Color Burst: Our Favorite Spring Colors

PH9 CTS 64 of 17 Color Burst: Our Favorite Spring ColorsSome of our favorite spring colors — Prairie Hive Spring Issue 9

What are your favorite spring colors? For our Spring Issue 9, a few themes came to light — saving space, creative entertaining,  DIYs and, of course, color.

As someone who has been a fan of the Easter egg palette — since birth, really — I couldn’t be happier that color is back in a big way.

This season seems to be replacing last year’s bold brights — aka neon — with hues reminiscent of bright sorbets and sherbets. Think Easter eggs with a bit more saturation. For example, I’m loving the colorful denim that’s in stores right now –it  reminds me of my butter yellow Guess jeans from back in the day. Come on, admit it . You had some of those jeans, too!

In light of all our color love, we each picked our favorite spring colors for our magazine’s Welcome page. So I included our reference photos below for a full perspective.

The lesson: Now is the time to brighten your life with some color, whether you buy a new throw pillow, paint a room, or buy (another) pair of yellow jeans.

Happy (almost) Spring!

Prairie Hive Magazine, Spring 2013 Issue

PH9 COVER web size Prairie Hive Magazine, Spring 2013 Issue

It’s here — our Spring Issue 9! Our featured couple — Daniel and Brie Matlach — are some of the most savvy DIY’ers we’ve ever met.

They fit perfectly into our issue’s theme: saving space, re-purposing items, and saving money — without sacrificing style.

You can read our Cool People, Cool House feature to find out how Daniel and Brie transformed a 722-square-foot garage space into a modern, artful loft space.

They did ALL the work themselves (yes, that means HVAC and the plumbing) and they stuck to their strict budget by being resourceful and creative. Not to mention the art– the couple’s collaborative art projects make the house a true original — including a silhouette project we translate into an easy how-to in our Get Crafty section!

We were so inspired by their colorful choices throughout the home, that we created our Celebrate the Style feature — a garden party in the middle of the city — with their style in mind.

Instead of renting furniture, we show you how to make comfortable seating from free wooden pallets, so your guests can cocktail under the stars while nibbling on bite-sized (and easy to make) snacks.

Spring is all about refreshing your home, working outside, and adding some color to your wardrobe.

We had a great time getting to know the Matlachs, and hope you find some inspiration from them in our Issue 9!

Prairie Hive Magazine – Spring Issue Sneak Peek!

PH9 CPCH 43 of 49 Prairie Hive Magazine Spring Issue Sneak Peek!

Here’s a sneak peek into Prairie Hive Magazine – the Spring Issue, out next Monday, March 11!  Our featured home is a showcase of both efficiency and style – with more storage and creativity packed into around 800 square feet than we could believe!  To top it off – this couple did ALL the work themselves – from plumbing to artwork, with many of the components coming from thrift stores, hardware stores, and yes, even the trash!

For our local Tulsa readers, you might recognize one of the pair from our Great Day Green Country appearances – he’s also known as Average Dan, who appears on the show each week to talk about events coming up around town.  Take it from us, his house is definitely above average!

We don’t want to give too much away – but take a look at a few of our favorite moments from the house – and come back Monday for the whole tour!

Image from Prairie Hive Magazine, Winter 2012 Issue

Hopefully by now, you’ve checked out our new issue of Prairie Hive Magazine!  To get in the holiday spirit, we collaborated with the elves over at Gleeful Peacock Mercantile to create some lovely winter garlands (who says they are just for Christmas?).

We asked each of the artists to give us the DIY details:

Painted Pinecone Garland, by Nikki at Gleeful Peacock

Items Needed: Pine Cones, Jute, Spray Paint, Hot Glue

Step 1 – Spray paint pinecones your desired colors.  This will take a few coats and you will want to spray at an angle that gets the paint into the core of the pine code.  Allow a day to dry.

Step 2 – Cut jute in 2” to 3” lengths. Hot glue the strips in a loop on top of the pinecones.

Step 3 – Wrap jute in a spiral around the loop and down the pinecone. Creating a cap that covers the glue from the loop. Cut the end and glue to secure.

Step 4 – Cute your just the desired length of garland plus a few feet extra. Start on one end, a foot in to allow a end to tie to an mantle or banister.  Tie the just around the loop of the first pinecone. Tie a pinecone every 6 to 8 inches and rotate colors as you please.

“Be Merry” Book Rosette Garland, by Tiffany Foster

Items needed :a book, letter stickers or cricut, hot glue gun, permanent adhesive, bakers twine, Exacto knife, glitter, tacky glue, paint brush, small clothespins

  1. Decide what you want your garland to say.  This will determine how many medallions you will need to make.
  2. Cut a good amount of book pages out close to the spine of the book.  You can use an exacto knife or a single blade of a sharp pair of scissors.

3. Cut 2 ½ x 8 inch strips (I use a clear ruler and a rotary cutter to make this process go faster).  Make sure to center the print on the strips so they are interesting.

 4. Using permanent adhesive (I used The Craft Collection Permanent Adhesive Tape Runner), join three strips together for each medallion you wish to make, overlapping about ¼ of an inch.

5. Once you have all your strips joined together begin accordion folding them end to end with about ¼ inch folds.

6. When all the strips are folded, join the two ends together with your permanent adhesive, making sure the folds match up.

 7. Place the circle on the table and press to center….now the magic happens. Ta! Da! A medallion!

8. This part is a little tricky.  While holding the the center put a little glob of hot glue in the middle   – don’t worry about what it looks like because we will be covering it with our letters later (I usually spread the glue into the grooves a little as it cools.  If you don’t like to live dangerously you might want to just glue a little circle onto the back or something safer).

9. Repeat those steps until you have all of your medallions folded and ready.

10. Now cut the letters for your garland.  I cut mine on my Circut using the Simply Sweet card size 1 ½” lower case on Red card stock.  You could also use stickers or freehand them onto your circles.

11. Punch or trace enough circles for each medallion.  I punched mine with a 1 & 7/8” circle punch.  You could also just trace something you had around the house that was the right size.

12. Sprinkle some gold glitter onto a paper plate and pour a little glue into a dish. I used Martha Stewart Florentine Gold glitter and Elmer’s Craft Bond Tacky Glue but I added a little water to it because it was very tacky and difficult to spread.

13. Paint the glue onto the edge of the circles and then dip into the glitter.  Repeat with each circle.  Do the same with the medallions.

20121124 171210 1024x768 Winter Garland DIY 13. Atttach letters to circles.  I used Martha Stewart ballpint-tip glue pen for this job because it is much easier to glue a tiny space with this tool.

14. Next attach your circles with a glue gun.  Use plenty of glue because the circle will help hold your medalion together.  Make sure the circle is in the center of the medallion.

15. Lay out your medallions in the order they will hang to determine how much bakers twine you will need.

16. Hang your twine.

17. Attach medalions to twine with mini- clothespins.

18. Be Merry!

The No Sew JOY Bunting by My Paper Pinwheel

Items Needed: Canvas Fabric, acrylic paint, form paint brush, foam alphabet stamps, natural twine, pom pom ribbon, fabric scraps, hot glue gun

1. Cut out three bunting shapes (I chose to use a pendant shape but you can easily do a traditional triangle shape).

2. Take foam alphabet stamps and acrylic paint and brush the paint just covering the letters.

3. Stamp each pendant with the letters.

4. Measure the twine for where the garland will hang.

5. Fold the top part of the pendants over the twine and hot glue it in place.

6. Take the pom pom ribbon and hot glue it across the word “Joy”.

7. Finished the garland with scrap fabric cut into a long strip and tied on each end.

Fabric Scrap Garland by Tiffany Foster

Items Needed: scraps of fabric, string of lights (50 light string is ideal for a mantle)

1. Cut fabric info 9″x2″ strips.

2. Tie onto the string of lights.

(Now that last one is my kind of DIY!) Watch for us on Great Day Green Country next week to show off these garlands and more!  After the show, for you non-crafty types, these garlands will be available for purchase at Gleeful Peacock Mercantile.

PH7 cover Issue Seven Fall 2012 is here!

Fall 2012 takes us to the home of a unique Tulsa couple – an architect and a designer getting married this September!  Their pop-mod style features tons of colorful, quirky accents and repurposed thrift store finds.  The bright, graphic style inspired a romantic stargazing picnic…perfect for cozying up on a crisp fall night! We also picked our faves for fall in fashion and interiors, took a road trip North to Wichita, KS and shared some great recipes for fall outings.

If you love the “tossed and found” style of our featured home, we hope you caught last week’s DIY inspired by a dripped paint art piece in their home!

Image Sneak Peek from Prairie Hive’s Online Magazine, Fall Issue!

For the complete house tour (chock full of funky, bright, pop goodness), check back on Monday, September 10 – when our Fall Issue hits the virtual newsstand!

Why yes, its a DIY from Sarah! Probably hard to believe, but this one is so easy even I can handle it.  When we visited our Issue 7 “Cool Peoople, Cool House”, I fell in love with the drip painting over fabric that the homeowner had created over the couples fireplace.

I had done something similar at my own home years before in a rush before our house was included in a neighborhood home tour.  With nothing over the fireplace and T minus 1 day, it seemed like a perfect quick fix.  Since then, I’ve had tons of people ask about it.  Taking it up a notch with a fabric backdrop is such a great way to add another layer to the piece, or to incorporate something you already have.

Materials:

Canvas

Fabric

Staple gun

Acrylic paint in 4 or 5 coordinating colors

Step 1: stretch the fabric over the canvas, stapling to the back to create a smooth surface.

Step 2: stand canvas up vertically (or whichever way you want the paint to run) on a drop cloth)

Step 3: squeeze paint from top of canvas and let it drip down.  Repeat.  Space it out randomly and squeeze varying amounts for a looser look.  Alternate colors, adding more as you see gaps.  I also found that letting the first round of paint dry, then adding more gives more dimension and can stop the colors from running together as much.  If the paint starts to run off the bottom of the canvas, you may want to lay it flat to dry or it can pool at the edge.

Step 4: paint the edge of the canvas where the drips started with a solid color to give it a finished look.

I like the look of the painting hung sideways, for a more dynamic feel.  If fabric isn’t your thing, you can always start with a basic painted canvas (shown in the gray/turquoise piece on today’s Great Day Green Country segment) as well.

See?  Easy art.
