spring style: on the run

heelsrunning spring style: on the runImage via deviant art from Pinterest

While our freaky Oklahoma weather has put spring on a long snooze this year,  it’s finally time to dig out those sweats and go on that run.

Spring is full of events, races, charity runs and casual weeknight walks. So instead of busting out those baggy sweats for another year, put some pep in your workout wardrobe this year.

You don’t have to spend a fortune to look like that girl at the gym we all envy (perfect makeup and all). If getting excited about your new yoga pants or that pair of running shoes is what it takes, then so be it.

Whether you are a serious runner or casual workout’er like me, adding something stylish and bright to your workout is just the thing for spring.

Color Burst: Our Favorite Spring Colors

PH9 CTS 64 of 17 Color Burst: Our Favorite Spring ColorsSome of our favorite spring colors — Prairie Hive Spring Issue 9

What are your favorite spring colors? For our Spring Issue 9, a few themes came to light — saving space, creative entertaining,  DIYs and, of course, color.

As someone who has been a fan of the Easter egg palette — since birth, really — I couldn’t be happier that color is back in a big way.

This season seems to be replacing last year’s bold brights — aka neon — with hues reminiscent of bright sorbets and sherbets. Think Easter eggs with a bit more saturation. For example, I’m loving the colorful denim that’s in stores right now –it  reminds me of my butter yellow Guess jeans from back in the day. Come on, admit it . You had some of those jeans, too!

In light of all our color love, we each picked our favorite spring colors for our magazine’s Welcome page. So I included our reference photos below for a full perspective.

The lesson: Now is the time to brighten your life with some color, whether you buy a new throw pillow, paint a room, or buy (another) pair of yellow jeans.

Happy (almost) Spring!

Did you watch the Oscars last night–or, shall I say the more important event — the Oscars Red Carpet?

A theme on the red carpet always emerges, and this year it seems to be a style — Art Deco!

An Art-Deco loving Tulsan like myself was thrilled to see some of that glamorous style of Art Deco making it to the red carpet. Perfect example, Jessica Chastain — my personal favorite –in  Armani Prive.

Art Deco style is so present in Tulsa, and we sometimes take the gorgeous architecture for granted. But the style also has translated into beautiful fashion designs.

I was so happy to see this elegant style translated into the most elegant night of the year.

Here are some other favorite Oscar dresses from last night, with a feeling of that distinctive style we so love.

And best accessory definitely goes to Jennifer Garner, wearing a gorgeous Deco-inspired (at least I think it looks Deco-inspired) necklace by Neil Lane. (Her plum Gucci gown isn’t that bad either!)

Work-out Motivation: Keep that Resolution!

We are two weeks into 2013 already.  How are those resolutions holding up?  Did you make a resolution related to eating healthier or working out more?  You are not alone!  If you are like me, it’s hit and miss so far… but a good start.  But I am determined to not let a small lapse or a missed day at the gym make me give up on establishing a better routine.  Soon will be the time of year when most people completely drop their resolutions in these areas.  To keep your motivation going strong, how about try some of these tips.  They appeal to me, at least!

DET Resolution01 Work out Motivation: Keep that Resolution!image via Nike

1.  Gadgets are fun, but even better is seeing the results of your physical fitness efforts!  Try a pedometer or fancy accelerometer like Nike’s FuelBand to track your daily movement and send results right to your smart phone!  Having a count of how many calories you are burning throughout the day has a definitely effect on your momentum and more aware of not only how much you move during the day, but also the kind of foods you consume.  It would be so satisfying to have the number validation literally at your fingertips (or wrist, anyway).

DET Resolution02 Work out Motivation: Keep that Resolution!

2.  New shoes, especially pretty ones like ones offered by New Balance, that are a good fit for your foot type makes running a whole lot more enjoyable.  In Tulsa, you can go to Fleet Feet where they will help you find the best shoe for your body and type of training.  Runners World has great running gear as well.  Both stores have local race schedules and training programs, so you can run in a group of people on your running level (running with others is great motivation to keep going!).

DET Resolution03 Work out Motivation: Keep that Resolution!

3.  Try some fun classes.  If you recently joined a gym, check out the types of classes it offers and what the schedule is for each class that interests you.  My personal favorites at my gym are lunch time yoga class and evening Zumba class.  Zumba is a blast because it gets your heart-rate going AND teaches you some dance moves (and I need all the help I can get in THAT department!).  If you don’t belong to a gym, many locations offer individual classes you can pay as you go. Check your local locations to see if this is an option.  In Tulsa, The Yoga Room offers “drop-in” prices or  smaller packages if you are not ready to drop the money for a full membership.  And Vixen Studio offers fun classes such as Zumba, pole dancing and hip hop dance!

4.  Adorable accessories help make going to the gym a bit more exciting, as well.  Drinking lots of water to stay hydrated is a must.  Who says it can’t be in a super-cute water bottle like this one from Lululemon?

What other things motivate you to keep going when the chilly weather and dark afternoons of winter try to bring you down?

Meet Our Sponsors — Gleeful Peacock

Believe it or not, there’s still time to shop for the holidays! And many of you have already frequented this sponsor’s business that morphed into a store– Gleeful Peacock. We’re featuring our sponsors for our Winter Issue this month, because they help us do what we do! And we wanted to highlight the great things they’re all doing in the Tulsa area.

Nikki Halgren founded her handmade shop, Gleeful Peacock Mercantile, 4240 S. Peoria Ave., as a way to showcase her handmade items, but also as a way to showcase the work of other creative souls in the area. Here’s our Q&A!

Prairie Hive: What inspired you to start Gleeful Peacock?

Nikki: I started Gleeful Peacock as a way to find myself again. I had always been an artist and somewhere in my twenties I lost that part of me. I turned 30 and I wanted to get back to things that made me feel like me. Something that I was passionate about. I decided to start a side business. I picked the name before I even knew what I was going to make. All I knew was that  it would be colorful and happy. I also knew I did not want it to be jewelry! I started the shop Gleeful Peacock Mercantile when the line had outgrown my home. Now I have a full studio space and a fun place to sell my work and the work of other awesome artists!

PH: What’s your specialty?

Nikki: Jewelry.. funnily enough. I focus on colorful pieces that have modern color schemes but with vintage themes and lines. My line is mostly painted, which keeps my artist-self alive and happy. The shop Gleeful Peacock Mercantile specializes in gift items that have meaning or just all around are awesome.

PH: What are your favorite handmade holiday items ?

Nikki: I love anything handmade, but I particularly seem to love items that I can use all the time and therefore get smiles out of daily. Dishtowels, afghans, knitted gloves, or a pretty ceramic dish. As long as it’s colorful, quirky and happy then I enjoy it.

PH: Why are handmade gifts so fun to give and receive?

Nikki: They come with a personality and a soul. Handmade means that no matter what it is, it’s a one-of-a-kind piece. Also, you get that feel good feeling. The one that tells you that you supported a person following their dreams and trying to support their family. How can that not be fun?

PH: What do you like about the Tulsa handmade/crafting community?

Nikki: Tulsa really gets behind small businesses. I have sweet friends in my life because they followed me from when I first started. They came to shows, hosted trunk shows and now they come into the shop. Tulsans love to support each other and they are loyal. I can’t imagine having my business in another place.

Meet Our Sponsors — The Alliday Show

PH Sponsors Alliday1 Meet Our Sponsors The Alliday ShowBriana Hefley Shepard, founder of the Alliday Show/ Image by Dawn Thackray

In addition to featuring our Winter 2012 issue, this month we’re showing our love and appreciation to our sponsors.

Without their support, we’d be a group of women with hundreds (and I mean hundreds) of ideas with limited means to produce them. We appreciate those who are helping us make Prairie Hive the best online design magazine and blog it can be!

So, we wanted to give these sponsors an opportunity to share some insights about their local businesses all month, ergo our first “Meet Our Sponsors” series!

First up is Briana Hefley Shepard, founder of the third annual Alliday Show in Tulsa.

This is one of our favorite local events every year. The show began as a way for local artists and crafters to gather and sell their wares to shoppers hungry for unique, handmade gifts. Since it began, it has exploded and is a must for any discerning gift-giver.

And it’s a great excuse for a girls’ shopping day — beat the lines and traffic and browse through some wonderful vendors.

Not only do you get to meet and support local artisans, crafters and artists — but you also get to knock out a lot of holiday shopping in one place. Can’t beat that!  Be sure to mark your calendars for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 15 — the show is FREE — at the Tulsa Fairgrounds.

For more, check the Alliday website. We’ll see you there!

Here’s our Q&A with Briana:

Prairie Hive: How has the Alliday Show evolved since it debuted several years ago?

Briana: In many ways, the show has changed since the beginning.  First, the event is held in December as opposed to June like when it first started.  We’ve grown from 60 artists to 80-plus artists in addition to several community groups!  Tulsa’s support continues to grow and for that, we are insanely grateful.

PH: What are some highlights shoppers can look forward to at this year’s show?

Briana: We’ll have more artists than ever before and an incredibly wide variety of wares to choose from!  I’ve already begun my shopping list and it just keeps growing!  Also, for the first 50 entrants in the door, we’ll be handing out free tote bags filled with swag from the artists!  And just like our past shows, there are no entry fees!  It’s a great place to finish (or start!) holiday shopping.

PH: How has the craft/handmade community changed in Tulsa over the last several years?

Briana: Gosh, it seems to me that the handmade community has boomed over the past few years!  Not only are more people finding that creative side in themselves but also people in general are embracing and celebrating the handmade movement.  People are seeking out handmade goods more than they were in the recent past.

PH: What has most surprised you since starting the Alliday Show?

Briana: The talent and creativity that our state has to offer. I am constantly amazed at what people can come up with and execute!  It’s refreshing and inspiring.

PH: What’s the value, in your opinion, of buying/receiving a handmade item as a gift?

Briana: I love to have something with a story attached.  Handmade gifts are full of these stories.  Some of my favorite things about buying directly from the artist are seeing their passion, hearing about their creative process and supporting a fellow creative.  You are able to find such personalized, perfect gifts for everyone when shopping handmade; even gifts for those hard-to-shop-for people!

It’s Fall — Bring on the Tights and Gloves

I’m very excited that fall has (sort of) arrived, which means bye-bye bare legs and hello tights and gloves! The ladylike trend in fashion has spawned a more covered-up look in general, but that doesn’t mean bland.

I’m so excited that colorful stockings, tights and hose are everywhere this fall, along with their sophistocated first cousin — the ladylike glove.

Finally, a reason to properly utilize that glove compartment again!

First, let’s talk tights. Fancy stockings in a multitude of colors, fabrics and textures have been hitting the runways and the streets for the past few seasons.

Add an inexpensive pair of tights to a neutral dress, and you’ve got an instant showstopper, like these ombre tights. Or wear them against a bold pattern and you’ve got a really memorable look. If you’re on Pinterest, you have probably seen these ombre tights on many pinboards!

And even the more conservative dresser can wear tights to her full advantage. Paired with a LBD or a business suit, these really add some punch.

Now moving onto my second-favorite fall accessory — the little glove. The runways have been loaded with all sorts of gloves this year — from dainty lace, to full-on leather studded gloves.

Whether you go for Princess Grace or Lady Gaga, and they still look fresh and cool. Happy fall accessorizing!

Boss’s Day Gift Ideas: Happy Boss = Happy Life

homessweetoffice Bosss Day Gift Ideas: Happy Boss = Happy LifeImage via Etsy

Did you remember that it’s Boss’s Day this Tuesday?

Nope, me neither. I guess I’m a lousy subordinate. But thanks to Dawn, I was reminded just in time to get my professional ducks in a row.

You don’t want to forget your hard-working boss, no matter what your current work situation. I’ll just leave it at that! No matter if your boss is a close friend, or an acquaintance at best — Boss’s Day is the day to show your appreciation.

The classic way is, of course, with flowers or candies. That’s an easy way to show you care (and a great last-minute option). But if you’re up for a raise or promotion, getting creative just might win you those all-important brownie points you need.

Now is the tricky part — what to buy and how much to spend? The answer is: It depends entirely on your situation, and your boss.

It’s a wrap. Thoughtful gifts always score big points, and if you work in a large office space, you’ll know where I’m going with this. Climate control is always a frustrating experience, especially here in Oklahoma. It could be 107 degrees outside, and 45 inside, thanks to the know-it-all in control of the AC.

If your female boss is professional and chic, then a smart wrap or pashmina can can travel with her from meeting to office to airplane. She’ll give you a big bonus if it’s cashmere!

Peaceful travels. Too many times, bad business traveling experiences can make for a cranky boss. For the busy career woman on the go, the problem is always packing and luggage, especially the ever-annoying laptop or computer bag. With two ‘personal’ items allowed on a plane, that means you often have to pick between a purse or the laptop bag. Why not combine? This Samsonite bag is durable, great-looking and full of pockets and compartments. And it includes a laptop sleeve to protect your hardware.

Funny and frugal. So you don’t have $50 to spend on your boss, but you still want to be appreciative. No biggie. You can get her something cute and clever — like his cozy. It helps build her self-esteem and keep her morning Joe piping hot — a good thing to be associated with!

Chocolate saves all. If you don’t quite know your boss so well, or are afraid of coming off overly personal, you cannot beat some good, old-fashioned chocolate. Pair it with a sense of humor, and you’re golden. These Chocolate-Caramel Dominoes are fun, not overly familiar (you don’t want to make these sweets feel like they’re for your sweetheart!), and they look like you put a lot of thought into your choice.

Manly travels. Just like with female bosses, men can have a tough time keeping it together on the road. If you’re friendly with your boss, and he’s a bit of a Renaissance man, he’ll appreciate a leather shave kit from Fossil. This one is manly-man approved; I got it for the husband for his last birthday. It has just enough room to hold all of his travel items, and the leather smell is oh-so-masculine.

woodbowtie1 Bosss Day Gift Ideas: Happy Boss = Happy Life

Hipster boss. Once in a while, even the oh-so-with-it hip boss needs to be impressed. This is perfect for your stylish male boss. Nothing says cool like blending a big trend — bow ties — with an unusual texture, like in this wooden bow tie. This is perfect for that ‘guy who has everything,’ and a unique conversation piece he can wear or display on his desk. Warning — this gift is NOT for the Polo-shirt-plus-khakis kind of guy. He might think you need a vacation if you give him this!

Have a happy Boss’s Day!

Home Friendly Pet Accessories

I love to design new cat hotels, dog beds and pet toys in my head but I never seem to implement any of my ideas. While searching for some pet solutions that won’t turn my house into a primary color mess, I bookmarked a few things to share.

Why is it that widely available children and pet toys and necessities just don’t seem to have much style? Has anyone else found a great source for outfitting our furry friends with panache? Please share.

I know I’ve included a couple of colorful toys here, but in the right home they’ll fit right in. Modern furniture, white walls and neutral floors can handle a little color. It’s probably best to stick with just one though. Color, that is. If your home is already colorful, try to keep with natural colors and textures so they will blend in and not steal attention from your decor.

RD083112Pets Home Friendly Pet Accessories

1. Tug and Toss Dog Toy at Patina Stores. I love this tomato red right now! I think it’s just the right color to celebrate the last few days of color and if your into seasonal decorating, it could lead you right into fall.

2. Anderson Unleashed Life Dining Dog Bowls at Modern Tails. So pretty, you’d almost want to use that canister for cookies instead of dog treats.

3. Coco the Elephant at Jax and Bones. Is this guy cute? I’m not sure, but I really like him and of course he’s grey so that’s always a plus.

4. Mazee – Perplexus for Dogs at Think Geek. I’m pretty sure I’m going to buy this soon. Parting with $16 for puppy entertainment is a no brainer. Eddie (the one-year-old who thinks he’s still a little puppy) has a crazy run around energy fest around 8:00 every night. Just when I’m ready to wind down, or try anyway.

5. Felted Cat Bed at elevele. My cat would love this! And it looks so much better than the cardboard box lid he adopted and napped in for months. I just couldn’t bring myself to take it away.

6. fishhotel by Umbra. We’re not much of a fish family (for pets anyway) but this fish hotel is great. They stack, you could have a whole apartment complex of fish residents. So cool!

7. Wiltshire Pet Bed at Modern Tails. Simple, but sweet and geometrics never get old (well some do). This bed could easily live in a traditional or eclectic home.

8. BowHaus Modern Dog Furniture from Denhaus. I’ve been eyeing this for years it seems (not sure if it’s been out for years, but maybe). I think this would make a perfect side table for my side of the sofa. Although I haven’t figured out if Eddie or Jersey (the cat) would end up winning the battle and making this their new home.

Late Summer Blooms: Inspiration from Grocery Store to Olympics

flowersbirds1 Late Summer Blooms: Inspiration from Grocery Store to Olympics

Last weekend, amid a broken-air-conditioning meltdown,  my husband cheered me up in a major way by bringing home these beauties — from the grocery store. I peeked at the price tag (come on, we all do it), and I was stunned.

Fifteen or so roses for $15! That’s the real beauty of grocery store blooms. When you find value like this, you go for it. That’s why I love a good floral bargain.

Besides the quality, this bouquet immediately stands out because the colors are really stunning: Burnt orange, bright yellow, red and fuchsia. The bouquet looks like a late-summer sunset.

flowersmedium Late Summer Blooms: Inspiration from Grocery Store to Olympics

And, after obsessing over the Olympics this weekend — officially crushing on gold medal-winning swimmer Ryan Lochte, btw — I noticed that the official Olympic bouquets are comprised of  wildflowers and traditional English roses, in similar colors, yellow, orange and pink! Coincidence, I think not.

Even if you’re not a traditional roses kind of girl, you can take the colors of late summer and run with them.

As a natural transition from spring’s tangerines, turquoises and pale yellows — as we showcased in our Issue Six Celebrate the Style party — you can use the same color palette to transition into burnt orange, maize yellow and dark pinks.

Here are some inspirations from my beautiful summer bouquet.
