Home Friendly Pet Accessories

I love to design new cat hotels, dog beds and pet toys in my head but I never seem to implement any of my ideas. While searching for some pet solutions that won’t turn my house into a primary color mess, I bookmarked a few things to share.

Why is it that widely available children and pet toys and necessities just don’t seem to have much style? Has anyone else found a great source for outfitting our furry friends with panache? Please share.

I know I’ve included a couple of colorful toys here, but in the right home they’ll fit right in. Modern furniture, white walls and neutral floors can handle a little color. It’s probably best to stick with just one though. Color, that is. If your home is already colorful, try to keep with natural colors and textures so they will blend in and not steal attention from your decor.

1. Tug and Toss Dog Toy at Patina Stores. I love this tomato red right now! I think it’s just the right color to celebrate the last few days of color and if your into seasonal decorating, it could lead you right into fall.

2. Anderson Unleashed Life Dining Dog Bowls at Modern Tails. So pretty, you’d almost want to use that canister for cookies instead of dog treats.

3. Coco the Elephant at Jax and Bones. Is this guy cute? I’m not sure, but I really like him and of course he’s grey so that’s always a plus.

4. Mazee – Perplexus for Dogs at Think Geek. I’m pretty sure I’m going to buy this soon. Parting with $16 for puppy entertainment is a no brainer. Eddie (the one-year-old who thinks he’s still a little puppy) has a crazy run around energy fest around 8:00 every night. Just when I’m ready to wind down, or try anyway.

5. Felted Cat Bed at elevele. My cat would love this! And it looks so much better than the cardboard box lid he adopted and napped in for months. I just couldn’t bring myself to take it away.

6. fishhotel by Umbra. We’re not much of a fish family (for pets anyway) but this fish hotel is great. They stack, you could have a whole apartment complex of fish residents. So cool!

7. Wiltshire Pet Bed at Modern Tails. Simple, but sweet and geometrics never get old (well some do). This bed could easily live in a traditional or eclectic home.

8. BowHaus Modern Dog Furniture from Denhaus. I’ve been eyeing this for years it seems (not sure if it’s been out for years, but maybe). I think this would make a perfect side table for my side of the sofa. Although I haven’t figured out if Eddie or Jersey (the cat) would end up winning the battle and making this their new home.

Baby Food Makin’ – New Mama Necessities

One of the next major hurdles to tackle in this New Mama adventure – solid foods.  About mid-way through my pregnancy, my husband announced that he couldn’t wait to make our own food for the little guy.  My thoughts on the matter – “sure buddy, it’s all you”.  I’m not known for my prowess in the kitchen, and tend to lean toward anything involving the least amount of hassle possible…even more so with the additional stresses of motherhood.  But we also try to eat as healthy as we can around here – lots of produce, seasonal foods, whole grains, and the like (I’ll admit, the advantage of having a chef for a husband makes it a heck of alot easier to make it happen)…so why wouldn’t we start our baby off the same way?

We started pretty easy – avocado, zucchini, carrots, peas, bananas, etc. – but even I have been comfortable prepping this stuff.  It’s way easier than you would imagine, doesn’t take much time, and if you do it once or twice a week, you’re set for quite a while with freezer stock.  We have been doing just plain pureed foods so far, but are ready to venture into some herbs, meats and more complex flavors in the next month or so.  A friend gave me the Williams Sonoma Cooking for Baby book, which includes everything from basic purees (helps kitchen dummies like me with info like how long to steam things before tossing in the food processor) up to stews and snacks for toddlers.  It also includes lists like what foods to feed (and not feed) when, storage instructions, and basics like the best time of day to start the little one with solids. I’ve also referenced the Wholesome Homemade Baby Food site for both basic info and “recipes”, and recently ran across the NurtureBaby site, which I plan to start checking out as well.

Naturally, there are a million gadgets sold for baby food making.. I’m a little minimalist about some of this baby stuff (and by minimal, I mean “cheap”), so we use an old fashioned steam basket and food processor, but I’ve always thought that this happy little guy would make the task fun (and it’s all in one, so fewer dishes!)

For storage, we like these OXO blocks – they come in a couple of different sizes, come with a freezer tray, and are dishwasher safe.  I just write on the top with a whiteboard marker what’s in it and the date, and we are set.  We also just picked up one of these freezer trays for overflow (you could use a regular ice cube tray as well, but I liked the lid on this one).

We were also given a small food mill similar to the one shown here – it’s great for softer foods like avocado and banana, or if you’re mashing up a small amount of something and don’t want to drag out the food processor.

As far as the actual feeding goes – I don’t have a strong preference on baby dishes, spoons, etc.  I will weigh in on bibs, however – I was given some great ones as a gift – they are lightweight, waterproof…we just rinse them off after a meal, hang to dry and use again. I can’t find the exact brand ANYWHERE online, but the ones shown are as close as I could get…just find something easy to rinse – because the last thing any new mom needs is MORE laundry!

However you go about making, storing or feeding your baby, just be sure to have the camera ready the first few times they taste something new.  We have some of the most hilarious and precious pics of our guy experiencing these new tastes…the first of many to come!

DIY: Coin Necklace

I returned from my trip to Ireland (you can see about that here and here) with a few Euros unspent.  I know!  How did that happen?!  So far, the pretty foreign currency has been sitting in a bowl on my dining table, patiently awaiting my next trip to Europe.

DET CoinNecklace 3 DIY: Coin Necklace

But they won’t be just hanging around much longer.  Not after I had dinner with my friend Katie this past weekend.  Katie recently jetted off to Norway, England and Paris.  She also returned with some coins – krone, pence and a euro.  Being the clever and stylish cookie that she is, she asked her dad to drill a couple of small holes into a couple of the coins (the krone already had a hole).  Then she slipped a simple chain through the holes to create a necklace full of memories.  I loved the necklace and the idea!

DET CoinNecklace 1 DIY: Coin Necklace

It seems easy enough.  You just need a clamp to hold down the coin, and drill a hole with a hand drill.  I’d recommend protective eyewear as well.  I found this website on how to make a hole in a coin.  You can be as simple as you want or get as fancy as you can.  Here is an etsy store – Finds and Farthings – that sells some cool coin jewelry.  But if you use your own pieces, it will definitely be a good keepsake from your adventure!

DET CoinNecklace 2 DIY: Coin Necklace

So I guess my coins will be hanging around a bit longer, after all.  But now around my neck.

Black and Gold for Fall

I’m happy to admit I’ve always been a fan of black and gold.

It’s bold and ostentatious, but that’s what I love about it. I’ve always loved the color pairing for clothing and jewelry — especially accessories.

So I’m happy to see black and gold making a comeback of sorts!

Whether you go completely over the top, or scale it down a bit — black and gold is a classic neutral pairing. Thanks to the metallic craze that keeps building momentum, it’s easier to find well-designed gold accessories these days.

Black and gold to me just screams glam. You may not live in Anna Wintour’s penthouse (I assume she lives in one?), but you can dream.

Fantasy is a healthy part of home design, right?

Here are some attainable choices for black and gold schemes:

As we settle in for a work weekend to get the Prairie Hive Mag Fall Issue laid out, I can’t help but wish my work space looked a little more like this! It’s always hectic when we get down to crunch time on each issue, but this Fall seems even busier, with summer holidays, back to school, and a slew of life changes for our team (last month’s wedding for Roxanne and this fall’s baby for Alayna!).

While we get cranking, here are some of my faves from this week:

Combining TV and design (aaahhh!)…favorite sitcom sets, illustrated in floor plans.

PB&J….frozen, on a stick.  Sigh.

Love the idea of putting your zodiac sign on your side of the bed.

And finally…Babies Eating Lemons.  You can’t help but laugh…it’s cute overload, I promise.

Craft Party Friday Fun

I think joining a craft party is a great way to unwind on Friday after a work week, how about you? It’s so easy to get lost in cutting, gluing, painting, wrapping, stitching and more and before you know it, any stress has just melted away.

I’m sure we’ll see you all at the Etsy Craft Party tonight, being held at made : The Indie Emporium Shop downtown. Not only will it be a fun time, to craft, visit, meet new friends, but it’s the perfect time of year to get in the spirit of the upcoming craft season. The holiday craft shows are getting ready to start and before you know it, it’ll be Christmas! (Mr. Crowe, how many days?)

The theme this year is “Wish You Were Here” meaning to evoke feelings, memories, art and of course crafts of your hometown. I think it’s great to take some time every once in awhile to reflect on home, the family, friends and culture that helped form you. We all live in culturally rich places and this reminds us to be in tune with them.

Here’s some inspiration to get the excitement going. I’m sure after coming to the Etsy Craft Party, you’ll want to host your own soon for friends. Let’s start with a crafty invite:

It might even be fun to have your craft party at a central location. I think sewing studios and coffee shops would be great.

Fall Decor – Football Season!

LWwreathondoor Fall Decor Football Season!

I’m pretty sure I don’t know anyone in Oklahoma who doesn’t love college football.  The second the kids are back in school it seems everyone is ready to break out their favorite team’s gear and decor.  We’re big University of Oklahoma fans at our house, and every year I like to put something out front to show our team spirit.  But I don’t like to get too out of control – just a little something.  (And now that I’ve painted our front door Texas orange – I definitely have to hang something red!)

I’d been thinking about what I could look for – or make – and I ran across this rope at Lowe’s.  Red and White – perfect!  And since rope is such a big trend right now, I thought it would be a fun, modern way to spruce up a wreath and give it a little Sooner spirit.  And for those of you who are not OU fans – no worries- Lowe’s had MANY colors, textures and sizes of rope, as I’m sure other hardware stores do too.

LWwreathmaterials Fall Decor Football Season!

I started with a plain straw wreath from the craft store.  It was only $4.99 and if you’re more diligent that I, you can use your Hobby Lobby coupon straight from your smart phone and get it 40% off!  The polyester rope is from Lowe’s.  I stood there forever trying to decide which combination to use and I finally picked the red and white and I used the plain red for accent and to hang it on the door.

LWwreathwrapping Fall Decor Football Season!

Making the wreath was really as simple as wrapping the rope around until I’d covered the whole wreath.  So easy!  I left a long piece at the beginning so I could just tuck it in the back – I didn’t even use glue.  I left the plastic wrapper on the wreath to make it easier to slide the rope where it needed adjusting.  Altogether, the project took about 125 feet of rope and each package was about $6.

LWwreathpennant Fall Decor Football Season!

For a little extra embellishment, I added the paper pennant.  I used paper because it was inexpensive and easy, but of course fabric or felt would be cute, too.  I just cute the shape of a pennant and I used a Cricut to cut the letters; although it would be just as easy to freehand them or use a stencil and cut them out.

I glued the whole thing to a piece of floral wire which made it very easy to stick into the straw wreath and it kept it secure.  It also makes it easy to change up your wreath should you decide to root for another team or use it for Christmas!

Altogether, it only took me about an hour to make, and I ended up with a great new door decoration! A fresh twist on the traditional door wreath.  Of course there are so many different materials you can use to customize yours to your own taste, decor, etc., the sky’s the limit!  So have fun and…

Crafty with Yarn {Baby Shower}

DET YarnAlayna Crafty with Yarn {Baby Shower}

It’s such an exciting time with a plethora of babies-to-be around here!   First, we will have a new addition to the Hive soon.  Our very own Alayna (pictured above) is expecting her first child – a baby boy – in November, and we couldn’t be more excited for her!!!  And our good friend Briana, over at Bifftastica, will welcome her first bundle of joy – a baby girl – in a matter of weeks.

A couple of weekends ago, I had the honor of co-hosting a Baby Shower for Ms. Briana.  With her being the creator of the Alliday Show, an all-handmade arts and crafts fair here in Tulsa, and being a member of the make:Tulsa group, I felt pressure to craft some great decorations for her celebration.  Well, that and I love creating things for my friends!  Briana is a self-proclaimed anti-pink kind of girl, and has a life-long love affair with the color green.  So the invitation featured a green and yellow leaf motif (which went well with her nursery wall paper!  Check out her nursery transformation here).

DET YarnBriana Crafty with Yarn {Baby Shower}

(Briana, her husband and I had a photoshoot this past Monday.  This photo is a little sneak peek for her.  Isn’t she a lovely, glowing mommy-to-be?!)

With all of that in mind, I chose yarn to create a variety of decorations.  I purchased four balls of yarn – emerald green, lime green, yellow and aqua blue.

DET YarnSupplies Crafty with Yarn {Baby Shower}

First, I made a lot of poms using equal amounts of each color of yarn.  You can a tutorial on how I did this in our magazine Issue #1!  I hung some of the pom garland above the cake table, draped it across the fireplace mantle where the presents were placed, and decorated the food table with the extra strands.

Then I created a centerpiece of a “Yarn Chandelier”.  There are a lot of tutorials out there, but I used the one over at Hostess {With the Mostess}.

And finally, I took the leftover string and wrapped up the gift for the baby girl.

I really liked the end results and the cohesive look to all the decor, yet the yarn was used in a variety of ways.  Do you have any other yarn crafts that you would have used for a Baby Shower?

Could triangles be the new chevron?  (Please?  Chevron is cute and all, but is anyone else OVER IT?)

From isosceles to acute, these geometry staples are showing up everywhere – including wall treatments to fabrics to jewelry.  The patterns range from regular to random, both equally fresh.  Some inspiration, and some of my favorite product picks:

Having the boss for dinner? Entertaining under pressure

Even the best home entertainers get thrown a curve ball now and again.

And yes, occasionally a challenge greets you that you’re truly not expecting. Hosting a dinner with the boss or co-workers could be one of the more stressful “little” events that come your way.

Usually, these dinners are benign and easy, safely tucked away at a restaurant.

But if you’re up for a big promotion or want to encourage team building or camaraderie, hosting that dinner party at your home is a nice touch. Talk about bonus points!

dinnerparty Having the boss for dinner? Entertaining under pressureImage via Design Sponge

No matter how many dinner parties you’ve had, hosting one for the boss will be a little different — and nerve-wracking. No need to whip out “Mastering the Art of French Cooking” by Julia Child (unless you’ve already mastered it.)

But you will need to use your brain – just like you do at work every day.

Here are some tips for being the hostess-with-the-mostess at your next co-workers mingle.

Plan ahead. Make sure your guests will be comfortable and properly satiated.  If your boss is a vegan, you need to know so you don’t serve prime rib and chocolate mousse. Try setting the table the night before.  And on the invitation or Evite, include a set time, such as 7 to 10 p.m. so everyone knows when it’s time to leave the party. Very important for you!

barcart Having the boss for dinner? Entertaining under pressureImage via Northern Light

Beware: Cocktails are tricky. You want people to have fun – but not too much fun. The last thing you need is a sloppy dinner guest to spoil the party – and that includes you! Serve one or two cocktails and beer before dinner, then serve wine (unless, of course, your boss insists on something else. Give her what she wants!). And have plenty of water, soda and other beverages available on or near the table at all times – this is when a beautiful bar cart comes in handy!

Plan some party talk. Have something interesting to talk about that isn’t work-related. Are you an avid gardener? Show off your hydrangeas.  Does your husband have a new, super-techy gadget? Have him bust it out. Just make sure you have something fun to engage the guests in, for fear of that terrifying post-dinner lull. Martha Stewart naturally offers these great tips on simple conversation starters. Listen to her.

Wear something chic but comfortable. A dress is the classic choice, but this is not the 1950s. You want to be comfortable and look like the dinner was no sweat. This is easy, just make sure you slip into your outfit right before guests arrive to avoid a pre-dinner meltdown. And choose a fitted dress in soft fabric, which can be made casual with flats or dressy with heels and lots of accessories.

Cook something you’ve already mastered. This is always a good dinner party tip – never try a brand new recipe for an oh-so-important event.  You will mess it up. That is the law of the universe. If the only thing you really know how to cook is lasagna, then lasagna it is! Here’s one of my dinner party staples, easy and delicious chicken piccatta from My Recipes. They’ll think you are not only a great co-worker, but a great hostess.

Cheers to hosting a great event!
