Happy Weekend!

SVspringcolor Happy Weekend!

Image via ivorytears

These colors really spoke to me this week – it seems like this time of year it’s the thing on my mind!  From neons to pastels (and mixing the two), color is everywhere this spring, and I’m loving it! A few other finds from the week:

The announcement that there will be an Anchorman sequel pretty much made my day yesterday….to celebrate, I think we need this Ron Burgundy onesie, stat.

For our Okie peeps, check out this great Scissor-tailed Flycatcher print.  Coming soon to a gallery wall in my house…

LOVE the look (and the food) at this girl’s night pizza party.

DIY of the week: Painted pots.  I’m actually going to try this over the weekend – wish me luck!

Wallflower Scarf from Orla Kiely

I have always loved scarves and fabric as wall art, hanging sarongs gathered from mine and my sisters travels way back in college. I’ve been taking a new interest in scarves since designing a young girl’s bedroom with an exotic flair and would love to pick up some new ones for my own collection. I have just the place for the Orla Kiely Wallflower Scarf above. Isn’t it beautiful?

It is so inspirational I immediately knew what I wanted to pair with it, so I set out to find just the right amount of gold, black and white. Yes, I’m still stuck on metal accents. I don’t think it’s going away any time soon since it started about 8 or 9 years ago and I just keep on thinking of more things to paint gold!

FLOS Spun Table Lamp from Utility Design

This was exactly the mix of mid-century style and Hollywood glam for me. Who could pass up an ultra shiny black lamp with such great lines as this one? The room I’m imagining is a sitting room off an entry, a casual place that doubles its use as my library and where I savor a cup of tea and catch up with friends. It needs to have some glamour I think.

Gold Leaf Round Table from One Kings Lane

I think I have a weakness for round, shiny side tables. I found about ten round, gold tables that I liked and finally chose this one because it is feminine without being over the top and simple and clean.  When in doubt simple and clean often win at my house, because they will blend more seamlessly with multiple styles in an eclectic space without cluttering.

I know that was short and sweet, but I’ve been having a slow computer (they say slow as molasses, but I think i could have poured out 5 jars of the stuff in the 1 hour and 9 minutes it took to load the PH site today). Needless to say I have much more to add, like this Modern Classic Leather Bench from Modern Classic Home and Furniture. But my patience is thin and now there is not enough time to watch this beast of a computer think before I must leave for work. As they say, I’ll be back icon smile Scarves as Wall Art Current Attractions

My how time flies!  As the Prairie Hive gang sat down for our meeting this week, we realized that it’s our one-year Blog-iversary!  We started off pretty quietly last year, intentionally keeping our project on the DL to give ourselves time to get used to blogging, but as I looked back on that first month or two of posts, I think we came up with some great stuff!

Here are a few of my faves from “way back when”:

Spring Workout Time

The weather has been absolutely beautiful this week!  Sun shining and in the 80′s.  Because of this, I am reminded that summer is right around the corner.  And that means shorts, tanks, and swim wear.  Yikes!

So, if you have been hibernating for the winter it is time to come out and get your workout on.  For me, it always helps to have some great gear to sport.

spring workout1 Spring Workout Time

1.  Ello Glass Water Bottle, Target - Gotta have lots of water.  If I bring it with me I drink a lot more than if I don’t.  Need those 8 – 10 glasses of water a day!

2.  Women’s Racerback Active Tank, Old Navy - Having a great tank means you can do double duty.  You can run, do yoga, whatever you choose.  On those spring days that are still a little chilly you can always layer up with a light jacket.

3.  GapFit gFlex Capris, Gap - Black workout pants are a girls best friend.  Gap has a great selection of lengths and styles that are all very comfortable.

4.  Nike Women’s 2-in-1 Running Short, Dick’s Sporting Goods - If you are a runner or want to be a runner, be sure and get some good running shorts.  They will be much more comfortable than any other type of short that you have.  There are many different colors and patterns available!

5.  Women’s Active Duffle Bag, Old Navy - For me to stay consistent with working out, I have to make sure and take my workout clothes with me in the morning when I leave the house.  I have found that if I come home after work I am less likely to change and drive to the gym.  The couch always seems to call my name at that time of day.  So, I pack my gym bag the night before and set it by the door so I can grab it on my way out.  That way at the end of the work day I can go directly to the gym….it’s like a daily meeting!

6.  Fitness by Cathe Orange Rainbow Yoga Mat, Dick’s Sporting Goods - Your personal yoga mat can come in handy not only for yoga, but also for sit-ups, push-ups, etc.  It’s nice b/c then you aren’t on the icky gym floor….or using a dirty mat!

7.  Shoes are the most important items when it comes to working out.  Having the wrong shoes can very easily cause injuries.  If you live in Tulsa, or close by, I would suggest you stop by one of the Fleet Feet stores.  They will help you find the exact shoe that fits you best, and even explain to you why.  They have a great selection of athletic footwear.  Fleet Feet also has many different training programs that will help you meet running goals…whether you are a beginner or a life long runner.  I participated in one of their 5K programs, No Boundaries, a couple of years ago.  A great way to learn the proper way to run….and also a great time to socialize (sign up with a friend or two and you will be looking forward to your run)!  Oh, and I just have to say that I am loving all of the colorful options in shoes these days!

As always, if you have some personal favorites feel free to share!  Here’s to toned arms and booties for the summer!

PH Travels: Oklahoma City Shopping

We added a “Travels” section in our latest issue of Praire Hive!  We’ve decided to take a road trip for each issue (yippee!) and share with you the great finds we come across.  From places to stay, food to eat or shopping musts, we will report back on what we find.

For our first excursion, we headed down to Oklahoma City where we found some magnificent independent stores!

Our very first stop was a real treasure.  The Antique Avenue Market is located on Western Ave, conveniently close to I-44.  Each of us immediately knew that we would want to come back with trucks to load up on some great pieces.

Our favorite part of this large market was discovering that the owner’s son is a very talented furniture maker – Matt Parsons of Van Parsons.  Matt uses reclaimed along with innovative, industrial materials.  You can see a bookshelf and a flat file island in the picture above.  They were beautiful!  His stuff is definitely worth checking out.

The next stop – French Cowgirl - on our itinerary was just down Western Ave from there.  It was a colorful boutique with funky home accessories, fun jewelry, and fabulous clothing.  What a great place to  pick up a unique outfit or one-of-a-kind gift!

Next, we visited Classen Curve with its striking architecture and upscale shops.  This premiere shopping center is home to stores such as On a Whim, Uptown Kids, and Steven Giles.

Next, we sought out the Plaza District.  This historic OKC neighborhood is currently being revitalized with renovations of existing buildings and with the energy of the new art galleries and unique boutiques.  I definitely would like to check out one of their monthly artwalks with live music.

Another favorite shopping spot was located in this District - Collected Thread, a boutique featuring handmade items, most of which is locally made.  As a matter of face, we witnessed the owner, Lindsay Zodrow, make some of the adorable onesies pictured below as we chatted with her and her adorable dog!

These are just a few places that we were able to hit up on our little excursion.  And we loved what we found (and had so much fun!) that we can’t wait to return to the OKC!

Neon Now!

So, does the word NEON conjure up images such as this one?

I personally have fond memories of neon in the form of these…

or maybe this…

I’m pretty sure I had some pretty awesome T-Shirts and plastic hairbows painted with a product very similar to this one.

The thing is… neon is back.  It’s out there in so many ways.  And it’s great.  A little neon just steps everything up a notch- makes things just a little more edgy.

You can incoporate it into your home… check out this beautiful green door…

MANDAY: Make Time for Yourself

With more success comes more leisure right? WRONG! More success brings more work. People hear about your success through referrals, and you actually find yourself with less time. Here are three things I do to treat myself without cutting into my day.

1. Proper Sleep. I’ve had poor sleep my whole life. I found out it’s not that uncommon. I’ve gone to a doctor. I suggest that you do as well.  But in lieu of that try Melatonin. It’s over the counter. I believe it comes in 2mg, 3mg and 5mg. I take 3mg. That coupled with a religious sleep schedule will change your life. In THE weight gain month of the year, December, I lost 12 pounds. I owe it to consistent sleep regimen. In bed by 11, up by 6:30.
2. A Proper Shave. All you need is a mirror for the shower, shaving soap / cream ( I suggest eshave.com), a badger hair brush to lather it on (DO NOT skip this step. Take the time to do it right. Eshave and Jack Black make great brushes as well as The Art of Shaving), and a razor. 1. Take the first part of your shower fast. i.e. shampoo & soap. 2. crank the heat and soak your face to open up your pores 3. bust out your badger hair brush and shaving soap and brush a thick creamy lather on your face 4. use your mirror and razor and shave – this is luxury. Soak it up.
MANDAY Treat01 MANDAY: Make Time for Yourself

3. Have A Proper Cigar.  While I love a whisky or scotch just as much as the next guy, it’s impossible to have one and keep on working. You also can’t have one after work and then go back to work. Cigars are amazing for the opposite reason. They take 30 – 40 minutes to smoke. And when you’re done, you can continue your day or night with all your wits. Here’s the startup I suggest. 1. Buy a humidor at a cigar shop. It needs to have hygrometer in it to measure the moisture. 2. By a Xikar lighter. Matter of fact, buy Xikar everything. They have lifetime warranty on all their products. For their lighters I recommend the Element. I have the chrome one. It has a dual butane torch and a cigar punch at the bottom.
MANDAY Treat02 MANDAY: Make Time for Yourself
image via Xikar
In addition you’ll need some fuel for your lighter. Xikar makes a 100ml butane bottle that sells for about $5. Lastly you need a cigar. Any cigar shop worth a damn will have Drew Estate’s Undercrown. The real jewel is the Drew Estate’s Liga Privada No.9. It’s only carried in Tulsa at Fogue & Bates out south. They only let you buy two at a time. But everyone has Undercrowns and they’re great.
MANDAY Treat03 MANDAY: Make Time for Yourself
I suggest buying a box and dropping them in your humidor. Surprise yourself and break for a smoke at the back of your parking lot at 10:30am. It’s wonderful. Go back to work feeling like a million bucks. Or, use a cigar as your reward for the end of the day.
Regardless, these three things will not shorten your day. A proper sleep regimen will help you lose weight and heighten your senses. A proper shave is luxurious and will leave you feeling and looking good. A proper smoke is a vice you can look forward to that won’t unnecessarily cut into your day and won’t rob you of your wits. You deserve to be treated well. But let’s face it, with success comes more work. But that doesn’t mean you can’t still have time for yourself.

Happy Weekend!

I’ve been scouring Pinterest for inspiration for my potted plants this year, and as usual, have been slightly overwhelmed by the good, the bad, the ugly…and of course, the WAY out of my league (see above).  Nonetheless, now that it seems that spring is here to stay, I’m planning on spending some time tomorrow working on my front and back porches…at least with some planning, if not potting.   How are you enjoying this fantastic weather?

While I was stuck inside thanks to the rain this week, I found these to share:

Great idea to jazz up a door (even just the neon would be fun)…and some cute doggies.

Or take it a step further…STRIPES!

(Nursery Sneak Peek!  Stay tuned for a full tour soon!)

While I definitely don’t know everything there is to know about newborn care, I have found it extremely helpful to hear/read about other new moms’ favorite things as I’ve gone through the first couple months of motherhood, so I thought I would start a new series sharing my favorites as I go through this journey step by step.

There are endless lists out there reviewing baby products, so I won’t go through every car seat, diaper and blanket.  Instead, I want to share some of the things that I’ve found especially helpful, wish someone would have told me about sooner, or just want to make sure new moms know about (baby product options are so overwhelming there’s always something you have missed!).

SVbabyessentials2 New Mama Necessities: Newborn
ESSENTIALS:
Aden and Anais Swaddle Blankets: In addition to coming in tons of adorable (but not too cheesy) prints, these muslin blankets are soft, a great size and can be used not only for swaddling, but for a nursing cover, burp cloth, play blanket or changing mat in a pinch.
spacer New Mama Necessities: Newborn
Swaddlepods/Woombies: So yes, you have to get over the fact the they look a little like a baby straight jacket, but these are wonderful in the middle of the night when swaddling with a regular blanket challenges your dexterity and patience. It’s s little strange to get used to zipping the baby up in a pouch, but ours relaxes and falls asleep as soon as we get him in it. It keeps their little arms from flailing around and scaring them but has enough stretch for some wiggle room.
spacer New Mama Necessities: Newborn

Side Snap Onesies: Dressing a tiny newborn is scary business. These are great for the first few days, when you’re afraid you will hurt them if you pull something over their little heads, and later, when the baby is being particularly fussy and you don’t want to make it worse. Gerber makes inexpensive 3 packs (and the patterns are so sweet!), if you want to get fancy, we had favorites from Kate Quinn organics and Tea Collection as well.

spacer New Mama Necessities: Newborn

Kickypants: Hands down my favorite clothing for babies so far…introduced to me by fellow Hive mom, Lisa. Soft, stretchy and super cute patterns…these also seem to magically fit for longer than all the other clothing brands I have tried. I managed to hit a great sale and stocked up, keep your eyes out for one!

spacer New Mama Necessities: Newborn

Boppy: Yeah, yeah…everyone knows about these. But seriously, get one. Or some kind of breastfeeding pillow (I’ve heard great things about My Brest Friend as well)…and get extra covers, those things get messy! Even if you arent breastfeeding, they are just a good way to give your arms a break, and our baby loves to just chill out in his and watch us go about our business.

spacer New Mama Necessities: Newborn

Cloth diapers: Not for actual diapering, silly (although if you are going that route – props to you.  I had good intentions of trying but convenience and cost won out in the end). These old school white cloths can be used as a stand in for burp cloths, bibs, and most importantly, a diaper change shield for little boys. Those cute little tepees are clever, but don’t actually do much good. We go through a stack if about 10 cloths a day, and keep them stashed in every room.

spacer New Mama Necessities: Newborn

Hand Sanitizer: Keep one in every room.  Washing your hands is tough with a little one in tow, and you’ll want all your guests to use it before they try to put their grubby hands all over your baby.
spacer New Mama Necessities: Newborn
SANITY SAVERS:
spacer New Mama Necessities: Newborn
Angelcare Video/Movement/Sound Monitor: OK, so we got a little extreme with the monitoring. But for me, being able to see what he is doing keeps me from running into the room every 30 seconds to check on him.  For an extra level of crazy, ours even has an alarm that will go off if he stops breathing.  For me, the extra $50 was worth being able to sleep better, knowing I will be alerted immediately if something is wrong.   Adjust your investment accordingly, depending on your budget and level of paranoia.
spacer New Mama Necessities: Newborn
Bouncy chair: We chose this one from Bjorn because of its small size and portability…as well as the breathable fabric (our house gets toasty in the summer becuase of all the windows!).  It can also be used as a toddler chair once he gets older.  We can give our arms and backs a break but still interact with the baby while we eat dinner, work on the computer, do household tasks, etc. The toy bar is detachable and you can clip additional toys on as well. I also highly recommend getting one with a seat cover you can take off and wash…I’ve already had to do this twice, and he’s only been using it for a few weeks!
spacer New Mama Necessities: Newborn
Car Mirror: Driving with a newborn in the car is TERRIFYING. Every other driver suddenly becomes a crazy maniac, every intersection a death trap. In addition to the other drivers, I was gripped with paranoia that something horrible was happening in the car seat…were the straps too tight? Could he breathe? Did the blanket over his feet somehow make it over his face to suffocate him? (as it turns out, his silence merely indicated a nap – shocking, I know). The ability to peek back and see his sweet snoozing face saved me from pulling over to check.  Ours has cute toys, music, and now that he is older, he enjoys looking at himself in it as much as I like to see what he is doing!
spacer New Mama Necessities: Newborn
Lap Pads: Thank goodness someone told me about these! The pad on top of the changing pad (or sheets, or play yard, or blanket)…who knew?  So much easier to just throw this layer into the laundry, rather than constantly washing that oh-so cute changing pad cover (or sheets, or blanket).  We started with cheapie ones, but they are starting to look a little rough so I am planning on upgrading to these.
spacer New Mama Necessities: Newborn
Nightlights: When a friend told me I would be able to change a diaper in the dark, I had a hard time believing her. It’s not exactly pitch black in there at night, but thanks to our nightlights I don’t have to fumble around with a lamp or disrupt the “nighttime” vibe at 3am. We just grabbed cheapie ones at Lowes, but decorate to your hearts content (I am coveting this Jonathan Adler one). We also have one in our bedroom while the basinette is in there, I can just peek over and check in him whenever I start to hear fussing.
spacer New Mama Necessities: Newborn
White Noise: Because of our home’s temperature issues, we have a good old fashioned fan/heater combo, but I’m thinking of investing in a sound machine as well. Our baby sleeps so much better with the lull of white noise in the room, and we don’t freak out about clattering dishes or opening doors at night once he’s in bed.
spacer New Mama Necessities: Newborn
SVbabyfun2 New Mama Necessities: Newborn
spacer New Mama Necessities: Newborn
JUST FOR FUN:
Cuddle Monsters: This has been Bowie’s favorite stuffed animal so far – at just a few weeks old he would lay in his crib and stare at it and start “talking”.  I’m not sure if it’s the big eyes or fun patterns (on ours – see first photo) but he LOVES it.  Ours is from Dwelling Spaces,  featured in our Spring Issue’s cover story.
spacer New Mama Necessities: Newborn
Rockabye Baby CDs: I had seen these and just thought they were a shower gift novelty, but I got a few from my sister and we listen to them all the time!  The series takes popular music and turns the tune into an instrumental lullaby.  We are a pretty music centered family, so always have the ipod on in the nursery (I’ll share my favorite baby playlist in the next New Mama Post!)…these are great for bedtime or feeding times…soothing for babies, but provide a little entertainment for mom and dad as they can sing along with their favorite tunes (Kanye’s “Golddigger”, anyone?).
spacer New Mama Necessities: Newborn
Play Gym: I always cringed at the thought of having cheesy baby stuff all over my house.  While it’s taking over a little more than I anticipated, I found a few lines that are a little easier on the eyes.  Skip Hop is cute, affordable and widely available, or drool with me over this gorgeousness from Finn and Emma (actually, I drool over everything by Finn and Emma).
spacer New Mama Necessities: Newborn
Wrist Rattle and Foot Finder Set: It takes a while before newborns really start to interact with their toys, but this set has been a favorite from early on – we can hold them and practice tracking, let him feel the different textures, have finger puppet shows, etc…and now that he has discovered his hands a bit more, he is playing with them independently.
spacer New Mama Necessities: Newborn
Organic Toys – I just think these are great – they come in all kinds of shapes, give you and your baby a visual and textural difference from all the plastic and bright colors…and will be great later for teething.  I found the Guitar on the Little Alouette Etsy shop, and Little Sapling Toys makes all the states, plus a ton of other shapes.
spacer New Mama Necessities: Newborn
spacer New Mama Necessities: Newborn
FOR MOM:
spacer New Mama Necessities: Newborn
Nursing Tops: I was unsure of whether I needed these, but especially during those first few weeks where you pretty much just sit around the house nursing all day – these are extremely convenient.  I have a few of the pull down kind that are still on permanent rotation on weekends and evenings.
spacer New Mama Necessities: Newborn
*Speaking of just sitting around the house nursing all day, I found it helpful as well to have a little kit that I carried from room to room with me.  It was stocked with essentials: nipple cream, chapstick, my GIANT water jug (I have never been so parched in my life as during the last month of pregnancy and while breastfeeding), cloth diapers/burp cloths, a packet of crackers or a granola bar (for 4am breastfeeding munchies), an extra pacifier, etc.
spacer New Mama Necessities: Newborn
Healthy Snacks: After my husband went back to work, there were a few days where I just had to cram whatever food in my mouth that was within arms reach (and keep in mind, that’s only one arm).  Not ideal when you are providing nutrition for both another person and yourself, and trying to heal from birth.  A local company called Harvest Crate was nice enough to send me a fabulous New-Mama box full of yummy fruits and veggies…it was wonderful.  It would be a great gift, or just have someone run to the store and stock up for you.
spacer New Mama Necessities: Newborn
crate 1024x768 New Mama Necessities: Newborn
My Harvest Crate (sorry for the iphone pic…again, I was one-handed)
spacer New Mama Necessities: Newborn
Apps: There really is an app for everything…in fact, there are tons to track your baby’s feeding, sleep, diaper changes and more.  It sounds a little silly, but as the days and nights blur together and your doctor asks you how many times you’ve fed/changed them, you won’t have a clue.  There are also some that offer daily tips on things you might be seeing with your baby, offer ideas for playtime, tips for moms, quick reference guides and more.  I used the What to Expect and  WebMD Baby, but have heard great things about  lots of others as well.
spacer New Mama Necessities: Newborn
AND a little unsolicited advice:
One of the best pieces of advice that I got was to take some control over visitors for the first week or two (or however long you want).  I have yet to meet anyone that actually wants a ton of people at their house the first day(s) they get home from the hospital. Whatever you are personally OK with, just remember that this is YOUR experience and your family.  There are several factors to think about – you’re exhausted, you are pretty much nursing your baby around the clock (I literally spend a whole day in nothing but a nursing bra and cardigan before my nursing tops showed up in the mail), and just generally trying to get things figured out.  Also, your hormones will be out of control, so the smallest piece of “advice” from a well-meaning visitor might send you over the edge.  For me, it was also really important to spend some quality time bonding with my new family.  My husband got a week off work and I wanted us all to spend as much time together as possible that week, getting to know each other, letting him bond with the baby and just learning the ropes.
spacer New Mama Necessities: Newborn
Everyone will have a different way of handling things, but here’s what I did: I asked that visitors call ahead before stopping by, and wasn’t afraid to tell people if it was a bad time (which there are alot of – between feeding and trying to sleep while the baby sleeps, there aren’t many  free hours). I limited drop ins to around 2 a day.  I went ahead and stepped into the other room if it was time to nurse (every 2 hours the first week or so), no matter who had just arrived or what was going on.  And I used my husband as the bearer of all this news.  I’m pretty sure I made a few people mad, but I didn’t want to sacrifice my baby’s health (or my own) to save hurt feelings.  The way I see it, you’ve got a window to act like a crazy bitch, you may as well take advantage of it.
spacer New Mama Necessities: Newborn
As the weeks went on, I loosened up a bit, but still stayed pretty hunkered down.  In my mind, those 6 weeks I had off work were my chance to spend all day, every day getting to know this little person who had spent 9 months inside me…and I didn’t want any distractions.  I’m so glad I did – turns out, he’s an amazing guy.

So there’s my take on the first couple months of motherhood for newbies…next edition: Back to Work!
I’d love to hear about your favorite products, tips and new mama tricks…please let me know!!

March celebrates all things peanut (butter)

KApb1 March celebrates all things peanut (butter)Image via Wikipedia

I should just title this post, “Yay for peanut butter.”

Because March is a famous month — for peanuts. It’s National Peanut Month, and there’s nothing better in my mind than peanut butter.

It started when I was in church as a little girl. For Vacation Bible School, we made these delicious honey peanut butter balls. They were so delicious I can taste them right now.

Since then, it’s been on — can’t get over how much I still love it.

I hated going to the dentist with a passion as a child, but if I was good we got a sweet treat afterwards at Baskin Robbins (I know, I know…sweets after the dentist is bad, but I love my mom for doing this).

One day, I tried the Peanut Butter & Chocolate flavor and its’ still my favorite ice cream ever!

So this post is about two of my favorite things: Sweet treats and peanut butter. What are your favorite peanut or peanut buttery treats?

KApb2 March celebrates all things peanut (butter)1. Peanut Butter Sandwich Cookies, Martha Stewart Living

2. Homemade Peanut Butter Cups, The Sweetest Kitchen

3. Peanut butter popcorn, The Girl Who Ate Everything

4. Sugar Coated Peanuts, Baking Bits and Bobs

5.  Peanut Butter Sheet Cake, The Girl Who Ate Everything

(Note: I will be trying this recipe as soon as humanly possible so I copied it here below.)

Peanut Butter Sheet Cake from The Girl Who Ate Everything

1/4 cup creamy peanut butter
1 cup water
1/2 cup butter

Mix together the following and add to the above mixture:
