baby style

Since having my son, Ellis, I have had a blast shopping and “styling” him.  There are so many cute baby clothes and accessories out there these days.  My favorites are the pieces that look mini adult clothing.  A cardigan in the winter, a button up dress shirt onesie (you don’t have to worry about it coming un-tucked!), skinny jeans, you get the idea.  I steer clear of the cartoon characters and cheesy sayings as much as possible  (everyone knows mommy and daddy love him…no need to spell it out!).

Here are a few tips that I have picked up along the way….so far (almost 7 months):

-Accessories are adorable on babies!  You have to start early or the child will not want to wear them.  If they have worn headbands and/or hats since they were born then they do not know any different.  But, if at 6 months you decide to try it most likely they will rip it right off.  Since Ellis was born in late October I started him with little beanies.  Of course the hospital has them and I just continued with the fun hats all through the winter.  Now that it’s spring I have moved to the straw fedoras and baseball caps.  Oh my…a baby in a hat is just so cute!  Plus it helps shield their heads from the sun…which is especially helpful when they don’t have much hair like Ellis!

-Another favorite accessory are sunglasses.  Beyond cute and they help protect the eyes which is really important when they are little.  Again you have to start early!!!  Ellis does pretty well with them.  He occasionally decides they are more fun to chew on but for the most part he keeps them on.

-Legwarmers are a great way to keep babies legs warm while keeping it easy to change diapers.  They come in all sorts of patterns and colors that are adorable for both girls and boys.

-Have fun with patterns and colors.  Bust out of the typical baby colors and get bold!  Most retailers have some great colors and patterns going on.  Don’t be afraid to mix and match.  Just like multiple patterns are popular in adult clothes, they are even more fun with baby clothes.  And just because an outfit comes all nicely put together with matching pants, shorts, hat, and shoes doesn’t mean you have to wear them all at the same time…remember to mix and match just like you personally would.  Not many adults would show up matching head to toe (well, except maybe Kim Kardashian) but you get what I mean!

-Layer when possible.  It’s hard to be a fun graphic onesie with a sweater, cardigan, or vest over it.  Super cute and easy.

When it comes to shopping for Ellis I hit up the sales.  Pretty much everything I buy is on sale.  If I see something at a great price I will pick it up for later when he is bigger.  No need to pass up a $5 sweater that will be perfect for next year.  My favorite places to buy clothes are Gap, Target, and H&M (would love to have one here in Tulsa!).  Both run sales all the time and have just adorable outfits.  I mean check out these little Gap babies….

apartment decorating

I have spent my fair share of time living in apartments.  College, first married, new city, etc.  With each apartment a main goal of mine was to make it feel homey and mine.  Sometimes that can be hard because you are in an apartment that you don’t own.  You can’t rip out the kitchen and go back in with those fabulous cabinets and granite counters like you might in a house that you own.  But, there are a few easy things you can do to personalize your rented space. My sister just bought her first home and is leaving the world of apartment living soon.  I decided to snap a few photos and share with you some tips.

Most apartment complexes will allow you to paint, as long as you paint it back to the original color or pay a fee.  While I wouldn’t suggest painting every wall, I do think it is a good idea to paint a few accent walls.  It can really add depth to an open space and personalize it immediately.

Utilize beautiful curtains with color and pattern.  If you are stuck with neutral walls, then it is the perfect time to purchase some curtains that have character!  Go outside your comfort zone a little and grab those paisley curtains that you would otherwise think were too “busy”.  When all the walls are neutral the space can handle some bold patterns and bright colors.  Another tip…hang them as close to the ceiling as you can (while still having them touch the floor).  This will draw the eye up and give the illusion of taller ceilings.

KJ Apt 9 apartment decorating

Area rugs are another great way to bring color and pattern into your space.  Apartment carpet is standard, run of the mill, plain jane stuff.  So it is easy to make a big impact with a beautiful rug.

KJ Apt 7 apartment decorating

Don’t be afraid to hang photos and wall art on the walls.  You can always fill in the holes when it comes time to move out.  In my book, few things are more lonely than blank walls staring back at you.  Remember to keep in mind scale.  You either need to go big with your frames (think 16 x 20 and larger…..an 8 x 10 is tiny for a wall and should only be used in collages) or consider a collage.  Both of these options allow you to fill a wall nicely and proportionately.

At my sisters we decide to incorporate a large mirror with a series of framed travel photos.  A quick and easy tip for selecting collage frames is to stick with one finish.  You can get different sizes and styles, but stay with one finish.  That finish will tie the whole collage together.

I think it is important to use photos and items that are personal to you.  Don’t just hit up your local store for “wall art”.  Having memories hung throughout your home tell YOUR story.  And that is what is so unique about each and every home.  Maybe it is travel photos, old family photos, a vintage flea market find, or a fun souvenir from your time in Africa.  Whatever it is, put it on display so you have the joy of seeing it and sharing it with people that visit your home.

KJ Apt 6 apartment decorating

Think outside the box when it comes to furniture.  When I was first married we had a huge compilation of furniture that was handed down and left over from college.  It was always exciting when we got a new piece of furniture, or when I found a way to revamp what we already had.  Be creative.  Here my sister took old cabinet doors that she found at an estate sale, attached them to one another, and set them on top of a lower headboard (that she already had) to create a larger, unique headboard.

For her bedroom wall art she tore out pages from old magazines, accordion folded them, and hot glued them together.  This cost basically nothing and fills the wall perfectly.

Lighting can make a big impact as well.  Floor and table lamps are great additions to any room.  Here she used some hanging lamps that can be easily removed when she is ready to move.

KJ Apt 10 apartment decorating

For her old dresser she swapped out the original pulls and used new ones that she found at Anthropologie.  A simple hardware change made a huge difference!

KJ Apt 11 apartment decorating

My sister has a degree in apparel merchandising and you could say that one of her hobbies is shopping!  So, she had a huge need for closet/storage space.  The apartment she chose had a ”computer desk” area that she knew she wouldn’t need.  So instead of a computer and printer filling the space she decided to use it as her accessory closet.  A perfect place for all of her shoes, jewelry, scarves, and purses.

Instead of it being all thrown in there she took the time and had fun organizing it to fit her needs and wants.  She used the vertical space to hang her purses and scarves.  The shelves that normally would hold file folders were perfect for her many shoe boxes.  And an old door is used to display all of her necklaces.

I think my biggest tip is to make your space your own.  Whether it’s an apartment, house, or a single bedroom, make it reflect you and what you like.  Let it tell a story so that when people visit they get to see a piece of you.  Nothing will be more comfortable than coming home….even if it is an apartment!

If you haven’t had the chance, take a few minutes and flip through our Spring Issue that showcases this awesome home.  It is full of color and lots of great details.  The photo above is the main living space.  With the walls being neutral it allows all of their accessories to really shine.  The fireplace is quite a find and serves as the perfect focal point in the space.

I have pulled some colors from the space to create an energetic color palette.  This color palette could be used in home decorating or a fashionable outfit.  The bright punches of red and lime green are tamed down a bit with the pairing of a deep blue and gold.  Here are some fun pieces I found that fit within the color palette perfectly…

Easter Egg Decorating

Decorating Easter eggs is always a fun and creative project whether it’s with your children, or all by yourself.  This year we decided to try some non-traditional decorating options.

metallic eggs 300x225 Easter Egg Decorating

The scrapbooking aisle can be a great place to get supplies.  Gold, adhesive backed, letters are perfect for creating monogrammed eggs.  And metallic permanent markers can create a very sophisticated look.  Move over pastel pink!

watercolor marker eggs 300x225 Easter Egg Decorating

Watercolor paints are perfect for adding multiple colors to your eggs.  The traditional dying is great for a solid color, but gets super tricky if you want more than one color.  The water color paints are easy to use, easy to clean up, and can be as vibrant or as light as you like.  Another fun trick is to draw a design with a black permanent marker on the egg first, and then watercolor over the design.

Permanent markers allow you to create very detailed designs and they dry much quicker than paint or dye.

Also, be sure and check out my blog post from last year for some tips on how to make glitter eggs.

I will be sharing these ideas on Tulsa’s Fox 23 Great Day Green Country this morning.  Tune in for some more tips!

instagram obsessed

instagram 300x225 instagram obsessedI am officially obsessed with Instagram.  And I apologize to all of my followers for the crazy amount of photos that I post of my little boy!

With camera phones it is so easy to snap day-to-day photos, and now Instagram makes it easy to give them a cool look.  You don’t have to worry about uploading your photos to your computer and then editing them in a separate program.  Don’t get me wrong, I still use my big camera a lot, but I do love the simple snap shots as well.

While I love thumbing through the photos on my phone I would like to get some printed so I can see them more regularly in my home.  Surprisingly there are some really neat companies out there that specialize in printing Instagram photos.  Here are a few that I can’t wait to try out….

Printstagram – They will print your photos in so many different ways.   You can do little mini books, 2″x2″ prints, prints that look like polaroids, and even a large poster that has up to 400 of your photos on it.  I love the prints that look like polaroids – may have to start there with my pics.

PostaGram – This is an app you can download to your phone that allows you to send your Instagram photos as postcards, for only $1!  How cool is that?  Forget $6.99 greeting cards (yes…$6.99….crazy right?), now you can send one of your unique photos to brighten someone’s day.  And you can do it all from your phone.  No need to even log onto a computer.

ImageSnap – This company prints your Instagram photos onto ceramic tiles!  They come in sizes ranging from 2″x2″ up to 12″x12″.  The 2″x2″ size comes with a magnet you can put on the back….which I think would perfect for pics you want to display on your refrigerator.  Or how about one of the larger sizes used as coasters?  Attach a piece of cork or felt to the back and you would have a super cute, custom gift ready to go.

Hopefully these will help you find some fun ways to display your photos.  Be sure and follow Prairie Hive on Instagram.  You can catch sneak peeks of magazines and behind the scene stuff.  And in the near future we may have a fun Instagram project for you all to participate in!

Where do I put that huge TV? Design Issues – Ask Us!

One of our readers, Carrie, wrote to us with a design question that we felt everyone could probably relate to:

“OK, husband is buying a enormous TV.  I would love to see some ideas of how to make it blend into a room.  Ughh, it seems like it will be an eyesore.”

We all have this problem!  What to do with those obnoxiously huge televisions that we all seem to upgrade to?  Sure, they are nice and thin.  But they can still be a huge black rectangle in the center of our living rooms.

There is always the option of a piece of furniture that the TV can sit inside.  That way when you want to watch you simply open the doors, but you also have the ability to close the doors and hide the huge black box.  If you can’t find a piece of furniture that is just right…or big enough you can have one custom made to fit your exact TV.

Sometimes a piece of furniture doesn’t fit the space so you have to work with it being exposed.  For this option one of my favorites is incorporating the TV into a collage wall.  By doing this, you take the focus off the TV its self and make it more about the grouping.  Here are some great photo examples…

A few tips when working with a collage wall…

1.  SCALE:  You want to make sure that the collage is proportionate to the size of the wall it is going on.  And take into consideration the size of your TV.  If it is large you don’t want all the other collage pieces to be small (remember, even an 8 by 10 photo looks small on a large wall).  You will need to think big.  If you do have small items that you want to incorporate, be sure and group them together so that visually they hold more weight.

If your TV is going to sit on a piece of furniture, the furniture should be wider than the width of the TV.  You don’t want a large TV sitting on something that is small.  And most of the time it is best if the furniture is enclosed on the bottom so that it is grounded…you don’t want it to be visually top heavy with your big black TV.

2.  SPACING:  The items should all be close together so that they create one large focal point.  Make the spacing in between each individual piece the same.

3.  STYLE:  As you can see from the photos above, a collage wall can take on many different styles.  Some are more abstract (many different frames, a combination of drawings/photos/collectibles/etc.) while others are more architectural (same frames, all black & white/monochromatic/grid arrangement/etc.).  Choose an arrangement that fits your decorating style the best.

4.  MAKE IT CLEAN:  Make sure and hide those electrical cords!  If you decide to hang the TV on the wall, go the the extra expense of having the cords ran inside the wall so that they are hidden.  There is nothing worse than having a TV on the wall with black cords coming out the bottom.  If that is what you are going to do, then you are better off having the T.V. sit on a piece of furniture!

Another option for incorporating a large TV is to place a piece of furniture under it and then flank either side of it with bookcases or display cases.  This way it is surrounded by larger pieces and isn’t the only thing on the wall.  Here are a couple of examples:

Ahhh…..fall is oh, so close.  Can you feel it?  Smell it?  See it?  Well I can (perhaps it’s because I am wishing it here so hard!).  And because of that, it is time to spruce up your home and wardrobe with some fall colors!

Here at Prairie Hive we all love color.  Not in a small way, but a big way.  We are always excited to see what is up and coming.  One of the best ways to get ahead on the color each year is through the company Pantone.  Each year they are responsible for the yearly color….remember my post on Tangerine Tango back in January?  Well, in addition to the yearly color, they also have spring and fall color collections.  The fall color collection is pictured above.

I really love it.  The jewel tones are in full force with some brights that carry our neon loving ways from summer into fall.

Here are some fun items I found that can help you incorporate some of the great fall colors into your life….

Owl & Drum is a brand new fabric store that just opened up here in Tulsa.  We are sooo very excited to have them here b/c they have got some great product!  This is not your grandma’s quilting shop.  They have super hip fabric, fun ribbon, handmade items from all over the states, and even some unique jewelry the uses old skateboards!

Fabric is a great way to incorporate fun colors and patterns.  You can easily make throw pillow covers, cover a lamp shade, make a quick table runner, the list is endless!  Here are just a couple options that showcase the great fall colors….

MADE:  The Indie Emporium Shop is one of the pop up shops from last year that now has a permanent location in downtown Tulsa.  And boy are we glad that they do!  It is full of handmade goodness from many different artists.  From knitted scarves, clever baby onesies, to jewelry you are sure to find something unique that you love.

Scarves are one of the easiest ways to freshen up your wardrobe.  They take a simple t-shirt and jeans to a whole new level plus they keep you warm in the chilly weather.

One of my favorite picks for fall at MADE is their glitter acorn necklaces.  The bottoms are dipped in glitter paint…all of which fall perfectly in line with this seasons colors.  And it’s an acorn, so you get double points!

How about some color in the kitchen?  You can easily amp up your fall entertaining by adding some fun salad and appetizer plates to a simple white collection.  Target now has the Curiosity Shoppe that has great novelty pieces in the perfect colors.

You can also spruce up your kitchen with some new kitchen towels.

And finally, I think one of the easiest ways to bring color into your wardrobe is with jewelry.  And what girl doesn’t like jewelry?

Noonday Collection is a new company to the Tulsa area that has a fabulous selection of jewelry, home and gift items, and accessories.  The great part about the company is that all of the items are made by fair trade artisans around the world.  So you are getting great, unique items that have a great story behind them as well.

Here are a few pieces of jewelry that I think would be perfect for your fall collection…

Those pieces are just the tip of the iceberg as to what Noonday Collection has to offer.  You can see other favorites from the Prairie Hive girls on our Pinterest PH-Fashion board.

And, TONIGHT Prairie Hive is hosting their first Goods & Goodies event.  It will be held at the brand new Antoinette Baking Co. on Brookside (right next to the Purple Glaze) from 6-9pm.  You can sample some of their yummy goodies and see Noonday’s Fall Collection, which I promise you won’t be disappointed in!  What’s better than some Goods & Goodies?

Hope to see you tonight!

Pinterest Beauty Party

My addiction to Pinterest started with all of the great ideas for fashion, home interiors, and recipes.  But it has grown into blissful organizational ideas, cleaning tips that I “should” use, and beauty tips.

I think it would be great fun to have a Pinterest Beauty Party {PBP…I think that has a nice ring!}.  Each person brings the items needed for one beauty tip or trick and everyone gets to try them out.  Then you can decide if it’s legit or a flop….because you know there will be both!

Here are some of the ones I would like to try….

Nursery Rockers & Gliders

With a new addition coming to the Benefield household, around the first of November, things have been a little crazy.  I have been trying to figure out where to put the new bundle of joy as well as trying to figure out what items are necessary when he gets here.  What I have determined is that there is a gadget for literally every function.  Don’t believe me?  Check this out….

snot sucker Nursery Rockers & Gliders

Yes, you read correctly.  It is a snotsucker.  As in one end goes in the babies nose and the other end goes in the mom’s mouth.  Now I realize that there is some sort of barrier, but no thanks.

You see the dilemma I am up against?  Determining what is useful and a must have verses items that will just take up valuable space.

One must have item for me is the nursery rocker/glider.  I need something where I can sit comfortably and rock/glide while feeding, putting to sleep, or catching a nap.  There are a multitude of different rockers and gliders out there, but I quickly realized that they were either more than I wanted to spend, too big, or just plain ugly.  And I would definitely say that the majority are just plain ugly!  While searching I saved lots of options and thought it might be helpful to other soon to be mom’s to see what is out there.

Here are some that I found that look great and hit just about any price point.  We will start with the high rollers….

PB Wingback Rocker 300x264 Nursery Rockers & GlidersPB Wingback Chair 300x264 Nursery Rockers & Gliders

image via Pottery Barn

Pottery Barn Kids Wingback Rocker $1,099 – Love the look of this rocker.  And the great thing is that after the little grows you can eventually replace the rocker on the bottom with regular chair legs.  A great option especially when you are spending a lot….it grows with the needs of your family!

LON Luca Glider 300x300 Nursery Rockers & Gliders

image via Land of Nod

Land of Nod’s Luca Glider $995 – Be still my heart.  Could possibly be my favorite!  A great modern look for a modern nursery.  If orange isn’t your color, there are more neutral ones available.  But man!  What a great statement this one makes!

LON Joya Rocker 300x300 Nursery Rockers & Gliders

image via Land of Nod

Land of Nod’s Joya Rocker $995 – Another great modern find.  Love the wood rocker base.  This is one of those chairs that even after the little one grows up it would look great in a corner of a living room or reading nook.  Who doesn’t like to rock while reading?

WM Nurseryworks Empire Rocker Nursery Rockers & Gliders

image via Wal-Mart

Wal-Mart Nurseryworks Empire Rocker $799.98 – Yep, Wal-Mart!  Well, online anyways.  Isn’t this a unique look?  Love the tall back, wings, and button tufting.  A definite statement piece!

BRU Newco Premium Hudson Glider Nursery Rockers & Gliders

image via Babies R Us

Babies R Us Newco Premium Hudson Glider $549.99 – Looks like a normal chair.  The glider mechanisms are hidden giving a very clean look, but the bonus of gliding.  Available in other colors.  I really like the contrasting piping.

WM Enchanted Coronado Rocker Nursery Rockers & Gliders

image via Wal-Mart

Wal-Mart Enchanted Coronado Glider $372 – Same clean look as the previous glider, but a little bit more squared off.  Very simple  lines.  And that price isn’t too shabby!!!

WM Dorel Rocking Chair Nursery Rockers & Gliders

image via Wal-Mart

Wal-Mart Dorel Nursery Rocking Chair $169.88 – Check that out!  What a great looking chair for a great price.  You do have to purchase a slip cover, color options are shown.  They run around $60.  I strongly considered this one but it was a little larger than what I had room for (I’m telling you…..I’m tight on space!).  Simple, clean lines.  No poofy-ness or anything.  Way to go Wal-Mart!

poang chair 300x300 Nursery Rockers & Gliders

image via IKEA

IKEA’s Poang Chair $99 – The Poang chair (also available with a rocker base) is a great chair at a very reasonable price.  The chair is designed to gently bounce.  It is available with different frame colors and many different cushion colors and designs.  It’s not too large, but with the tall back it is easy for tall mom’s and dad’s to rest their weary heads.

This is the one I ended up going with and so far I am very happy with it!  Because my nursery is small I didn’t want the chair to take up too much room.  I like how the Poang chair has the open bottom and arms making it feel less bulky.  So, if you are like me and are on a tight budget and space, this one might be the one for you!

For all you other mom’s out there, please let me live vicariously through you…go with one of those awesome looking rockers or gliders and then send me a pic so I can drool.

Oh, and don’t forget, you can always have a chair reupholstered.  So if you have a family hand-me-down that you want to use, think about giving it a face lift.  This can be a really great option because you can get very specific about the fabric color and pattern.

Good Luck!

Sights & Tastes of London

A couple of years ago my husband and I, along with another couple, took a summer vacation to London, Paris, and Rome.  With all of the Olympics on TV it makes me think of the fun we had while in London.  So, I thought I might share with you some of the sights & tastes that we experienced while there.  Maybe it will inspire you to plan a trip across the pond!

Another must is Bath, England.  Again, just a short distance but such a beautiful little town.  It almost has an Italian feel to it.  One of the most interesting sites was the Roman Baths that are located there.  It’s now a museum and extremely interesting.  Just don’t touch the water!

stonehenge Sights & Tastes of London

Stonehenge.  Not far and definitely worth seeing.  There’s nothing else out there, just the big rocks.  But they are BIG!  And it really does make you wonder how they got that way…and quite amazing that they are still there.  A great piece of history to rest your eyes on.

Now onto the tastes….

st. john2 Sights & Tastes of London

St. John was a restaurant that is listed on Anthony Bourdain’s 13 Places to Eat Before You Die list.  So, we figured we had better try it out.  This is a “nose to tail” restaurant….nothing goes to waste here.  So you can imagine the interesting menu items.  I stuck with the fish and it was delish!

The real kicker is the dish that Anthony Bourdain says would be his “death row” meal……Roasted Bone Marrow.  Yup, you read correctly…..and we tried it.  The guys had to get it simply based on the recommendation.  I could have skipped it, BUT I didn’t want to be shown up.  So I tasted it.  Definitely not my favorite, but it wasn’t horrible.  You actually spread it on bread to eat it.  My “spread” was on the light side I must admit!

All through London you will find pub after pub after pub.  They all have pretty similar menu items with these next two being high on their lists.  Shepherds Pie and Fish and Chips.  Both were great!  Oh, and you will find lots of peas and mushy peas around.

Add a little kick with Colman’s Mustard.  Do not be fooled…it is not like american mustard!

And finally we decided to try something completely random.  Pasha is a turkish restaurant.  And it was fabulous!  The food was great, but the atmosphere was outstanding!  Complete with belly dancers even!

It would be worth just stopping by for a fabulous drink if you don’t have time for a full meal.

So, while you enjoy watching the Olympics take note of all the different attractions and locations.  That way when you visit you can see them all in person.

London was a great city to visit.  It would especially be good for someone who has never been out of the United States.  Everyone was very friendly and welcoming.  My personal take is that it feels like a big US city with a whole lot of history and people that have great accents!
