I Love Candy: Happy Halloween!

I love Halloween! It’s routinely my favorite holiday, and I love everything associated with a holiday revolving around candy. That said, my favorite visual symbol of Halloween is not a witch’s hat, but candy corn.

I’m not a fan of eating it — except I recently discovered gummy candy corn, and it’s delicious! — but the tri-color candy is a great way to decorate.

Here are some fun ideas I found:

How funny is this? These ginormous candy corn were on sale on Craig’s List for $3,800!

And finally, I don’t love to eat candy corn, but I love the smell. I know, very weird. I love this shampoo/body wash from Philosophy. Have a happy Halloween!!!

Happy (Halloween) Weekend!

SVhalloween3 Happy (Halloween) Weekend!

Happy pre-Halloween weekend!  Does everyone have their costumes, decorations and candy ready?  Nope?  Me either.  After a much needed vacation this week, I’ll be scrambling this weekend to get ready for Monday.  Since time is limited and my decorations won’t be up for long, my plan is to concentrate all my efforts on one area…the front door.   I’m thinking something like this…love the branch over the door!  Since I’m in the mood…here are some of my favorite Halloween finds from around the web this week:

If I had time…love this idea for a spooky, but different wreath.

Is anyone else obsessed with any food containing pumpkin?  Here are a few healthy options for pumpkin ingredients (the Kashi is delicious!).

While a little out of my price range, how gorgeous are these creepy-but-fantastic jewelry pieces?

I’m loving black-and-white this Halloween…how about this Masquerade party from Camille Styles for coco+kelley?

Need to occupy the kids this weekend?  Some great looking Halloween themed crafts (love the spider sacks)!

Enjoy any weekend festivities and have fun on Monday!

Celebrate – Halloween Serving Table

I think a Halloween party is much too festive for a sit-down dinner, so I’ve planned my table scape around a grab and go serving bar.  When I saw this Branch Pedestal tiered serving platter I knew I wanted to use it for my Celebrate – Halloween inspiration!

I think I would let it shine by surrounding it supporting, but useful pieces.  A base of cheesecloth fabric gives a nod to traditionally creepy Halloween decor and topping it with mixed black accessories keeps the focus on the tiered stand.

I love these touch of black lace coasters from local Weather and Noise and would like a nice pile on the table. I would include these lacey pierced candle holders as well to create a layered nod to the lace effect.  Now all that’s missing are the goodies!

Grandma’s Attic

Among all of the many items that my Grandma has collected over the years, Shawnee’s Corn King Dishes rank the highest.  In 1956 she worked 5 1/2 days a week and made $25.  Out of that $25 she would set aside enough money to buy one piece of the corn dishes at the Poteau 5 & 10.

Any time she goes to an antique store she searches for the corn, just to see how much it is going for now.  Throughout the past 55 years she has collected at least one of every single piece…..let’s be real…probably multiples!

And that’s only a sampling!  It’s so great getting to see something that has been collected over time.  It kind of makes me wonder what I have that might still be around in 55 years…….unfortunately I don’t think my shoe collection will last that long!

If you do have some great collections, remember to check out Dawn’s post about collections from June.

Dawn’s Deals – Missouri Edition

This past weekend I went to visit one of my best friends, Megan.  (Do you remember when I posted here about her amazing furniture painting skills?  Keep an eye out!  She is working on several new projects that will be unveiled in the near future!)  We were long overdue for a catch-up session, so I traveled about 6 hours northeast to her quaint town in Missouri for an extended weekend with her and her adorable family.  We had a blast chatting at record-breaking speeds, cheering on our team at the Oklahoma State vs. Mizzou football game, and scouring her favorite antique stores for some treasures!  Check out my scores!

This awesome Mid Century Modern footstool is in need of some laminate patching, but for $7.50, it was a deal I couldn’t pass up!

I’m always searching for pretty and loved quilts.  In this case, the quilt is pretty loved.  And I love it!  Tucked away in a booth at the main street (haunted) antique mall with a 40% off sale sign posted, it called my name.  I walked away with the cozy quilt at $11.40.  And the round table may not seem like much now, but soon it will be a gleaming white beauty in my dining room!  Megan, who is a furniture hunter extraordinaire, found it for me a couple of weeks prior at a garage sale for $5.00!  (It even came with two chairs, but they were falling apart and were better suited for her family’s backyard fire pit).

I’ve been wanting to change it up in the dining room and have been looking at round tables.  Something like table below.  And Megan snagged a similar one for me that will work perfectly!

And this vintage globe glows when plugged in!  Well, at least it has the ability to and the shopkeeper said that with a little electrical wire work, it definitely will.  I will soon be taking this puppy to Best Hardware here in Tulsa for  what is hopefully a quick repair.  (Best Hardware can fix anything!)  For $7.00 plus the cost of the repair, this gorgeous globe will light up my entryway!

And finally, this $3.00 leaf candy dish is a perfect addition for my fall decor!

I’m hoping to hit up a few more sales this coming weekend.  I’ll let you know if I find anything!  Have you found any good deals lately?  What are they?

Crafty Carvings!

Have you carved those pumpkins yet?  When our children marched out of their rooms today dressed like surgeons, announcing they were ready to “operate” on the pumpkins, we decided it was time to go for it!

They already had a plan for each of their pumpkins, but had they needed inspiration I would have loved to show them some of these.  So many cute ideas – some great for the kids – and some great if there’s not one kid in the house!  Happy carving!

I love these pumpkins – they’re carved with a drill!  There’s a great tutorial on the website.

And ta da…

 Crafty Carvings!

Here are our pumpkins.  If the center pumpkin design looks familiar, you may have a 10 year old with the Encyclopedia of Immaturity.  The insides of the pumpkin are currently in the fridge- they will be the pumpkin’s vomit on Halloween.  Lovely.

One more thing.  Since our daughter has been BEGGING to roast pumpkin seeds, I thought I would include a recipe.  Yummy!

Spiced Pumpkin Seeds from allrecipes.com

1 1/2 tablespoons margarine, melted; 1/2 teaspoon salt; 1/8 teaspoon garlic salt; 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce; 2 cups raw whole pumpkin seeds

1.  Preheat oven to 275 degrees F  2.  Combine the margarine, salt, garlic salt, Worcestershire sauce and pumpkin seeds.  Mix thoroughly and place in shallow baking dish.  3.  Bake for 1 hour, stirring occasionally.

Enjoy!

Happy Halloween!

Unexpected Inspiration: Unique photo displays

I’m constantly in awe of a home with a creative photo display. I’ll admit that my home’s displays are pretty uninspired — I’ve always hung my photos in the polite, conservative way that I think many people hang them — in a small configuration on a giant wall with way too much dead space.

That’s why I’m looking for new ways to display my favorite memories, like this photo booth display. It’s actually from a movie set — “The Joneses,” starring Demi Moore and David Duchovny. What a great, alternative way to hang a family portrait. It shows the family in action, rather than in a static position.

KAhorizphotos2 Unexpected Inspiration: Unique photo displaysImage via Apartment Therapy from Pinterest

The above display shows yet another option for hanging group photos — look closely to see that many of them are family heirloom photos, probably of grandparents’ class photos or their old fraternity days. The horizontal grouping gives it a modern feel, proving that old can indeed feel new.

This is another fun way to show vintage photos — adding them to a mason jar makes a nice touch, especially for a wedding party!

And these clothesline photos are a fun way to display magazine clippings for a future project, day-to-day inspiration or fun photos from a party. In the digital age of photography, it’s nice to hang hard copies from time to time.

And for the special occasion, there’s no better reason than to order a special photo, like this custom-made print on a wood block. Unforgettable. That’s how our photos should feel.

Happy Weekend!

It’s vacation time (well almost)! As you read this, I am probably frantically getting our household ready to leave for a MUCH needed vacation next week! For us, that involves distributing and organizing care for 3 dogs, 3 cats and our house in general….no small feat.  After an extremely hectic few weeks (or is that few MONTHS?), I am definitely ready for some R&R and some quality time with my husband.  We are headed to Chicago for a few days, a perfect place for a culmination of both of our passions – design/art/architecture (me) and food (him).  And of course…relaxing.

Of course the other ladies will be blogging all week, so I will be reading and enjoying along with you (instead of my usual spot in the “admin” position)! Before I sign off for the week, here are a few finds from this one:

I SOOO wish our hive had time to participate in the I’m A Giant! Challenge over on Emily Henderson’s blog.  Not only do we love her, but how fun are these????

Check out this adorable “Something Wicked…” printable from a local blogger/designer.  Perfect for Halloween!

Speaking of local, how have I not seen this great tee from Okie company Tree and Leaf?  Have I been under a rock?  Does anyone know if these are sold in Tulsa, or are they OKC only?  Either way, I’m on it.

Are you ready for Halloween?  I’m going to do some last minute decorating next week, but LOVE this monochromatic tablescape so much I kind of want to have a party now!

And if you’re thinking ahead to the next holiday (and are kind of a design geek)…Pantone Christmas ornaments.  Seriously.

Have a great autumn weekend!

Office Inspiration

As some of you know, we are making room for one more in our home…which means that in addition to creating a nursery space (more on that LATER), we are moving my home office into a small guest room.  While for some people working from home means time on the sofa with a laptop, I am definitely more productive when I have a designated space where I can focus.  I’m a firm believer that people do better, more creative work when in pleasant, inspiring surroundings – so although my office space is being downsized, it’s just as important to me to organize and decorate it with as much effort as I am putting into the baby room!  For the last few months, I’ve been pulling images, thinking about what I’d like to do with the new space…

I am in love with the image above…the neutral, clean furniture mixed with some personal, textured elements and bursts of color.  I can’t decide if I’m ready to take the plunge with the dramatic dark wall though.

This is a little more subtle…plus, it’s a chalkboard, so it’s functional as well.  The neutrals with wood are nice and clean (although I can guarantee my space would never be this clutter free!).  What I’m eyeing the most here is the storage…perfect for pens, pencils, scissors, etc. – and take up no drawer or shelf space!

Can you see where I’m going yet?  The dark wall and moody tree branch are gorgeous, but I think I need a little more pep.  However, I LOVE this inspiration line with clothespins…perfect for my ever changing projects, tidbits of info I find and personal photos.

The next couple of images are nice and bright…once more mixing woods, whites and neutrals, adding in lots of texture and natural materials.  This feels organized, but not too perfect – way closer to reality for me! I would love a window like this to gaze out while I work…

This space is about as clean as you come, but the added bright patterns and colors give it some personality.  I will definitely be adding some brights into my space, thanks to a happy accident where a random piece of art I’ve been trying to place forever works perfectly with a pillow I bought in the Missoni Target frenzy.

This is probably a little closer to what I’ll end up with…clean, neutrals with color and a little personality from the objects around the workspace.  It feels workable and liveable but pulled together, with plenty of organized storage.

I’ll be sure to share pictures when I get my space finished in a few weeks, I’ve got a few more decisions to make and some IKEA shelving to assemble in the meantime!

Yummy Pumpkin Recipes

This time of year is perfect for all sorts of pumpkin recipes.  Pumpkin can be used many different ways.  Usually here in this part of the country, we associate it with sweets.  But when I was in Australia, I learned that they use it in savory dishes as well.  The first surprise was in lasagna.  Yep, the lasagna was made with pumpkin.  Sounds weird, but I assure you, it was good!  The second meal where pumpkin showed up was with a roast…you know Sunday roasts with carrots, onions, celery, and pumpkin!  Again, not expected, but yummy.

My family loves to cook, so I thought I would share with you some of our favorite pumpkin recipes.

PUMPKIN SPICE BREAD PUDDING

This is a recipe that my mom and I worked on.  We took about different three recipes and combined aspects from each to come up with the final product.  It’s super yummy, especially with the bourbon sauce!  You can find this recipe in our Prairie Hive Issue Three mag.

PUMPKIN BARS (Photo is from my friends wedding dessert bar a couple of years ago.  For easy serving cut the bars into small squares and serve in cup cake liners.)

Mix eggs, sugar, oil, and pumpkin.  Then add dry ingredients.  Mix well.  Bake on a 1″ deep cookie sheet at 325 degrees for 25 minutes.

PUMPKIN BAR FROSTING

3 oz. cream cheese, 1/2 stick butter, 1 tsp. vanilla, 2 cups powdered sugar

Cream butter and cream cheese together.  Add powdered sugar and vanilla.  Frost pumpkin bars once they have cooled.

PUMPKIN PIE SHAKE

AB%20 %20pumpkin%20shake Yummy Pumpkin Recipesimage via Cooking Light

I stumbled upon this Cooking Light Pumpkin Pie Shake recipe a few years ago.  It is a fall staple in our house.  My husband loves sweets and this is a quick and easy one to whip up.  And it’s relatively healthy!

PUMPKIN MUFFIN

1 spice cake mix, 1 can pumpkin, 3/4 cup water, 1 tsp. baking soda

Mix together and pour into muffin tin.  Bake at 350 degrees until a toothpick comes out clean, when inserted into muffin.

PUMPKIN ROLL

One of my favorites is the Pumpkin Roll.  There are many variations out there, but Libby’s Pumpkin Roll does the trick!

Those are a few of my favorites.  If you have any great recipes that include pumpkin, please share!
