…

Are you thinking about Christmas yet?  Not me – I can only handle one season at a time.  But when I got this West Elm preview yesterday, some of the goodies were so cute, I couldn’t help but get in the spirit!

But not for too long.  Get out and enjoy your weekend!

Welcome Fall!

Well you can really tell how excited us Prairie Hive girls are about Fall! I think we’ve covered lots of Autumn inspiration since the weather broke.  I know it’s been a few weeks since days on end of 100+ degree weather, but we really thought it may never cool down and then this year ended up being one of the earliest Autumns we’ve had in years.

I was going to post about Fall decor inspiration, clothing changes and the first day of Fall.  Instead, I think I’ll leave you with this Spiced Chai Tea Mix I’ve been using.  You can be sure to find me celebrating with a nice steaming mug of this on my patio the first chance I get in the season.

I should really try her lighter (and healthier) version!

Spiced Chai Tea Mix

  • 1 cup Nonfat Dry Milk Powder
  • 1 cup Powdered Non-Dairy Creamer
  • 1 cup French Vanilla Powdered Non-Dairy Creamer
  • 2 1/2 cups White Granulated Sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups Unsweetened Instant Tea
  • 2 tsp Ground Ginger
  • 2 tsp Ground Cinnamon
  • 1 tsp Ground Cloves
  • 1 tsp Ground Cardamom
  • 1 tsp Nutmeg
  • 1 tsp Allspice
  • 1/4 tsp White Pepper

Mix all ingredients in large bowl.  Process in food processor in batches, then store in airtight container. Use two heaping spoonfuls per mug of hot water.

A few disclaimers. I would certainly double or triple this recipe.  Once you go to all the trouble of grinding everything, you won’t want to get the food processor out again when it runs out unexpectedly quickly. Also, your friends really appreciate jars of this as sweet gifts, so much better when someone else makes it! Lastly, this is certainly not (nutritionally) good for you, so enjoy sparingly and consider it a guilty pleasure. Perfect for pairing with a warm bath on a cool Autumn evening!

Simple Fall Decorations

For the past couple of weeks I have been trying to make the house feel a little more like fall.  The key work is “trying”.  Really that just means that I have dried black beans, dried wheat stalks, and pumpkins sitting on my kitchen table, trying to figure out what to do with them.  I’m telling you, it’s so much easier for me to help other people with their homes than it is for me to work on my own home!

One area that I am definitely on top of is the candle area.  I love fall candles.  They are my favorite.  Right now my favorites are from Bath and Body Works.  I may have been in there multiple times in the past couple of weeks just smelling all the new fall fragrances!  Here are my selections for making your home smell like fall….

The Slatkin & Co. candles are amazing.  They infuse your entire room with their fragrance, unlike some candles that you have to be standing directly above to smell.  Leaves, Autumn Apple, and Fireside, are three of my favorites for the season.  Oh, and try burning two at once…mixing and matching fragrances!  Leaves and Autumn Apple are great together.
So, back to my fall decorations.  Here are some fall looks that I am loving this year…

I found these gold and silver painted pumpkins at Michael’s.  I bought a couple and am going to try and use them on my mantle.

And wouldn’t these pumpkins be a great addition to your front porch?  It would be adorable with white ones as well!

I need something tall to go on my mantle along with the pumpkins, so I was thinking about a bundle of dried wheat stalks.  I love the warm yellow color.  Unfortunately  I haven’t found any pre-made bundles around town, so I am going to attempt making some on my own.  Mind you…I am not the super crafty type….that’s Dawn and Roxanne!  We shall see how that goes.

For the summer months I filled some recycled glass jars (spaghetti sauce jars, olive jars, and salsa jars that I took the labels off of) with sand and white votive candles for the mantle.  I am going to replace the sand with black beans and see how that looks.

Hopefully this weekend I will be able to get some of these little projects completed (while working on getting our Issue 3 magazine laid out, of course).

I’ll leave you with this fabulous living room I stumbled upon…..

I love all the natural wood.  Simple and beautiful.  The use of fall colors combined with some natural branches and a burning fire give the room a great cozy fall atmosphere.  I could definitely cuddle up there with a cup of hot cider.

The Power of: Symmetry

When laying out or accessorizing a space, a designer always keeps the elements and principles of design in mind.  These are the basis, or building blocks, of design.  They help achieve a space that is visually appealing and just plain “feels right.”  Most successful spaces incorporate a many different elements and/or principles.

Over the next few weeks I will share and break down a few of these elements and principles with you in hopes that it will help inspire you in arranging your own home!

First up: the principle of Balance (more specifically – Symmetry).

Achieving balance is basically making sure that one side of a room doesn’t feel ‘heavier’ than the other, that not all your furniture or accessories are placed on one side of the room leaving the other side empty.  You want your room to be visually balanced.

Symmetry is a more specific version of balance.  If you were to draw a line down the middle of a room, each side would mirror the other, look the same.  Dictionary.com describes it like this:  the correspondence in size, form, and arrangement of parts on opposite sides of a plane, line, or point; regularity of form or arrangement in terms of like, reciprocal, or corresponding parts.

When used properly, symmetry can make for a dynamic space or a bold statement.  It creates consistency and is pleasing to your eye.  But be careful in using it as it also has the possibility to come across as rigid and uninviting.  It’s all about what you are going for in your own space.

Check out some of these images of symmetrical spaces and let me know your thoughts on this principle!

Soccer Mom Style – Transition Time!

Although the first day of fall isn’t officially for a few days, the weather here in Tulsa has definitely taken a turn.  We’ve had some days just cool enough to remind us that colder weather will be coming.  So, all of us anxious soccer moms are ready to break out the fall attire!  But what to wear when it seems like fall, but the temperatures still get warm?  Here are some of the things I’m ready to add to my early fall wardrobe.  I can mix each of these with some summer pieces while it’s still warm and then layer them up when it’s colder.   And each of these pieces is very soccer mom friendly - neutral and versatile!
