drive-in inspiration: the outsiders

We all love a summer movie night — especially at the drive-in. The best example of how much we REALLY love a good summer movie in Tulsa is the ultimate drive-in flick, “The Outsiders.” Filmed in Tulsa by Francis Ford Coppola in the 1980s, it not only features a bevy of  before-they-were-stars moments, but it was shot at one of Tulsa’s most famous pop culture icons, the Admiral Twin Drive-In.

After a nasty fire a few summers ago, we nearly lost this landmark, but thanks to support from the community, it’s been rebuilt and is back in business.

In fact, to kick off the summer season, the Admiral Twin is showing a classic double-feature this Thursday – “The Outsiders,” and another Coppola classic, “Rumble Fish.” The Admiral Twin seen onscreen at the Admiral Twin. Definitely a must-see this summer!

To celebrate summer and this great film created in our city, I came up with a few inspirations for your summer drive-in experience. Whether you’re feeling a retro-’50s vibe, or you want to experience a memorable date night, the drive-in is definitely where it’s at in Tulsa!

gift guide: graduation

The season of celebrations has commenced!  My youngest sister graduated from college this past weekend, and I couldn’t be prouder!  I know there are many more graduations, both high school and college, upcoming in the next few weeks.  Finding a unique gift is often something I struggle with, and this event was no different.  So here I’ll share some nifty ideas I came across on my own hunt in hopes that it will spur ideas for you and your own grad.

Everyone seems to love Abraham Lincoln.  He is everywhere lately! –  His birthday passed last week on February 12th.  President’s Day was yesterday, celebrating the birthdays of George Washington and ol’ Honest Abe.  And this coming Sunday, February 24th at 6:00PM cst, the new movie Lincoln will contend for “Best Picture” (as well as 11 other categories) at this year’s The Oscars.

Locally, Book Smart Tulsa is hosting author and TIMES magazine editor David Von Drehle at Gilcrease Museum this very evening – Tuesday, February 19th – at 7:00pm for a big Abraham Lincoln event.  Admission is free if you are interested!

Shopping Alert: Spring Brights, Prints and a Good Cause

burberryprorsum Shopping Alert: Spring Brights, Prints and a Good Cause

Image of Burberyy Prorsum via Style Bistro

I’m already ready for spring — especially for the  great fashion this year, full of brights, floral prints and black-and-white stripes. Have you been looking at all those dreamy catalogs from the mail? With all the sherbet hues, it’s a little like Candy Land! I’m all in.

In Oklahoma, you have to be prepared for any kind of weather. We’ve had a warm winter, so spring could start in the middle of February — or it could snow for weeks and spring arrives in April. So prompt spring shopping is a must…especially since it’s all arriving in stores now. (Great justification, huh?)

Here are a few things on my radar right now:

Shopping Alert: Spring Brights, Prints and a Good Cause

1. Tribal Double-Ring, BCBG 2. Pyramid Zip Clutch in citrus, Michael Kors 3.Cafe Capri in dark cove, J Crew 4. Ballet flats in green, Seychelles 5. Kate Spade sunglasses in turquoise, Piperlime 6. Green dot tee, Gap

But the best part of spring shopping for me is an annual fundraiser I’m involved with — the YWCA of Tulsa’s Wine Women & Shoes. Full disclaimer: I’m a board member of the YWCA. But long before I was involved personally, I’ve been a fan of this event and this great organization. Shoes, shopping and wine? It’s a guaranteed fun time with great shopping from vendors across the country. Shopping can be guilt-free — especially in the spring! For more, visit wwstulsa.org.

Edgar Payne: The Scenic Journey currently exhibited at Gilcrease Museum

I had a lovely visit to The Gilcrease Museum this weekend to view the exhibit, Edgar Payne:  The Scenic Journey. I highly recommend a personal visit, as I’ve been unable to find most of my favorite images to share with you here.

I especially enjoyed the color palettes of all the individual paintings. Stunning vistas with broad brush strokes were the order of the day and sent my mind wandering.

Sycamore in Autumn did happen to be one of my favorites and I’m happy to share it here. But I’ll repeat, these in person have movement and grandeur that you can only get in person. Plus with our very mild Oklahoma winter, it’s a great time to take a walk around the grounds and enjoy the views of the Osage Hills as Thomas Gilcrease must have.

I’d like to take the opportunity to suggest that museum passes are a great gift idea. They provide experiences, memories and inspiration without the risk of cluttering space or getting tossed aside after a short period. We’ve given zoo passes as gifts in our family and it’s always a hit.

Super Bowl Survival Guide

Time to get ready!  Kick-off is right around the corner!  This Sunday, February 3rd marks Super Bowl XLVII when the Baltimore Ravens will take on the San Francisco 49ers in New Orleans.  I love the Super Bowl.  While I can definitely cheer on a good football game, my entertainment mostly centers around the gathering of friends and the stuffing of face… but I enjoy it nonetheless!

If you aren’t a football fan and will be dragged to a watch party this weekend, let me try to help by giving you a few reasons you should get in the spirit.  First of all, it means the end of football season with no games again until late summer.  You can celebrate that, right?

But more interestingly, the head coaches of these two teams are brothers – Jim and John Harbaugh!  (I believe the sports world has christened this game the HarBowl).  How cool is that?!  I bet their parents are as proud as can be.  And what a nifty rivalry there will be on the field this year.

Of course the entertainment features are always the highlights.  This year Alicia Keys will be singing the National Anthem, while Beyonce will be performing the Half-Time Show.

Food is always a big draw at any party, especially a Super Bowl party!  Bite size foods are big hits for sports crowds.  You don’t have to sit at a table to eat, and you can mingle while munching.  Here are a few great ideas for some yummy finger foods:

Mini corn dogs – one of my favorites.  These are already on my list to bring to the shindig I’ll be attending.

Commercials are probably the #1 reason the big game has so many viewers.  After you find off a food coma, check out some fun Super Bowl commercial games.  They definitely help you stay engaged with the group and interested in the game, even if you don’t know the rules of football.

Apocalyptic Adventures

Well, tomorrow is the big day.  The last day.  The day the world is supposedly coming to an end, according to the Mayan calendar… or so rumors say.  It’s too bad I just wasted my final days fighting the crowds, buying and wrapping all those Christmas presents, all for naught.  But getting out of a few deadlines doesn’t seem too bad.

No time like the present, then, to forgive one another, hug our loved ones tight and do all those things we have always wanted to do but have never gotten around to.  Or at the very least, simply enjoy the remaining hours to the best of your ability.  Better get started – you only have about 24 hours!!!  Carpe Diem!

If you are local to Tulsa, you could always head downtown to El Guapo’s Cantina for their Atacolypse!  (According to their Facebook page it consists of “three inverted flour tortilla shells stuffed with 30 ounces of carnitas, lettuce, cilantro, onions, pico de gallo, queso and spicy taco sauce.”)  Eat it all in one sitting, and you receive a free t-shirt!

For those who enjoy extreme sports, you can live your final day to its fullest while practicing shooting zombies that are sure to arise during the impending zombie invasion by playing some rounds at Viking Airsoft (nerf versions are available for the tiny zombie-killers)!

Don’t forget to do a little end-of-the-world research, while you’re at it!  Shaun of the Dead, Night of the Living Dead and Zombieland should be perfect for tips to beating the living dead.  Speaking of… an AMC’s The Walking Dead marathon might be helpful too.  Just curl up with your significant other and veg out together for one last movie night on the couch.

A comprehensive survival kit is a must.  Good ones, like this one from Menosunocerouno, include bottled water, matches, a knife and chocolate, of course.  And be sure to locate your tent and fill your backpack with a first-aid kit, change of clothes and duct tape prior to the invasion.

Meet Our Sponsors — The Alliday Show

PH Sponsors Alliday1 Meet Our Sponsors The Alliday ShowBriana Hefley Shepard, founder of the Alliday Show/ Image by Dawn Thackray

In addition to featuring our Winter 2012 issue, this month we’re showing our love and appreciation to our sponsors.

Without their support, we’d be a group of women with hundreds (and I mean hundreds) of ideas with limited means to produce them. We appreciate those who are helping us make Prairie Hive the best online design magazine and blog it can be!

So, we wanted to give these sponsors an opportunity to share some insights about their local businesses all month, ergo our first “Meet Our Sponsors” series!

First up is Briana Hefley Shepard, founder of the third annual Alliday Show in Tulsa.

This is one of our favorite local events every year. The show began as a way for local artists and crafters to gather and sell their wares to shoppers hungry for unique, handmade gifts. Since it began, it has exploded and is a must for any discerning gift-giver.

And it’s a great excuse for a girls’ shopping day — beat the lines and traffic and browse through some wonderful vendors.

Not only do you get to meet and support local artisans, crafters and artists — but you also get to knock out a lot of holiday shopping in one place. Can’t beat that!  Be sure to mark your calendars for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 15 — the show is FREE — at the Tulsa Fairgrounds.

For more, check the Alliday website. We’ll see you there!

Here’s our Q&A with Briana:

Prairie Hive: How has the Alliday Show evolved since it debuted several years ago?

Briana: In many ways, the show has changed since the beginning.  First, the event is held in December as opposed to June like when it first started.  We’ve grown from 60 artists to 80-plus artists in addition to several community groups!  Tulsa’s support continues to grow and for that, we are insanely grateful.

PH: What are some highlights shoppers can look forward to at this year’s show?

Briana: We’ll have more artists than ever before and an incredibly wide variety of wares to choose from!  I’ve already begun my shopping list and it just keeps growing!  Also, for the first 50 entrants in the door, we’ll be handing out free tote bags filled with swag from the artists!  And just like our past shows, there are no entry fees!  It’s a great place to finish (or start!) holiday shopping.

PH: How has the craft/handmade community changed in Tulsa over the last several years?

Briana: Gosh, it seems to me that the handmade community has boomed over the past few years!  Not only are more people finding that creative side in themselves but also people in general are embracing and celebrating the handmade movement.  People are seeking out handmade goods more than they were in the recent past.

PH: What has most surprised you since starting the Alliday Show?

Briana: The talent and creativity that our state has to offer. I am constantly amazed at what people can come up with and execute!  It’s refreshing and inspiring.

PH: What’s the value, in your opinion, of buying/receiving a handmade item as a gift?

Briana: I love to have something with a story attached.  Handmade gifts are full of these stories.  Some of my favorite things about buying directly from the artist are seeing their passion, hearing about their creative process and supporting a fellow creative.  You are able to find such personalized, perfect gifts for everyone when shopping handmade; even gifts for those hard-to-shop-for people!

El Dia de los Muertos – Living Arts of Tulsa Celebrates the Day of the Dead

Dia de los Muertos is coming next week, are you excited? This year is special for me.

You might remember this post about miniature altars. I’ve enjoyed studying other’s cultures and traditions for as long as I can recall. In the fourth grade, it was pioneers, in sixth, Egyptians, many more followed, most notably Italians in college and 20′s era Americans shortly after. I guess I’ve had a little bit of a theme this year too.

After that post you can imagine my joy when I was contacted and invited to participate in the El Dia de los Muertos celebration at Living Arts of Tulsa. I can’t believe it’s already time, but the altars are available for viewing October 30-31 from 1-5 p.m., and the festival is November 1 (Happy Birthday Dad!) from 5-10:30 p.m.

I really hope we see you there. I’m quite excited about the whole thing. Don’t get me wrong, I love Halloween. But I love even more celebrating, remembering and honoring those loved ones who’ve passed before us. I think the tradition of dedicating a day to their memories and lives is special.

I’ll be celebrating my own way with a little piece of art to honor my great Grandmother, Nada Minnie Marie Terry who taught me how to crochet when I was young. I have the fondest memories of visiting Grandma and Grandpa Terry’s house after school with my mom. We went a couple of times a week and when you walked through the front door, the whole house smelled of cinnamon from the homemade cinnamon rolls she always made. Grandpa Terry’s specialty was doughnuts.

I plan on making a miniature altar artwork piece every year in honor of different family members. I’d make them all this year if I could find the time…

Summer Wedding Reception – Keeping it Cool

I think the most important things to us for celebrating our marriage are gathering with family and friends. Due to that, we ended up with a reception date of August 4th this summer.

You might not guess by looking at these photos that it seemed almost impossible to make this party happen.

On August 4th in Oklahoma this year, we had just endured weeks of above 110-degree days, months of no rain and burn bans. And that night, massive wild fires were burning down homes and towns just to the southwest of downtown. As I drove to our friend’s house where the reception took place, ash was falling out of the grey-green sky and the sun was starting to set. It was 104 degrees. By the time the night was ending, we’d endured the first wind and rain storm we’d had since early June, but somehow, we still had a beautiful celebration. Thank you family and friends.

The colors for the party were easily chosen since I had already decided on a saturated blue-turquoise. I told Jeff to pick a color and he chose green, so I added a lime green and a kelly green. I thought it worked perfectly with our reception site, the urban backyard pool area of our friend’s home. The cool blue water and fun green umbrellas tied right in. They also have wonderful textures in a galvanized garage and slatted fence, the wood fence in back, and original brick of the once-factory building.

The bar top tables had a simple grey cloth and quick, easy flower centerpieces. Thanks to a good friend who collected green water bottles for me all summer and my sister who picked up fun blooms from a local store the day before.

The fans were great for texture, natural color and keeping guests cool on a hot night. Unfortunately they didn’t make the fun favors I dreamed of so I still have a box full of them. You might see them in an art installation later this year. Oh, who am I kidding, it’ll definitely take until next year for me to tackle that project.

I’ve loved succulents since high school. My mom would always have hens and chicks in her garden. They are quite the trend these days, but I’ll probably continue to love them even when they go back out of style. I’ve planted lots of them in every garden I’ve ever had.

So I decided terrariums were the way to go. I kept it really simple and used what I could find at our local stores. To add a little interest and nod to our sparkling personalities, I gold leafed a free-hand stripe around the middle size. The large terrarium got a miniature Christmas ornament to stand in for a garden gazing ball.

For the large round top tables I used the same grey neutral with a rustic square of burlap (Thanks Lisa!) and just scattered more fans around. I like using tone on tone to create textures. I didn’t want the tables to garner lots of attention because I think happy, friendly faces at weddings are always so much more interesting.

I had the bright idea that people might want to carry some paper parasols to shield themselves from the setting, but intense August sun. I still think it was a great idea and can just picture my Grandmother proudly twirling hers. With the firey sky and the party moving inside, I used them as props on the floor and to create a backdrop on the drink tables.

My dress was made for my mother-in-law by her mother, Mommo. It matches the aquamarine in my engagement ring perfectly. It has a lace overlay. It fit just right, no alterations. It was better than all the vintage dresses I found online. My mom and I made my sash. Worn also with my wedding ceremony dress, it tied my events together just right.

The celebration was beautiful. And emotionally moving. And fun. But nothing lives up to waking up next to your best friend every day for the last six years. Here’s to the next 60!
