I’ve been on a search for a new work tote. For about 3 months. After hours spent searching local shops, department stores and online – and 3 returns later – I’m beginning to feel a bit like Goldilocks. Too big, too small, too structured, not structured enough. Too many pockets, not enough pockets, handles too short, handles too long. Does this bag exist? I’ve also been on the fence about whether to get an investment bag that will last a while, or just settle for something that will work for this season…oh, the agony. I’ve even looked into having one custom made. In a perfect world, I would just trot over to Saks and pick up the ultimate fantasy bag, but alas, I think it’s a tad out of my budget.
Since I feel like a bit of an expert in the area at the moment, I thought I’d share a few of my favorites from my search. While all won’t quite work for me and just what I need, these would all make excellent choices for someone with a bit less… particular needs.

1. Vinyl Shopper, $99, Zara 2. Melbu Tote, $248, Anthropologie 3. Chelsea Leather Shopper, $298, Coach 4. Kimichi Blue Envelope Tote, $59, Urban Outfitters 5. Alto Large Tassel Bag, Dooney & Bourke 6. RED Valentino Bow Tote Bag, $315 Saks Fifth Avenue 7. Built Essential Work Tote $89, Built NY

Have you looked at Felix & Jayne bags? They’re locally made, good sized and sturdy as can be! I’ve used one as my (oversized) purse for a year and a half now and can’t complain!
I’ve been eyeing the Zara tote online for a while. Wish I could see one in person…(hint, hint to ZARA–come to Tulsa!). Nice round up!
So, I may be laughed out of the comments section for this comment, but have you considered a high-end diaper bag? Until I had my kid last year, I didn’t realize how useful those suckers can be, with all the pockets and sections and padding and water-resistant fabrics. I just got a great Coach diaper bag — patent leather, embroidered, with tote handles and an over-the-body strap — that I’m using for my work gear and camera.
As for the diapers? My kid has his own mini-backpack so I don’t have to lug around all his stuff with mine!
Briana – I have an F&J bag from WAAAY back when, but didn’t know they made sturdy ones. Will have to check it out!
Marisa – That’s a great option! I have a (super cool) diaper bag that I use for – yes, diapers, etc. but never thought about looking at one as a work bag too. The whole Diaper-Work-Small Wallet Type bag issue has plagued me since I had my baby. A whole new system to get used to!
Oh yeah, she’s completely revamped and evolved her line. I absolutely DROOL over her new stuff!
