Well hello there, summer! After a week of temps over 100, I’m kind of over it, how about you?  Alas, it’s only (almost) July.  Isn’t it the worst when a holiday falls mid-week like the 4th?  While I certainly appreciated the Wednesday off, it always makes the celebration a little lackluster.  What are your plans?

While you’re cooling off inside, check these out:

Summer treat to try: Prosecco Floats.  YUM.

Cutest trash cans ever.

Do you have a stash of ends of candles in jars (or is that just me?)?  I found a kindred spirit…and a how-to on getting the wax out!

Usually when I hear “wall decal”  I cringe a little.  But these Paige Russell designs from The Wall Sticker Company have won me over.

And finally, I was saddened to hear about Nora Ephron’s death this week.  When Harry Met Sally is still one of my Top 5 favorite movies.  To remember – and smile – here are some of the best quotes from her movies.

Media Muse: Rules of Civility

I recently finished the novel Rules of Civility by Amor Towles, and thought it was the perfect way to kick off a new blog series…Media Muse, where I’ll take inspiration from my favorite books, movies, and yes, TV shows.

I’ve always been a huge fan of the look of the flapper era, and when I heard about this book from a friend, I couldn’t help but be intrigued…

Set in 1930’s New York, Rules of Civility sets the stage with glamour, jazz and of course, martinis.  In addition to the twists and turns of the story, the imagery conjured up throughout the pages makes it a great read.  When the main character, Katey Kontent,  visits the bachelor pad of the mysterious Tinker Grey, she describes a Art Deco style building, but with sleek International Style furnishings, all set off with the perfect accessory, the tragic Evie Ross – ever present in silk, fur and gin.

And to get you a little more in the mood, here’s a recipe for the perfect gin martini.  Curl up with one and dive into this book!

from Chow
INGREDIENTS
  • 2 ounces dry gin
  • 1 ounce dry vermouth
  • Ice
  • Olives or a twist of lemon, for garnish
INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Place a cocktail glass in the freezer to chill.
  2. Combine the gin and vermouth in a shaker, fill it halfway with ice, and stir vigorously until well chilled, about 20 seconds. Strain into the chilled glass. Garnish with olives or a twist of lemon. (If using a twist, be sure to run the slice over the glass’s rim.)

Summer Freezer Jams

plum jam 1 Summer Freezer Jams

A few weeks ago my mother came home from the farm with a sack full of plums from my grandparents plum tree.  While I was excited to see all the fruit I was a bit overwhelmed with the thought of having to de-pit all of them and figuring out what to make.

So, I called in mom for an evening of dealing with all the plums and raspberries that we had just recently picked.

With the plums we decided to make a batch of freezer jam and then freeze the remaining juice, in quart freezer bags, to use in desserts in the future.  We also decided to make a raspberry peach freezer jam with some of the fresh berries.

Surprisingly it was quite easy….thanks to Sure Jell (available at grocery stores in the baking aisle).

We followed the recipe that comes in the box and it was super easy!  The part that took the longest (not bad) was getting the plum juice ready.

I snapped a few photos while we were making the plum juice.  One word of advice….when it starts to boil don’t walk too far away or you will be cleaning up boiled over plum juice!

plum jam 2 Summer Freezer Jams

To start, you want to wash all of those little plums and make sure there are no stems and take out any ones that are mushy or bad.

plum jam 3 Summer Freezer Jams

Using the largest pot you have place your plums inside (I used my colander insert with my stock pot for ease of draining) and fill with water to the tops of the plums.

plum jam 4 Summer Freezer Jams

Now simply wait and let the water come to a boil (this is where you shouldn’t wander too far away!).  You will start to smell the wonderful plum aroma!

collander Summer Freezer Jams

So, you may be wondering how we avoided de-pitting all of those little guys.  Well, we used the antique colander pictured above.  It came in very handy…thanks grandma!

plum jam 6 Summer Freezer Jams

Once you can smell the plums, the water has turned a beautiful color and the fruit is mushy, you are ready to move on.  Place a bowl in your sink with the colander positioned over it and pour the plum juice and fruit into the colander.  This will catch the fruit, separating it from the juice.

plum jam 7 Summer Freezer Jams

Then you want to use the wood piece and smash the fruit getting as much juice out as possible.  This is how we avoided de-pitting every last one by hand!  The fruit is so mushy from boiling that it’s really easy.  You will get some “meat” going through the colander along with additional juice.  And that is how you make plum juice!

As mentioned earlier I decided to make one batch of plum freezer jam using the Sure Jell.  FYI, freezer jam is really quick and easy — no special tools needed — to make unlike actual jelly.  The catch is that you do have to store it in the freezer…can’t just sit in your pantry.  We just went by the recipe in the box, but basically you just add a lot of sugar to a certain amount of plum juice.  Then you heat the Sure Jell with water on the stove and pour into the sugary plum juice.  This sets for a few minutes and then you pour the mixture into canning jars (I bought mine at Target).  Once the jars are filled and lids are on you leave them on your counter for 24 hours (it will set up and not be liquidy) before storing in freezer.

(Note:  should be Plum Jam….not Jelly….ooops!)

The raspberry peach jam that I made was easy as well….probably easier b/c we didn’t have to go through the whole juice process.

The next time you have some fresh fruit on hand (think porter peaches) be sure and pick up a package of Sure Jell and make some freezer jam.  It makes plenty to share and whoever you share with will be very impressed!!

Yards of Inspiration

Despite the rising heat in our portion of the prairie over the past week, I have been working hard on my yard.  Both my front and back yards were blank slates when I moved in to my home just over a year ago.  And since then, I’ve decided it’s time to get a few projects going.  I definitely do not have a green thumb, but I’m starting to get the hang of this lawn maintenance stuff.  Or at the least- I am trying!

After all the manual labor, and while I let my body rest and clean the dirt out from under my fingernails, I’ve been searching for some inspiration images for flower beds and landscape ideas.  I thought I’d share some of my inspirations with you, and hopefully you gardeners out there can give me a few pointers!

Tablescape – Fourth of July!

4thpoppophorizontal Tablescape Fourth of July!

To set the table for a a casual, outdoor Fourth of July dinner, I used my usual standby white plates and a piece of burlap as a runner.  I’d found these great metal containers at Ted and Debbie’s – I love them with all kind of flowers and plants-  but for this table I chose to just add some roses from our garden and Queen Ann’s Lace and a little bit of Freesia from Whole Foods.

I found these napkins the other day on sale at Pottery Barn.  I love them – they’re summery and casual and the blue works great for the 4th of July-  but they’ll work just as easily for any summery event.   To add just a little bit of the 4th- I added a small amount of fireworks at each plate (which, by the way, I bought in Jenks just south of Tulsa.  That particular stand is raising money for the Jenks band – in case you’re interested in supporting a good cause!  You can’t buy fireworks within the Tulsa city limits.)

I’m always afraid to overdo a theme, so I try to make it as subtle as possible.  The red and white flowers with the blue on the napkins and a few (safe) fireworks is plenty for me.  Summery with a hint of holiday!  Plus, I’m not stuck with a bunch of decorations that I can’t use the rest of the year and probably wouldn’t want to reuse next year anyway.

Stripes are so eye-catching.  Every time I come across home decor images online or on Pinterest, I immediately stop to look, and occasionally, drool.

Stripes are so versatile, and thanks to some innovative designers, easy to re-invent.

No matter if your taste is ultra classic and conservative….

Or if your taste is wild and colorful…

There will be stripe for you. In the past few seasons, stripes have had a major re-invention. From broad, horizontal stripes in muted shades for curtains, to wild painted stripes on the wall, stripes are at once classic and modern.

I’m constantly drawn to stripes, even though I’ve been too chicken to try a bold striped wall, a striped floor or even a piece of furniture in my home. But what better time to try than now?

I love these bold, black and white striped areas that go all the way to the ceiling…so unexpected!

And look at this bright, unexpected striped door…need this for my dream beach cottage!

But in reality, I’m most likely to wear stripes. From nautical-inspired classic tops to cute dresses, you can’t beat a stripe in the summer!

And just for giggles, if you are into nail art, stripes are all the fashion manicure rage right now. Happy stripe hunting!

Well, it’s here.  Starting today, it looks like the temps are going to hover around the 100 mark for the next week or so….and all of us Okies are crossing our fingers that we aren’t in for another record-breaking summer like last year.  What are you doing to keep cool?

If you’re lounging inside…here are some of my faves from this week to keep you busy:

An INSANE popsicle recipe roundup.  Coconut Nutella or Carrot Cake + Almond Butter Pops anyone?

I’m totally inspired by Emily Henderson’s office organization.  Almost enough to start mine…

DIY of the week: Gold Tube Bracelets.  Perfect for people like me who are kind of afraid of the bead store.

So I tried these this week: Refrigerator Oats.  Good, in kind of a weird way.

And just to make you smile…Hey Girl, how about those dishes?

Peaches as Interior Inspiration

I’ve had peaches on my mind a lot lately and realized (with a little help from a friend) that I could channel it into interior inspiration. Often when I think of the color peach, I am transported back to the age of 12 in my friend’s bedroom with peach walls and mint green trim. (She was always stylin’)

Now, however, I think of fresh, ripe Porter peaches which happened to come in early this year. They have so many beautiful colors often just on one fruit and I think incorporating these as an accent in your home is a grand idea. I’ve gathered a couple of rooms and a roundup of wallpapers for you to enjoy.

If you’re a little intimidated to bring to much peach into your home, this might be the palette for you. Despite this being a teenager’s room, the gray elevates and keeps it sophisticated. The pops of lime set it off just right. Remember to add a twist like lime, olive, magenta or even tangerine orange to keep it from being too feminine.

Again with the pops of lime, but this room embraces peach in all it’s glory. From the saturated walls to the washed out ottomans, you get a range that creates a warm, cozy space.

Personally I think my favorite way to add peach to my palette would be with one large focal wall covered in wallpaper. From geometric to florals to skeletons in the closet, I’m sure I’ve found one you’ll like too.

These are just a few of my favorites and in the beginning of what looks to be a warm summer, my top two contenders are Amy Butler’s Memento and Skeletons in the Closet. What a great name, it makes me want to lounge on a hammock with a V.C. Andrews book. (Anyone remember those? Were those popular or did I just feel grown up getting to read them?)

Vintage Canisters {Dawn’s Deals}

It’s been a while since I’ve had the opportunity to go garage- or estate sale-ing (I’ve been out of town… or country… but more on that soon!).  Luckily, this past Saturday there was an estate sale near my house, so I made a quick stop in between errands.  Being the second day of the sale, everything was 25 percent off and mostly picked over.  But there was one thing that caught my eye.  Why wasn’t this adorable canister set not snatched up already?!  Oh well, everyone else’s oversight is my gain!  I snagged this deal for $18.75 before anyone else could realize what they were missing out on.  These will look great in my green-painted kitchen!

With my newest find under my belt, I’m now really looking forward to Vintage Market Days here in our area – Bixby, OK – coming up this weekend to see what other treasures I can find.  There will be antiques, art, furniture, and handmade goods (including booths by our very own Roxanne at Minnie Marie and our friend Bifftastica)!  I’m on the lookout for some specific pieces for my home, and have high hopes of finding just what I need here.  Come on out and see what kind of deals you can find!
