Fall Boots Roundup

Tattered Feather

Although fall arrived weeks ago, it just now seems like boot weather here in Tulsa.  The weather has been beautiful, but warm!  But suddenly the last few mornings it has been chilly and so its time to dust off the ‘ol boots (and maybe shop around just a little for a new pair).

I know many have had their fall outfits worked out for months, but I’ve been struggling to part with my flip flops!  But with the leaves changing and the temperatures dropping, I’m suddenly inspired to look for fall inspiration.

I love this picture I found – cute outfit – cute door.  It launched me into a huge search and deliberation over my fall footwear needs.  After looking at boots for hours, this is a quick round-up of my favorites.  I thought about lining out the trends and great finds for each, but you’ve all seen that.  So instead, I just included my favorites.  They’re all pretty basic and simple, but that’s what I love.  And while I was at it, I shopped for my family, so for kicks I included something for my kiddos and my husband, too…

Spools and Spools

What I Wore

Lately it seems I’ve seen spools every time I turn around!  There are a million brilliant ways to use spools as decor.  Such a unique way to incorporate color and in some cases a little bit of vintage interest.

LWspoolstonis Spools and Spools

I was in Toni’s Flowers the other day and spotted these fantastic resin vases.

LWspoolswisteria Spools and Spools

And I was flipping through Wisteria and saw these cute little spools of twine.  Use the twine and repurpose the spools as decoration.

And should you need the product that is actually on the spool, this is such a great way to organize and display it.  Otherwise, it makes such a unique work of art!

Witch Hats: Crafty Decor for Halloween

LWwitchhatwizard Witch Hats: Crafty Decor for Halloween

Halloween is almost here!  It’s time to decorate and plan those costumes.  Witches hats seem to be everywhere, so here are a few options to decorate your head or maybe your table.

LWwitchhattonis Witch Hats: Crafty Decor for Halloween

I found this adorable hat at Toni’s Flowers and Gifts- pre-made, ready to go and cute as can be!

LWwitchhatblack Witch Hats: Crafty Decor for Halloween

Or, if you want to put a LITTLE effort into crafting your own hat, this plain black hat (from Party City) is embellished with mesh ribbon and a feather clip (from Hobby Lobby).  Easy, inexpensive, but personalized to your taste and needs.

LWwitchhatfeathers Witch Hats: Crafty Decor for Halloween

And finally, this hat is completely from scratch.  It’s made from a cardboard cone (cut a half-circle and shape into a cone and staple).   I brushed on glue with a paintbrush and then sprinkled on glitter.  A round cardboard circle (I traced our trashcan lid) is glued to the bottom and then covered in feathers.

To make the hat in the first picture, I made the same cone and then traced a shape to make a cardboard border that I glued to the bottom of the hat and then glittered.  So easy!  Making them yourself is such a fun way to personalize your Halloween decor.  Use any combination of colors and materials and let your kids help!  They’ll love it!

Happy Halloween!!

Party Time!

LWsimonscupcakes Party Time!

And so last weekend it was time for yet another birthday at our house.   Our little guy was turning 5!  And as it seems to go for the poor third child, he had never had a real birthday party.  So this was the year.  And we decided to have a big backyard birthday party like we used to do before, well, before we had three kids!  We love having our kids’ friends AND their families over, so we were excited to do it again.  It’s such a good opportunity to see friends we don’t get to see as much as we’d like and it’s a great way to meet our kids’ new friends and parents.  So as it goes, our party of a few of his closest friends and family turned into a party of 50!

I’m not complaining – it was great fun.  But the elaborate party set-up I envisioned had to be edited a little bit as there were many other things to get done.  Luckily, the entertainment was taken care of.  He really wanted a “bouncy house” (that’s what he calls large inflatables), so between that and just playing in the backyard, the kids were pooped by the end.

Instead of trying to come up with a birthday party theme, I decided to just go with “birthday” as inspiration for my set-up.  I wanted to make everyone a party hat, but as my time became limited, I decided to just make hats as a centerpiece and use hats from the store for the kids.

LWsimonspartyhatcopy Party Time!

All of my hats turned out differently.  I just decided to try a different design on each one.  The hat above though, was my favorite.  To get started, I made a cone out of a half-circle cut out of cardboard.  I did not do any precise measuring, so it took a little tweaking until it was the size I wanted and it was even.  To make the cone, just roll up the half circle until it’s the size you want at the bottom and then attach (I stapled mine).   To make the tissue pom pom on the top, I cut tissue at a few different lengths and stapled them to the inside where the cone would come together.  For the outside, I glued craft paper onto the cardboard and then for kicks I glittered around the lines.  I figure a little glitter can never hurt!  At the bottom, I glued three different layers of tissue around the inside starting with the shortest pieces and then finishing with a layer of the longest pieces, alternating colors on each layer.

LWsimonspartyplate Party Time!

Because I was just using plain pre-made hats that I found at Party City, I decided to embellish them a little by glueing pom pons (from Hobby Lobby) to the top.  The extra pom pons were scattered around the table for color and interest and the kids loved playing with them.  The fabric for the table cloth came from one of my favorite new stores in Tulsa, Owl and Drum.  They have a fantastic selection of fabrics, crafts and hand-made gifts!  The fun orange napkins came from The Inviting Place and the plates are from Target.

LWsimonspartytablecopy Party Time!

And finally, each child took home a little bag with orange and blue rock candy that I found at Sweet Tooth.  Almost every kid loves rock candy and it comes in so many fun colors – such an easy way to tie in your party colors AND send home something they’ll like!

Overall it was a fun party!  The set-up was easy, but it was fun and festive – just what it needed to be.  Because really, five year olds don’t care about the decorations and although it’s fun to make it look great for your guests, there’s still food to cook and a house to clean, so it’s got to be realistic!

Happy Partying!

Fire pit Follow-up!

LWfirepitfinished Fire pit Follow up!

Earlier this summer I did a little round-up of inspiring outdoor fire pits and included a picture of the beginning of our own in our backyard.  It looked like this…

LWfirepitbefore Fire pit Follow up!

Lovely, I know.  So after some debate as to how we wanted to finish it, we came up with a plan.

1) We decided we wanted a metal ring in the center and 2) it would probably be better if we handed off the patio part of the project to a professional.

LWfirepitmetalring Fire pit Follow up!

For the metal ring, we went to Garden Deva.  We wanted it to be simple and rustic, but with a little bit of interest.  They hand notched the edge for us, leaving a great place to rest our roasting sticks!  The ring is 54 inches in diameter and 24 inches high.  6 inches of the ring is in the ground, so the base of the fire pit is lower than ground level.

Initially we liked the idea of the patio around the ring being a little bit uneven and rustic, but the more we walked on it, the more we realized it would be much safer to have an even surface.  We used the stones that we did because we happened to have them left over from a previous project.  It was nice to turn that pile of pavers into something more fun!  To help us put it all in place we called on local landscape designer, Chris Moore.  Now it is level, drains appropriately and will last!  We made the patio area just big enough that chairs will fit on it and be comfortable with a smaller fire.  And for a bigger fire, the ground is level enough beyond the pavers to pull chairs out into the grass.

Since the project has been completed, the burn ban has only been lifted for about a week here in Tulsa, so we haven’t been able to use it much.  But it seems fall is finally here, so I’m sure we’ll make up for lost time!

Happy fall!

Pumpkins and Gourds!

LWgourds Pumpkins and Gourds!

Never mind that it was over 90 degrees yesterday in Tulsa, fall is officially here!  So it’s time to bring out the pumpkins and the mums.  Time to light the fall candles and bake pumpkin bread.  At least that’s what I did!  I’m ready for that crisp weather and falling leaves.  The forecast says we may have to wait just a little while longer for that, but in the meantime I can make it look like fall everywhere else!

LWpumpkinswhite Pumpkins and Gourds!

As I was driving through town, I saw all of these beautiful pumpkins piled up at one of my favorite stores, Ted and Debbie’s.  I love all of the different colors and shapes.  We’ll buy pumpkins for carving Jack O’ Lanterns later, but for fall I love to stack up a mix of the colorful pumpkins and gourds on my porch.  They’re interesting, they last a long time and they look great through Thanksgiving.

LWpumpkintopiary1 Pumpkins and Gourds!

So this is it.  This is all I do – stack my favorite pumpkins one on top of the other.  No tools or other materials necessary.  I pull the summer plants out of the planters, stack the pumpkins and set the mums right next to them.  It has to be that easy or I would do nothing.  We would probably just have planters full of dead plants.  For those of us with limited time, the easy pumpkin topiary is a great way to add fall charm to the front porch.  Personally, I love the simplicity and the fact that it’s a little imperfect.

And…one more thing I thought I would include since it’s time to bake all things pumpkin!  My mom’s pumpkin bread recipe.  I made some last night and I would have included a picture, but it’s already gone!  But trust me, it’s good, so here you go…

Pumpkin Bread

3 1/3 cups flour

3 cups sugar

1 1/2 tsp salt

2 tsp baking soda

1 tsp cinamon

1 tsp nutmeg

2/3 cup water

1 cup oil

4 eggs

1 16 oz. can pumpkin

1.   Mix all dry ingredients in a bowl.  2.  Make a hole in the middle and add the water, oil and eggs – mix well.  3.  Add pumpkin and mix well.  4.  Divide into 3 loaf pans and bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour.

Fashion’s Night Out – Tulsa!

LWFNOlogo Fashions Night Out Tulsa!

Thursday marks the second annual Fashion’s Night Out in Tulsa.  Along with more than 250 other cities in the United States and 18 countries around the world, Tulsa will celebrate the world of fashion with special events planned during the day, and retailers will stay open late in the evening with events of their own.

The event began in New York City in 2009 during the economic downturn, and was conceived to encourage consumers to support the fashion industry.  It was intended to bring the fashion community together and to create excitement around fashion in a community-style shopping event.  In the past three years it has done just that, and Tulsans joined the  celebration last year.

This year’s event kicks off at the Mayo Hotel at 10 a.m. with a fashion show, lunch and special guest keynote speaker, fashion designer and entrepreneur, Liz Lange.  The daytime event also includes a design competition between two design schools and will reveal of the finalists in the transformation contest.  Tickets are still available.  Check the Fashions’ Night Out website for details.

The celebration continues throughout the afternoon and evening at over 40 retailers in Utica Square, Cherry Street and Brookside.  Most participating stores have specific events beginning at 4 or 5 p.m. lasting until 8 or 9 p.m.   These event include fashion shows, trunk shows, entertainment, style consults and door prizes.  And many retailers will be donating a portion of the evening’s proceeds to charity.  So do you need any more reasons to go shopping?  It’s guaranteed to be an exciting evening of fall fashion, so grab your best shopping buddy and hit the town.

Does all of that shopping sound exhausting?  Not to worry!  Jackie Cooper Imports, Moody’s Jewelry and Clary Sage are sponsoring a trolly to provide transportation from one shopping designation to the next.   Three stops in Utica Square, two on Brookside and one stop on Cherry Street will drop you right where you want to be and pick you up when it’s time to move on.  So put that gas money you save to good use and visit the fantastic retailers that have events planned and great new fall fashion to show off.

The current issue of Tulsa People (available at stores and restaurants around town) has a complete listing of stores participating in Fashion’s Night Out, but here are a few to help you start planning…

Fall Decor – Football Season!

LWwreathondoor Fall Decor Football Season!

I’m pretty sure I don’t know anyone in Oklahoma who doesn’t love college football.  The second the kids are back in school it seems everyone is ready to break out their favorite team’s gear and decor.  We’re big University of Oklahoma fans at our house, and every year I like to put something out front to show our team spirit.  But I don’t like to get too out of control – just a little something.  (And now that I’ve painted our front door Texas orange – I definitely have to hang something red!)

I’d been thinking about what I could look for – or make – and I ran across this rope at Lowe’s.  Red and White – perfect!  And since rope is such a big trend right now, I thought it would be a fun, modern way to spruce up a wreath and give it a little Sooner spirit.  And for those of you who are not OU fans – no worries- Lowe’s had MANY colors, textures and sizes of rope, as I’m sure other hardware stores do too.

LWwreathmaterials Fall Decor Football Season!

I started with a plain straw wreath from the craft store.  It was only $4.99 and if you’re more diligent that I, you can use your Hobby Lobby coupon straight from your smart phone and get it 40% off!  The polyester rope is from Lowe’s.  I stood there forever trying to decide which combination to use and I finally picked the red and white and I used the plain red for accent and to hang it on the door.

LWwreathwrapping Fall Decor Football Season!

Making the wreath was really as simple as wrapping the rope around until I’d covered the whole wreath.  So easy!  I left a long piece at the beginning so I could just tuck it in the back – I didn’t even use glue.  I left the plastic wrapper on the wreath to make it easier to slide the rope where it needed adjusting.  Altogether, the project took about 125 feet of rope and each package was about $6.

LWwreathpennant Fall Decor Football Season!

For a little extra embellishment, I added the paper pennant.  I used paper because it was inexpensive and easy, but of course fabric or felt would be cute, too.  I just cute the shape of a pennant and I used a Cricut to cut the letters; although it would be just as easy to freehand them or use a stencil and cut them out.

I glued the whole thing to a piece of floral wire which made it very easy to stick into the straw wreath and it kept it secure.  It also makes it easy to change up your wreath should you decide to root for another team or use it for Christmas!

Altogether, it only took me about an hour to make, and I ended up with a great new door decoration! A fresh twist on the traditional door wreath.  Of course there are so many different materials you can use to customize yours to your own taste, decor, etc., the sky’s the limit!  So have fun and…

It’s hard to believe it, but here in Oklahoma, it’s time for the kiddos to go back to school!  Every year it seems like we’ve just gotten into the swing of things for summer when it’s time to start buying school supplies and new shoes.  For my family (well for me anyway), new and inspiring gear seems to help make the transition back to school a little bit more fun ; so here are a few great products and ideas that might help you and your favorite students get up and at ‘em for those early mornings and busy afternoons…

Back To School – Set the Table!

LWBTSsupplies Back To School Set the Table!

Every year before school starts, I love to have a special back-to-school dinner.  It’s a fun way to celebrate the end of the summer, reflect on what we did during our months together and get excited about the upcoming year.  One year older, one grade higher, new teachers, seeing old friends, making new ones…the beginning of the school year is very exciting!

Every year I also love buying the kids new school supplies so that they can start fresh at home and be ready to tackle the homework and projects that come their way.  And I sometimes surprise them with new backpacks and lunch pails, so using all of those things to set the table is a great way to display their new treats and make the meal festive!

LWBTSplacemat Back To School Set the Table!

First, I used foam board from Target as the placemats.  It actually makes a decent chalkboard, so I wrapped up some chalk for the kids to doodle with!  The napkin rings are rolls of decorative paper tape also from Target and the pencil cups are tin cans (I think they had pineapple in them before!) wrapped in wrapping paper.  The pencil cups are so easy and a fun way to add color to your child’s room decor.  In this photo, the milk is in a glass with a fun striped paper straw (available at The Sweet Tooth), but on the show I had milk cartons with the straws.  They were cute and added a fun “school cafeteria” touch!

LWBTSpencilcup Back To School Set the Table!

I used the same wrapping paper as a table runner.  Wrapping paper is such an easy and inexpensive way to add interest and color to any casual table setting.

LWBTSjarscloseup Back To School Set the Table!

To display the school supplies, I just printed on scrapbook paper and wrapped it around each jar.  I already had the jars and of course school supplies are readily available everywhere!

Check out my segment on Great Day Green Country this morning, I also had some great backpacks!  They are by Sugar Booger and they’re available at the Lolly Garden here in Tulsa.  They are SO CUTE!

Good luck getting ready for Back To School!  Have a great year!
