So I had planned to write this super helpful, adorable post on where to find all the best “starting school” items for your toddler. The truth is, I’ve been a blubbering mess all week. What you’re getting instead is a sentimental, minimally helpful look at the subject, with a picture of my and Lisa’s kiddo’s going back to school today.
The blubbering on my part all week hasn’t been about working mom guilt (I’m SO excited for him to get to interact with other kids on a regular basis) or about any doubts I have about where he will be all day (so lucky to have such a wonderful school in our city). What I’m tearing up about is that the start of “school” means that this little guy on the left is moving faster towards becoming that big kid on the right.
Yes, we are still labeling diapers, shoes, socks, extra t-shirts, rain boots…sigh; packing a blankie, worrying about naptime, and all the things you do for a toddler at school – but for heavens sake, we bought a backpack and 2 pairs of big boys shoes and have a menu tacked up on our refrigerator now! He’s not a baby anymore. As I texted Lisa throughout the day to check in, I just kept asking – how are you doing this? Your little boy is starting middle school today? I can’t even imagine.
I’m sure it gets easier year by year (save milestone years like middle school and high school), and maybe by next year I can write you a savvy mom post about how to smoothly start school. But this year, I’ll just warn all the new moms out there….when the day comes, have some Kleenex around.
Oh, and stock up on Sharpies. The labeling is kind of a bitch.
