Take a Leap!

Happy Leap Year Day!!  (…or however you say that)  What a great day this will be!  An extra whole 24 hours added to your year.  For free!  This only happens every four years, so I say we should celebrate!  Make the most of it.  Take a “leap” and do something you’ve been afraid to do or have been putting off for one reason or another.  Today is the day!

And who doesn’t need another reason to have a celebration or add a little something special to your day.  Here are a few ideas I found to help you brighten up this last day of February:

This frog cookie is adorable and not complicated to put together.

There is a Leap Year Cocktail – who knew??  Apparently it dates back the Leap Year celebration of 1928.  Check out this website for the recipe and the origin of the drink.

If you feel like going all out on the cheesiness-factor, enjoy a relaxing evening with this flick while sipping the Leap Year Cocktail.  It’s about the old fold tradition that a woman can ask a man to marry her only on a Leap Year.

This is a little what my brain always feels like when we start getting down to the wire on an issue of Prairie Hive Mag! Just over a week out, we are doing lots of editing, layouts and fine tuning on what is definitely one of my favorite issues ever! Look for some sneak peeks next week on our Facebook and Pinterest pages, or sign up for our email list to get it delivered straight to your Inbox!

Here are a few of my picks from online this week:

I’ve always been a fan of Thonet Bentwood Chairs, so I loved this roundup on Apartment Therapy.

DIY of the Week: Gold Dipped Bangles. So cute and easy – a great way to update some random items floating around the jewelry box!

Gorgeous Planters made from recycled wine bottles.

Love this company that has dinnerware designed by tattoo artists

And one last bit of Oscar fun!

Have a great weekend and enjoy the show Sunday night!

Bulk Goods Storage in My Kitchen

I was excited enough about the bulk goods buying options at my local Reasor’s that I just had to share with you. I thought it only fair now to show you how this kind of shopping can transform the look of your pantry or kitchen. We all love a pretty, organized pantry!

So, here’s a shot of all the random containers that house my dry goods. These are all items you can buy in the bulk section and includes everything from baking staples and snacks to lentils, beans, and grains such as amaranth and quinoa. Side note: We’ve been adding amaranth and quinoa to our rice, just add it to the rice in the rice cooker and it will add protein and great texture; not sure I’ll be eating rice by itself again!

This only made me realize that I have so much stuff stashed in my pantry cabinet that should be out on the counter with these. I’m not sure if we use these items most often because they are out, or if they’re out because we use them most. I think it’s a little of both but I have a feeling that if I pull some other things out of the depth of my pantry, we’d move through them much more quickly.

How about these sweet blue jars that I snapped a pic of last time I was at Alayna’s.  I forgot to ask her where she got them!

Here’s a few inspiring images to get you started. And I can tell you that just going through the process of showing you my mismatched containers certainly makes me want to finish a couple of kitchen projects that would really make my dry goods accessible and much more pleasing to the eye. How is it that before I know it, 2 years have gone by and those little finishing projects are still on the list?

You can never go wrong with canning jars, whether you pick up a case from your local grocery, or collect those beautiful blue Ball jars, they will stand up to use and always look nice. My favorite new jars are Weck.

It’s Oscar Time!

KAoscarballot Its Oscar Time! Image via Howaboutorange

If you’re like me, the Oscars are the most wonderful time of the year! Are you ready for the Academy Awards on Sunday?

I’ve been a fan of the awards show as long as I can remember, and I’m a big movie geek, so needless to say I’ve hosted an Oscar party or two.

It starts with a good ballot, like this one above. You can download it online and print out for your guests — serves a good purpose for those who’ve forgotten a category or two, like sound editing.

Next, you  must serve champagne or sparkling wine, even in little cans like these.  This is my favorite brand named for one of my favorite Oscar winners, Sofia Coppola.

KApartypopcorn Its Oscar Time! Image via Lushlee

Whether you go casual and have popcorn and mini cans of champagne, or you have a catered dinner, the decor can be whimsical and girlie, or old Hollywood.

Black-and-white is a classic color scheme for an Oscar party. Throw in an accent of gold or silver, and you’ve got instant old Hollywood glam. Who needs the Vanity Fair party?

KAblackwhiteparty Its Oscar Time! Image via Rue from Pinterest

The dress code can be whatever you want it to be — sweats and yoga pants work just fine — or you can have your guests turn up in cocktail attire.

KAlittleblackdress Its Oscar Time! Image via bhldn from Pinterest

And for those who want a classic drink for a classic Oscars party –serve a gin martini. Martha Stewart has a modern twist on the cocktail.

KAoliverosemarymartini Its Oscar Time! Image via MarthaStewart

Serve this with appetizers and goodies, and your guests will feel like they’re stars.

Olive-Rosemary Martini

  • 2 ounces gin
  • 2 teaspoons dry vermouth
  • 1 rosemary sprig
  • Pitted olives

1. Shake 2 ounces gin and 2 teaspoons dry vermouth with crushed ice; strain into a stemmed glass. Strip leaves from bottom 2 inches of a rosemary sprig, skewer through pitted olives, and add to the drink.

Happy Oscars!

Peppy Paint Chip Projects

Paint samples are great to use as a craft material.  They’re colorful (obviously), which is right up my alley.  And they’re free!  Also, right up my alley.  Grab a few next time you’re at your local home improvement store and see what you can come up with.  (If you plan on tackling a big project, I’d recommend asking the store before helping yourself icon wink Peppy Paint Chip Projects  Here are a few great ideas for inspiration!

Mardi Gras!

So what will you be doing today?  Your last day of indulgence before the Lenten season begins?  My celebration will likely be low-key, but here are some Mardi Gras related projects or events I might include in my day to keep in the festive spirit.

LWbeignets Mardi Gras!

Cafe du Monde

Ever since we visited Cafe du Monde last summer, my daughter has been BEGGING me to make beignets.  I might wake up at the crack of dawn to make them – according to Paula Deen, they take about 2 1/2 hours.   You can find her recipe at foodnetwork.com.  Or maybe I’ll pick some up at Hebert’s or the Wild Fork here in Tulsa- I’ve heard they’re wonderful!

LWmask3 Mardi Gras!

After school, I think it might be fun for the kids to make their own Mardi Gras masks.  There’s a pattern for the above mask at Twig and Toadstool.  It’s so fun and colorful- my daughter would love this one and have so much fun wearing it to celebrate.  Another great mask idea below is from Handprint and Footprint Art.

LWhurricane2 Mardi Gras!

For kicks, it may be fun to have just one New Orleans inspired cocktail sometime after the crafts and baking are done.  The  following recipe for this yummy Hurricane is a from My Life as a Mrs.

Hurricane

Yield: 1 cocktail

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Total Time: 5 minutes

Ingredients:

2 oz grenadine
1 ½ oz light (silver) rum
1 ½ oz dark (gold) rum
1 ½ oz orange juice
1 ½ oz pineapple juice
½ oz triple sec
½ oz lime juice

Directions:

Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker or glass with ice and shake or stir well. In a tall glass, fill with crushed ice and pour drink over ice. Garnish with an orange and a maraschino cherry.

And…if you make it past the Hurricanes and are ready to get out and join the party, Tulsa’s Blue Dome District’s Merchant Association is hosting its very own 3rd Annual Mardi Gras parade downtown.  It starts right by McNellie’s at 7 p.m.  Don’t miss it!  And Laissez les Bons Temps Rouler!

Happy Weekend!

snow Happy Weekend!

Does anyone else feel a little like they’ve been gypped out of winter?  While it’s been nice to be able to take walks outside in the afternoons — my winter coat, gloves, scarves and hats are just looking a little under-appreciated in the hall closet!  I’m still hoping for an early March snow (preferably the week I have to go back to work full time so I can get an extra few days with my sweet baby!)…

Do you miss winter this year?

Walks or not, I’ve found some time for browsing this week, here are a few of my favorites:

Great new site: Low Commitment Projects: Making stuff happen with little time or energy.  Love it, this is my kind of DIY!

I’m so into this rug! If only I didn’t have a small zoo and a baby at home and could have nice things…

But since I do…I’m so glad I came across these mats over on Creature Comforts!

Seriously considering heading downtown to our friend Shane’s shop, HOOD, for these cuties.

How cool are these foldable toys for kids or grown-ups?  Like super-hip origami!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Surprise, New Options at Reasor’s!

Okay, this is a very local-centric post so I apologize in advance for all of you not living in Tulsa. But look what I found on the weekly grocery shopping trip to the locally owned chain, Reasor’s.

RD021712a Surprise, New Options at Reasors!

Bulk goods! And plenty of organic choices too. Everything from chocolate covered nuts and many flavored granolas, to sea salt and dried fruits like cherries and mango. I know this might seem trivial, but ever since Wild Oats left, our grocery shopping experience has been lacking, for lack of a better word. Many of our go-to organic, cost effective choices have been unavailable since the switch and the replacement store seems about 400 times more congested.

So thank you Jeff Reasor for implementing this in our locally owned grocery. Since we try to support local makers, farmers and other businesses, this makes it especially easy. Pardon my phone pics, but here’s a couple more shots. Lots of  choices of organic rice, whole wheat flour, quinoa, sea salt, and real sugar are just some of many options.

I’m not sure if this last one is new, but we’ve been missing this root beer as well. Now if they could only carry Wallaby yogurt…

RD021712e Surprise, New Options at Reasors!

Stick around and next week I’ll show you how this shopping style helps with great design in your kitchen. I love everything from my living room to my pantry and even under the sink to be visually appealing and sometimes even stylish!
