DIY Pinwheels

Back in January my sister and I were hitting up the after Christmas sales at the mall.  As we were walking along, J. Crew’s window display stopped us both in our tracks……

Being that I am an interior designer and she manages retail and works with visuals all the time, this kind of stuff is right up our alley!

They were these super cool and colorful pinwheel things.  They had all different sizes and they were suspended from the ceiling.  We immediately went in for a closer view and decided that we could totally replicate these ourselves.

Well, my sister has made it farther than I have (surprise, surprise!).  I have started the folding process, but she actually has some completed and hanging above her bed.  So, here is what you need…..

Old magazines, glue gun, stapler, and buttons.

The first step is to go through your magazine and tear out pages.  You can group them in colors like my sister did or you can make each pinwheel random, more like the J. Crew window display.  Once you have pages torn out you want to accordion fold each page like this….

Starting with the edge of the long side of the page (the straight side) you will staple pages together until you can bend them around into a circle.  Once you have your circle then you will hot glue the center ends together.  The buttons will be used to cover up your hot glue job (this part my sis added….J. Crew’s didn’t have buttons…..i like it better with them!).

And here is the finished product….

You can make smaller pinwheels by folding the pages in half length wise after the accordion fold.

She attached hers to the wall above her great headboard.  You could also suspend them from the ceiling by using thumb tacks/push pins and fishing line.  Could be the start of a great mobile!

This is a perfect DIY project that cost little money but makes a huge statement.  So whimsical and colorful…they could be used in so many different ways.  They would be great for party decorations as well!

So, the next time you are strolling through the mall, or any retail area, take a look at the window displays.  They are great places to get ideas!
