To set the table for a a casual, outdoor Fourth of July dinner, I used my usual standby white plates and a piece of burlap as a runner. I’d found these great metal containers at Ted and Debbie’s – I love them with all kind of flowers and plants- but for this table I chose to just add some roses from our garden and Queen Ann’s Lace and a little bit of Freesia from Whole Foods.

I found these napkins the other day on sale at Pottery Barn. I love them – they’re summery and casual and the blue works great for the 4th of July- but they’ll work just as easily for any summery event. To add just a little bit of the 4th- I added a small amount of fireworks at each plate (which, by the way, I bought in Jenks just south of Tulsa. That particular stand is raising money for the Jenks band – in case you’re interested in supporting a good cause! You can’t buy fireworks within the Tulsa city limits.)
I’m always afraid to overdo a theme, so I try to make it as subtle as possible. The red and white flowers with the blue on the napkins and a few (safe) fireworks is plenty for me. Summery with a hint of holiday! Plus, I’m not stuck with a bunch of decorations that I can’t use the rest of the year and probably wouldn’t want to reuse next year anyway.
