Prairie Hive Magazine, Issue Six – Celebrating Summer!

I6Cover400px Prairie Hive Magazine, Issue Six Celebrating Summer!

Our Summer Issue is here!  Join us as we visit Tulsa’s Reservoir Hill neighborhood and chat with this oh-so-fun homeowner about how their home “found” them.  Inspired by the architecture and the family’s Mexican art collection, our team then put together a color-saturated, casual fiesta on the patio, complete with a margarita bar and hand-punched tin lanterns.  We hope you love it as much as we did!

Enjoy!

PHOTOS group car2 Ask Us April Your design questions answered by the Hive

We’ve loved hearing from you in the great comments you leave on our blogs and in our inbox, so we decided to try something new this month. You’ve asked so many great questions about design, style, photography and our favorite things, that we decided to open the forum up for even more discussion.

So, welcome to Ask Us April!

You ask the questions, and one of the six diverse women that make up Prairie Hive will answer right here! Our backgrounds range from interior design and photography, to party planning and home renovations.

You aren’t the only ones who get stumped — we have lively discussions about our own home project dilemmas all the time!

Want to know what color to paint that old desk or bureau? Ask the Hive, and we’ll help you decide between mellow yellow or cool aqua.

Wish there was a better way to round up all those toys in the living room?  Supermom Lisa can help wrangle that mess.

Need a spring mantle makeover on the cheap?  Dawn has wallet friendly ways to spruce up your space.

Do you love that cool living room you saw on Gossip Girl? Alayna’s “TV to Reality” series can be personalized to your favorite show!

Get the idea?

Your questions will inspire other readers — and us — to get motivated and make those dream projects become a reality.

E-mail us with your design questions to contact@prairiehive.com, and we’ll pick a few to answer each week.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Indie Emporium 2011

SVIndie 613x1024 Indie Emporium 2011

This year, we teamed up with Indie Emporium to help sponsor and participate in one of the largest Craft Shows in the area!  In addition to tons of handmade goods to shop from, the event also featured the first ever Iron Craft competition (think Iron Chef, but with crafty “ingredients”), which we competed in against the Make:Tulsa team.  It was a ton of fun…we were given a table of random craft supplies and a “mystery ingredient” – in our case, a t-shirt – and about 10 minutes to make something.  Needless to say, we were a bit nervous going against the Make: Tulsa group…we know several members and these are some super crafters for sure!  Considering that not all of our Hive girls (myself included) really consider crafting our forte, we thought we would be carrying a major handicap.  Once the t-shirt came out and we went into super speed mode, we somehow managed to pull it out and take home the (oh-so-cute) trophy!  I wish we had gotten an action shot in…ribbons were flying, glue guns were out…I even made a 1 minute mark attempt at adding a bracelet to our necklace, but failed miserably (hot-glued buttons…really?).  In the end, the t-shirt strip necklace, accented with some attractive poms, lace and ribbon, won us the prize (as Alayna is modeling below).

We (and by “we” I mean “Roxanne”) also ran the Make & Take…a booth where shoppers or kids could take a break and do a quick crafting lesson.  Roxanne pulled together a great idea from Saori weaving and taught us all to use leftover yarn, ribbons and fabric to make swatches that can be used by themselves (as coasters, trivets, etc.) or integrated with more fabric as a bag, pillow, etc.  The rest of the team even jumped into to make our own…it was fun and quite relaxing – we got in lots of good chatting time over a few hours!

And of course, we fit in some shopping…we saw some old friends AND I found some amazing new vendors that I can’t wait to feature in some upcoming posts and maybe even in Issue Four!

Loved these cute decorations…SOMEBODY made it to Target early enough for an umbrella!

Congrats to Christine and the whole team that put this event together…it was the best one yet, and we loved being a part of it.  Looking forward to next year!

(And…Thanks to Dawn for all these great pics!)

Issue Three!

PH3pg1 Issue Three!

Issue Three is out, and we couldn’t be more excited.  We absolutely loved the couple we worked with on this one…they were completely laid back and let us invade their home not once, but TWICE – to shoot the “Celebrate” feature there as well as photograph their home.  We even used their fireplace for this month’s Design Sting…triple whammy!

The country cool vibe of this family and their home are perfect for fall, with the mix of warm and bright colors and fantastic views.  Thanks again to the Lupps for all your patience, hospitality and a great attitude!

Watch the blog all week for expanded information from the magazine…recipes, crafts, behind the scenes info and more, AND check us out this Wednesday morning when we guest on K.C.’s show “Great Day, Green Country” at 10am on Fox23 to talk more about the fall issue!

Thanks for reading!

Come out Friday night and the first 50 guests get a swag bag filled with goodies from vendors and sponsors (like us!)!  Shoppers get a first pass at wares from both the vendors and the art gallery, start the bidding on silent auction items benefitting the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma, and just enjoy the scene!

The event continues Saturday from 12-8pm, with live music, craft demos and the continuation of the silent auction.  Stick around til 7pm and catch a fashion show featuring original designs from the vendors.

Between 12-4pm, come say hi to us – we will be running the Make & Take with a super cute and easy project you can do at the show or continue at home! We would love to meet you guys!

Here are a few pics of past shows, just to get you in the mood and give you a sneak peek at some of the goods you might see again at this year’s show!  For more information, please visit the Indie Emporium website!

Tulsa City Guide featured on Design*Sponge

D*SCity Guide Tulsa City Guide featured on Design*Sponge

We are beyond thrilled to have our Tulsa City Guide featured on one of our all time favorite blogs, Design*Sponge, today!  For all of our locals, we would love your support and hope that you will add some of your faves in the comments section!  To keep it at a somewhat reasonable length (I think it’s still EXTRA long, though!) we couldn’t include every place we love…but we know that there are so many great things to do and see (and eat) in our city!  For all of our non-local readers, we hope you will enjoy it and learn a little bit more about where we come from.  All of our Prairie Hive ladies are long time (or lifetime) Tulsans…even those of us who have moved away for a time have ended up back in our hometown.  It’s a great place to live and we hope our love for it shows through in what we wrote.

Thanks to Dawn and Alayna for the great pics we were able to add in…

Enjoy!

Sponsor Shoutout!

SVmacaron Sponsor Shoutout!

We just wanted to give a quick shoutout today to one of our new sponsors, Flora Bakery.  Flora provided the gorgeous and delicious macarons for our Issue Two party and they have maybe become our new favorite dessert.  Flora’s owner, Molly, studied the fine art of French Macarons and now sells a huge variety of flavors, as well as running an Ice Cream Club that we also can’t wait to take part in!  Click on her ad above to visit her website and learn more about her delicious treats!

Our Travel Finds

Inspired by Heather and Todd’s use of all the treasures they have found on their travels, we told you a bit in Issue Two about something we have each found along the way.  We decided to show and tell a little bit more!

ABtravel Our Travel Finds

My find is a canvas painting purchased along the Seine River while in Paris.  Every time I look at it, it takes me back to that time and setting, and all the memories.     – Alayna

DTTravel Our Travel Finds

DTSandler Our Travel Finds

Here are a few pieces I have picked up…colorful bracelets from St. Thomas and a couple of silver pieces from Mont St. Michel, France.  I also seem to randomly run into celebrities…here’s a pic of me, my cousin Jill and Adam Sandler. We ran into him in a lobby of a movie theater at midnight in Ft. Lauderdale a few years ago. (Note my crazy fan eyes!)         – Dawn

LWplate Our Travel Finds

The plate is by Paola Navone for merci -  a very cool store in Paris!  I chose it because of the 5 (for my family of 5,  of course!)  and because it was easy to bring home.  -Lisa
KAdancer Our Travel Finds
I bought these two Edgar Degas prints on my first trip abroad in 1992 at the Louvre in Paris. Even though the real paintings don’t hang in that museum, Degas was always my favorite and I bought both for a few francs. I love that both are paintings of dancers behind the scenes, stretching and warming up.  I finally saw some Degas paintings “live” in New York City at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2005.   – Kim
SVjapanbowl Our Travel Finds
I found this hand painted porcelain bowl while visiting a dear friend living in Okinawa, Japan.  I don’t remember what the lettering means now, but the beautiful colors and birds in flight sit on my dining table and remind me each day not only of a fantastic trip, but of my friend.  -Sarah
We would love to see some of your favorite travel finds!  Post them to our Facebook wall or comment here!
