A Simple First Birthday Party : New Mama Necessities

IMG 2012sm A Simple First Birthday Party : New Mama Necessities

We made it!  A whole year and we didn’t break him.  It’s so unbelievable how fast it went by.  To celebrate, we wanted something simple with just family and a couple of friends – mainly because 1) our house is tiny, 2) it’s freezing outside and 3) he’s only one after all – and has no clue what’s going on.

We kept it simple and instead of getting theme-y, I just went with a color scheme and added a few easy touches.  The invitations I found were the perfect colors:

invite A Simple First Birthday Party : New Mama Necessities

I bought these locally at You’re Invited and printed them myself to save time (after Christmas I got in a bit of a time crunch!).  Once the invitations were out, I just went with matching colors in balloons, plates, napkins, etc and added a few special touches like the O-N-E letters on the table.  I fell in love with a sprinkle cake I saw on Pinterest so enlisted Antoinette Baking Company to do a big cake and a mini smash cake for the little guy to enjoy all to himself! I have to say – the sprinkles were a big hit with the handful of kids at the party.  I thought we might have a marathon cake eating session on our hands when the guest of honor started picking the sprinkles off to eat instead of digging into the whole cake, though (don’t worry  - he figured it out).

For a more personal decorations, I made a simple photo garland, with snapshots starting from newborn to current.  Sure, I could have jazzed this up by mounting every photo to pretty matching scrapbook paper…but I liked the look (and time factor) of these two pom-pom garlands with simple clothespins to attach the photos.  I have it hung up in his room now as a fun decoration as well!

I found my kiddo’s  adorable t-shirt on Etsy that you can customize with colors, pictures, etc.  It gave him something special to wear for all the photo opps (and wore it again for his 1 Year Old pictures the next week).  I’ve seen some great hats, tees, and more on Etsy, all styles – if you aren’t crafty enough to DIY it.

Two great ideas I saw after the fact were a first birthday time capsule (find a cute container and add items like the invitation, candle, decorations, hat, notes from party attendees, etc.) and these great hand lettered posters that tell all your baby’s favorite things at age one.  I still may try to round up the time capsule – if I can collect the notes from all our family members!

We had a small but fun group, and a good time was had by all.  I do have a few tips for other rookie planners like me:

Remember, your little one is still easily overwhelmed, and though the first birthday is mostly for the parents – you still have to plan around your baby.

- Pick a time between naps and meals when your babyis most likely to be happy, rested and fed.  We did ours from 12-2, right in between naptimes, giving guests time to clear out before our 3:00 afternoon siesta.

- Keep the guest list small.  Unless you have a social butterfly for a 1 year old, they aren’t likely to have many friends yet.  Keep the list to family and close friends and save the big kid bash for next year!

- Take photos of the decorations, cake, and your baby before the guests arrive.  Once everyone gets there, it’s chaos!

- Appoint a family member to be the “paparazzi” for the day.  You won’t have time to take pictures, taking care of your little one, hostessing and making sure things flow smoothly.  (Thank you Aunt Liz and Cousin Elizabeth!)

Baby’s First Christmas : New Mama Necessities

SVbabysfirst Babys First Christmas : New Mama Necessities

Baby’s First Christmas is coming up quickly, so what’s a mama to do, but get all the necessary accoutrements ready for the little guy?  For a style conscious mama, however – this task is more difficult than it would seem.  Baby holiday stuff is, for the most part, horrendous.  Seriously, just take a look at this screen shot from a google search:

Babys First Christmas : New Mama Necessities

What?  My kid deserves better than that.  Since I launched on a (ridiculously extensive) search for my own, I thought I’d share the fruits of my labor with you.  Since the stocking and the first ornament are the essentials for baby’s first holiday, here are my picks for the coolest ones out there.

My take on stockings for kids is that they should be fun, but since you will probably want to use it for a while, not too babyish (no cartoon characters, please!).  All the ones shown below can be personalized, because we definitely don’t want Santa to get confused, right?  If you are crafty (or have a friend who sews), I love the idea of choosing your own fabric.  Pick #3 is from Etsy and there are more choices there as well than I can even start with, so hop on and customize to your heart’s content.

Monogram Vintage Stocking, Red Envelope.  5.  Cream & Red Stripe Fair Isle Stocking, Pottery Barn.  6. Red Canvas Stocking with Ceramic Name Tile, Paloma’s Nest.  7. Tangled Christmas Lights Stocking, Sunny Lee Studio.

For Baby’s First Christmas Ornament, my advice is to stick with Etsy (see Google Image above).  There are some sleek looks from Red Envelope, Pottery Barn, and a few others, but you can get a similar look and support a small business shopping on Etsy.

While I’m sharing, how freaking cute are these two ornaments?  I found them on my Etsy search and just had to share.  Eeeeee!!!!

Kids Room Decor: Fresh, Kid-Inspired Spaces

LWheidispillows Kids Room Decor: Fresh, Kid Inspired Spaces

So…I’m taking a little sneak peak of our upcoming Issue 8 (our house!) onto Tulsa’s Great Day Green Country today with this post on decorating kids rooms!  As a little reprieve from all of the holiday bustle, this is something to ponder and search on Pinterest when you’re tired of shopping online.

Out of the six Prairie Hive girls, I am one of the only two non-designers.  I’m sure you’ve figured that out by now if you’ve been reading our blog posts.  But I do care about design and I love working on my own house.  Like the rest of my house, I’ve had to piece things together for our three kids’ rooms as time, budget and inspiration have allowed.  There’s no insta-room here at the Wakefields.  But that’s OK because I enjoy searching for just the right thing or, in many cases, finding the best way to incorporate and make use of what I already have.

Like every child, mine have MANY interests.  It would be so easy to go all-out horses in my daughters room, or put up a car border and bedspread in my youngest son’s room and call it good.  But as we all know, those sweet obsessions often change, so instead of picking a theme for their rooms,  I’ve tried to create rooms that reflect their personalities and then incorporate the things they love into the space.

LWbecksroom Kids Room Decor: Fresh, Kid Inspired Spaces

The most recent room that I’ve worked on is my oldest son’s room.  For the longest time he knew he was destined to be a cowboy, so his room had become a small museum of cowboy collectibles.  Pillows, picture frames, posters and even cowboy hats and ropes adorned his walls and shelves.  But the inevitable happened and he got older.  Not a lot- he’s not all grown up (none of my kids will ever be all grown-up – they promised).  Nevertheless, it was time to move out some of the more childish decor and make room for something more tween appropriate.  He talks about it less and doesn’t dress up everyday anymore (too bad, it was so cute!), but I’m pretty sure there’s still some cowboy in this kid.  So we couldn’t let it go completely.  We kept the ropes and hats, as they are real and may come in useful someday.  We replaced some art with the Warhol Elvis print – still a cowboy influence, but much cooler and more grown-up.  To save money (it’s a huge poster), I hung it with clips (about $2 apiece) instead of framing it.  Other pictures that had been scattered about in cowboy frames were rehung in a photo collage in more modern frames.  We added a reading chair from a local resale shop, used his same dresser and nightstand and currently we’re borrowing a full bed (a family member’s extra) to replace his twin.  Not necessarily what I would pick if I was buying him all new furniture, but this is what I had to work with, and really, we’re liking it!

To pick colors, I started with a graphic navy, aqua and green throw pillow that I found at I.O. Metro.  I pulled the green out of the pillow for the wall color.  The navy and white striped duvet and shams are from Target and the quilt was already his.  I found the fun bull head at Rivercity Trading Post in Jenks, OK for $35.

LWbeckspicwall Kids Room Decor: Fresh, Kid Inspired Spaces

LWbeckspicwallcloseup Kids Room Decor: Fresh, Kid Inspired Spaces

There’s definitely plenty left to be done in his room, but it’s a good start.  It’s more streamlined and it suits his needs as he gets older and spends less time playing on the floor and more time sitting at his desk or reading in his chair.

LWheidisroom Kids Room Decor: Fresh, Kid Inspired Spaces

My daughter is 8 and although she’s still pretty little, she won’t be forever.  So I tried to make her room little girl with potential to grow up.  I found these quilts at Anthropologie and fell in love with them, so they were my starting point for her room.  Her rooms gets a lot of light, so I was able to pull the darker blue out of the quilts for the walls.  Her beds came from an estate sale around the corner from my house ($230 for both!).  I LOVE estate sales.  They’re such a great source for unique, often inexpensive finds.  If you can wait until everything goes 1/2 price, you’re bound to find some good bargains!  And I love using “grown-up” furniture for kids.  There’s no rule that only kid furniture can go in kid rooms.  The rug is from Urban Outfitters.  I found many a beautiful rug that would have looked great in her room, but little girls love their paint and markers, so I couldn’t justify an expensive rug for her (or any of the kids for that matter).  Kids equal mess even if they’re careful.  It’s not their fault and I want them to be kids!

LWheidisdresser Kids Room Decor: Fresh, Kid Inspired Spaces

This dresser used to be in a different room.  It was old, missing handles, hard to open, etc.  So when it became hers, it needed some freshening up.  I just painted it, found some handles that (almost) matched the originals and painted them.  And I used the yellow in other places around the room to help tie everything together- like the monogram on the shams in the first picture.  I found the shams on sale at Pottery Barn and had them monogrammed at my local tailor shop.

LWheidisboxes Kids Room Decor: Fresh, Kid Inspired Spaces

And to corral all of her “treasures” that she comes home with, I’ve used decorative boxes.  The boxes above are paper boxes from the Inviting Place.  There’s no telling what’s in them, but they certainly help keep surfaces tidy!

LWsimonsroom Kids Room Decor: Fresh, Kid Inspired Spaces

Ok,  on to the youngest member of our family.  Or, as he likes to refer to himself – they newest member of the family.  He’s 5.  And his needs are very different than the other two- as are his interests.  He is also probably our “hippest” child (don’t tell the others).  But that may just be the nature of the third child.  In any case, bright colors and a more modern look seem to suit him better.  However,  I can’t go all modern, so there’s a couple of old, worn-in pieces in his room to make me happy.  His bed is an antique rope bed from a local antique store.  It’s a little bit smaller than a standard twin bed and it’s very low, so it seemed more practical than investing in a toddler bed.  He will be able to use this one for many years until he outgrows it.  He started school this year and wanted a desk like his siblings, so we found his this inexpensive one at Ikea.  His furry white rug is from Target.  It is surprisingly very easy to wash, so that’s a huge plus!

The fabric on the canvases was intended for a different purpose, but I haven’t gotten around to those curtains or pillows yet, so instead I stapled it to inexpensive canvases for quick art.  It adds color and interest and fills the space.  Plus, it’s easy to change and the fabric can be repurposed.

LWsimonsbookcase Kids Room Decor: Fresh, Kid Inspired Spaces

Bins on the bookshelves keep all of the small toys organized.  The other things are just a random mix of his toys, a trophy or two and baby things I can’t let go (including his mobile hanging from the ceiling that may still be there when he’s 18!).

LWsimonsdresser Kids Room Decor: Fresh, Kid Inspired Spaces

The thing about decorating kids room is they have a lot of stuff and they love what they love, so if you want to have a somewhat decorated, cohesive space and not squelch their personalities, you have to meet somewhere in the middle.  They won’t have toys everywhere forever and when those days are gone I know I, for one, will be sad.    Try to use their interests and personalities as inspiration, but not pick just one as a theme; that way as they grow and change, so can their spaces.

Happy Decorating!

Next week, will you have the kids home from school for a few hectic days of cooking in a full house of in-laws?  Need to keep them busy?  Well now is the time to gather materials for some Thanksgiving crafts to keep the little pilgrims busy.  Here are a few Thanksgiving crafts for kids to inspire your own.

I love the idea of a Thankful Tree as shown above.  It’s a great reminder of all the good things in our life in the midst of the bustling season.

These pilgrims made of little clay pots, wooden balls and felt are adorable and would keep young ones busy for a while!

Last-Minute Halloween Costumes

Did your kids shame you into dresssing up?  Got a last-minute invitation?  For anyone who waited til the last minute to put together a costume,  here are some quick and easy ideas for costumes you can put together using things you already have around the house!

For kids OR adults:

Sushi – wear all white, take an orange pillow (or wrap one with orange fabric), and use a dark green ribbon (velcro makes it look neater) to tie on the “sashimi”.  For extra points, wear a green hat to add a little wasabi!

SV1031picnic Last Minute Halloween Costumes

Picnic – Cut a hole for your head in an old tablecloth, then drape over your shoulders.  Add some cutout ants, and carry a picnic basket (also doubles as a trick or treat basket!).

DIY Superhero – Take a solid color sweatshirt, and use a contrasting color duct tape (Duck brand has lots of choices!) and create stripes, a letter (for your first name or a superhero name), on the shirt (and pants if you have them!).  Pin a matching towel to the shoulders and presto!

For adults only – check the headlines or pop culture for great, easy costume ideas!

Drunk Uncle – carry a flask, wear an untucked shirt and loosened tie.  Use blush to make your cheeks and nose red.  Stay in character by slurring your words, stumbling and general inappropriateness.

 notimpressed Last Minute Halloween Costumes

Not Impressed – remember McKayla Maroney at the summer games?  Add US and Olympic logos to a gray zip up jacket, make a silver medal out of cardboard, foil, and purple ribbon.  Pull your hair into a ponytail, add some extra eyeshadow, carry a bouquet and wrinkle your nose all night.

SV1031Insta Last Minute Halloween Costumes

Instagram – use a photo mat (or make your own from posterboard), then add amber (blue or red will also work, depending on your “filter” preference) cellophane to create a live Instagram effect.  Bonus points for Instagramming your Instagram.

While we are talking Instagram – check out this insanely cool costume.  This guy made a working Instagram camera, built into the costume. So cool.  Start now for next year.

As the months fly by, we are definitely getting a better sense of what our son does and doesn’t like – he’s got quite the little personality!  One thing is clear at this point in time: this kid LOVES books.  As an avid reader, I’m delighted – I hope this is something that sticks around.  If you’ve seen my nursery tour, you know that  we have tons of vintage books, but what we are lacking right now (especially after reading ALL of them, multiple times each day) is cute board books that he can flip through and look at the pictures, and that we can talk through with him without him getting impatient (too much story is bad these days).  Since Christmas is approaching, I’ve been on the lookout for some cool new additions to his collection.  We have to keep this budding genius stimulated, and I’d like him to develop an appreciation for good design while we are at it! I’ve rounded up my top picks for cool baby books (ahem, grandparents – consider this the first part of our Christmas Wish List!).

Party Time!

LWsimonscupcakes Party Time!

And so last weekend it was time for yet another birthday at our house.   Our little guy was turning 5!  And as it seems to go for the poor third child, he had never had a real birthday party.  So this was the year.  And we decided to have a big backyard birthday party like we used to do before, well, before we had three kids!  We love having our kids’ friends AND their families over, so we were excited to do it again.  It’s such a good opportunity to see friends we don’t get to see as much as we’d like and it’s a great way to meet our kids’ new friends and parents.  So as it goes, our party of a few of his closest friends and family turned into a party of 50!

I’m not complaining – it was great fun.  But the elaborate party set-up I envisioned had to be edited a little bit as there were many other things to get done.  Luckily, the entertainment was taken care of.  He really wanted a “bouncy house” (that’s what he calls large inflatables), so between that and just playing in the backyard, the kids were pooped by the end.

Instead of trying to come up with a birthday party theme, I decided to just go with “birthday” as inspiration for my set-up.  I wanted to make everyone a party hat, but as my time became limited, I decided to just make hats as a centerpiece and use hats from the store for the kids.

LWsimonspartyhatcopy Party Time!

All of my hats turned out differently.  I just decided to try a different design on each one.  The hat above though, was my favorite.  To get started, I made a cone out of a half-circle cut out of cardboard.  I did not do any precise measuring, so it took a little tweaking until it was the size I wanted and it was even.  To make the cone, just roll up the half circle until it’s the size you want at the bottom and then attach (I stapled mine).   To make the tissue pom pom on the top, I cut tissue at a few different lengths and stapled them to the inside where the cone would come together.  For the outside, I glued craft paper onto the cardboard and then for kicks I glittered around the lines.  I figure a little glitter can never hurt!  At the bottom, I glued three different layers of tissue around the inside starting with the shortest pieces and then finishing with a layer of the longest pieces, alternating colors on each layer.

LWsimonspartyplate Party Time!

Because I was just using plain pre-made hats that I found at Party City, I decided to embellish them a little by glueing pom pons (from Hobby Lobby) to the top.  The extra pom pons were scattered around the table for color and interest and the kids loved playing with them.  The fabric for the table cloth came from one of my favorite new stores in Tulsa, Owl and Drum.  They have a fantastic selection of fabrics, crafts and hand-made gifts!  The fun orange napkins came from The Inviting Place and the plates are from Target.

LWsimonspartytablecopy Party Time!

And finally, each child took home a little bag with orange and blue rock candy that I found at Sweet Tooth.  Almost every kid loves rock candy and it comes in so many fun colors – such an easy way to tie in your party colors AND send home something they’ll like!

Overall it was a fun party!  The set-up was easy, but it was fun and festive – just what it needed to be.  Because really, five year olds don’t care about the decorations and although it’s fun to make it look great for your guests, there’s still food to cook and a house to clean, so it’s got to be realistic!

Happy Partying!

Sarah’s Nursery Tour

Vespasian Nursery 1 Sarahs Nursery Tour

All photos by Ruby Jewel Studio

I gave you a sneak peek a while back in one of my New Mama posts, but I wanted to follow up with a full tour of my nursery.  We were lucky enough to have a pretty large room to work with, which is great since we have a reallllly small living room to play in.  We spend lots of time in Bowie’s room playing, reading, and just spending time as a family.

Since our home is Mid-Century Modern, we knew we wanted to keep the nursery clean, simple and someplace he could grow into. I had this paint color in mind from the beginning and knew I wanted to use a bold, graphic rug that could either transition into a big boy room later, or be used someplace else in the house.  I found this one for a steal at One King’s Lane (it was actually the first thing I bought for the room!).  The dresser/changing table is repurposed from another room in the house, but other than that we bought most of the furniture from IKEA.  My one big splurge was the Pottery Barn Kids Glider – and I’m so glad!  We have spent hours in that chair, washed the slipcover a couple of times, and the gliding part of the chair can be removed once we are finished with the “baby” years and we can put it somewhere else in the house.

Vespasian Nursery 13 Sarahs Nursery Tour

I struggled to find bedding I liked – everything was either too “baby”, came in a set full of things I didn’t need, or was astronomically expensive!  I settled on this pattern from Dwell Studio – gray dots.  The pillows (which – don’t worry – I don’t keep in the crib while he’s sleeping in there) are from CB2 and Land of Nod, and are great for all the time we spend on the floor playing.  They also got alot of use while he was in that “constantly toppling over backward” stage.  While I was pregnant, we had a sudden outbreak of earthquakes in Oklahoma, so I was terrified to put something heavy or breakable over his bed.  I found this cool fabric at a local shop (it’s leather over linen) and stretched it over a canvas.

My husband is a musician, so we have an abundance of guitars around the house.  In addition to needing a place to stash one or two, we also knew that he would want to play for our son, so the music theme evolved pretty organically!  We found the orange album cover in his vinyl collection, the orange guitar pillow, and the toy box (I couldn’t resist it!), and the color palette came together!

We had a ton of fun with the walls – in addition to the guitar and album covers, I found this great print of monsters playing music that fit perfectly with our color scheme.  The black and white photo is from our newborn session with Alayna.

One of my favorite things in the room is the framed onesie.  We didn’t decide on a name until after our son was born, but had been toying around with the name Bowie when we came across this onesie in a shop in Chicago and decided to buy it “just in case”.  After he grew out of it, I put it in a frame I had…as kind of a subtle way of of putting his name up in the room.

Another focal point is the reading wall – I inherited  all my old books from my parent’s garage, and most of them are in great shape.  I have always been a big reader, so I hope the same goes for my son.  I used the old “spice racks from IKEA as bookshelves” trick (thanks Pinterest!)to display them.  Now that he’s pulling up, the more fragile vintage books go up top and the ones that he can destroy if needed are on the bottom couple of shelves.I also knew I would be incorporating the rocking chair…it was my mother’s when she was a child, and then mine.  I had originally planned on painting it, but now I’m so glad I decided to leave it as-is.I found this great print by Roll & Tumble Press at a local shop (HOOD, which has now merged with Bison & Bear in the Deco District) and thought it was great, but was out of wall space!  We put it on the door and now say goodnight to the moon every night before we turn out the lights.

Overall, I’m thrilled with the way the nursery turned out.  We kept things pretty simple and inexpensive, used alot of what we already had for decoration, and ended up with a light filled, cheery but relaxing room to spend time in.

Baby Food Makin’ – New Mama Necessities

SVbabyjars Baby Food Makin New Mama Necessities

Image via Honest Fare

One of the next major hurdles to tackle in this New Mama adventure – solid foods.  About mid-way through my pregnancy, my husband announced that he couldn’t wait to make our own food for the little guy.  My thoughts on the matter – “sure buddy, it’s all you”.  I’m not known for my prowess in the kitchen, and tend to lean toward anything involving the least amount of hassle possible…even more so with the additional stresses of motherhood.  But we also try to eat as healthy as we can around here – lots of produce, seasonal foods, whole grains, and the like (I’ll admit, the advantage of having a chef for a husband makes it a heck of alot easier to make it happen)…so why wouldn’t we start our baby off the same way?

We started pretty easy – avocado, zucchini, carrots, peas, bananas, etc. – but even I have been comfortable prepping this stuff.  It’s way easier than you would imagine, doesn’t take much time, and if you do it once or twice a week, you’re set for quite a while with freezer stock.  We have been doing just plain pureed foods so far, but are ready to venture into some herbs, meats and more complex flavors in the next month or so.  A friend gave me the Williams Sonoma Cooking for Baby book, which includes everything from basic purees (helps kitchen dummies like me with info like how long to steam things before tossing in the food processor) up to stews and snacks for toddlers.  It also includes lists like what foods to feed (and not feed) when, storage instructions, and basics like the best time of day to start the little one with solids. I’ve also referenced the Wholesome Homemade Baby Food site for both basic info and “recipes”, and recently ran across the NurtureBaby site, which I plan to start checking out as well.

Naturally, there are a million gadgets sold for baby food making.. I’m a little minimalist about some of this baby stuff (and by minimal, I mean “cheap”), so we use an old fashioned steam basket and food processor, but I’ve always thought that this happy little guy would make the task fun (and it’s all in one, so fewer dishes!)

For storage, we like these OXO blocks – they come in a couple of different sizes, come with a freezer tray, and are dishwasher safe.  I just write on the top with a whiteboard marker what’s in it and the date, and we are set.  We also just picked up one of these freezer trays for overflow (you could use a regular ice cube tray as well, but I liked the lid on this one).

We were also given a small food mill similar to the one shown here – it’s great for softer foods like avocado and banana, or if you’re mashing up a small amount of something and don’t want to drag out the food processor.

As far as the actual feeding goes – I don’t have a strong preference on baby dishes, spoons, etc.  I will weigh in on bibs, however – I was given some great ones as a gift – they are lightweight, waterproof…we just rinse them off after a meal, hang to dry and use again. I can’t find the exact brand ANYWHERE online, but the ones shown are as close as I could get…just find something easy to rinse – because the last thing any new mom needs is MORE laundry!

However you go about making, storing or feeding your baby, just be sure to have the camera ready the first few times they taste something new.  We have some of the most hilarious and precious pics of our guy experiencing these new tastes…the first of many to come!
