Fall Prep: Colorful Autumn Style

prep1 Fall Prep: Colorful Autumn StyleImage via Forever 21 from Pinterest

I was definitely missing the prep gene in high school.

While all my classmates were wearing penny loafers and Polo shirts, I was hopelessly addicted to Contempo Casuals (remember that store? It was awesome).

But now in my 30s, I aspire to be Blair Waldorf. What’s the deal? Sure, I may watch too much Gossip Girl, but preppy style has has never been so smart.

Fall’s preps are updated and polished. Fun colorblocking meets buttoned-up blazers.

And stripes! Don’t even get me started.

I was in Washington, D.C for a week recently, and I couldn’t help but notice all the great preppy style going on. Yes, D.C. is the Preppy Mothership — I saw people wearing suits at a barbecue restaurant — but the casual, weekend style was really interesting to me.

The girls there were rocking pea coats, colorful skinny jeans, J Crew sweaters, and of course, stripes and cute crossbody bags. And monogrammed jewelry, charm bracelets and exaggerated necklaces finished the looks perfectly.

So I’m a total prep now — who knew? My high school self would be horrified!

Here are some uber- preppy looks:

Trendspotting: Triangles

Could triangles be the new chevron?  (Please?  Chevron is cute and all, but is anyone else OVER IT?)

From isosceles to acute, these geometry staples are showing up everywhere – including wall treatments to fabrics to jewelry.  The patterns range from regular to random, both equally fresh.  Some inspiration, and some of my favorite product picks:

As much as I adore traditional red and green, this year it’s all about metallics.  In addition to the glam factor, I love it because it’s a great way to add holiday sparkle and spirit to your home  - without needing to rework your entire living room around reds, greens and santas.  Metallics can look modern or traditional (or a bit of both), and can be just as dramatic as holiday brights.  I’ve rounded up a few great examples of metallic vignettes, as well as some of my favorite products within the trend!

Elephants are the new Birds

Maybe it’s one too many Portlandia references, but I am so over the “put a bird on it” trend.  It was fun while it lasted, but it’s time to move on.  Have you noticed all the elephants starting to march into interiors, fashion, products, and more?

Elephants are definitely popular on the nursery scene (I’ve spent a fair amount of time browsing this new room category lately) – here’s one of my favorite examples of mixing patterns, colors and types to keep a theme present without getting too matchy (the number one sin in nurseries, in my opinion).

Since elephants are a symbol of wisdom and luck, I love them as a design element.  Plus, how cute are their babies (watch this)?  As a tribute, I rounded up some of my favorite olifant items:

Donuts are the new Cupcakes

Maybe it’s because I’ve never been a big cupcake fan – all that icing and cutesy sweetness – but have you noticed that donuts are popping up everywhere these days as the new go-to dessert?

I’ve been thinking on this post for a while, but decided what better time to put it out there than right before our Booksmart Tulsa: Flour Bakery + Cafe event.  There are some fantastic looking recipes in Joanne Chang’s cookbook for eclairs, donuts and the like… (however, I will point out that her bakery also makes cupcakes).

A quick browse through a few wedding blogs and you’ll notice donuts are the new “unexpected” dessert food for receptions and showers – whether as a tableside snack, in place of a cake, or as a late night party treat.

I am personally in love with the donut trucks that have shown up in a few towns.  Carpe Donut, in Charlottesville, VA travels to weddings, events, concerts, etc. to serve up organic and delicious looking snacks to locals.  Can someone please get on board for this in Tulsa?  Seriously.

You can even incorporate your love of donuts into your home decor…

All this donut talk prompted me to visit two of my favorite donut shops last week.  The Donut Whole in Wichita, KS is a fun little indie joint open 24 hours, serving inventive flavors such as (pictured below): Fruity Pebbles, Pistachio, Peach Cobbler, Cherry Chocolate, Rice Krispie Treat, Caramel Sea Salt, Red Velvet and S’mores.  The flavors change daily and seasonally, so stop in if you happen to be in Wichita.

And here in Tulsa, everyone’s favorite spot is OK Country Donut Shoppe, where you can pick up yummy iced treats in almost any shape imaginable.  See what’s in the case (here was my pick from Friday) or special order your favorite shapes, spell out Happy Birthday or even a name.  Let’s see…think I could eat V-E-S-P-A-S-I-A-N?  Probably, considering two of us did a pretty good job taking down what’s shown below, no kids in sight.

And finally, if you’re a cupcake purist or just can’t make up your mind – you could always try something like this…happy snacking!

I may be a bit biased, but for pops of color in a neutral room, yellow is becoming the go-to color around here.  From large swaths of sunshiny brights to punchy accessories, it’s everywhere these days!

Just as the ubiquitous “Keep Calm and Carry On” print has popped up for the last several years in any and all formats imaginable, it seems that the “For Like, Ever” print (first published in Domino in 2006) is showing up more and more these days.  With more limited print editions and fewer color changes, I hope to see it stay a little more exclusive (although it does have it’s own Facebook page).  If you love either or both, more power to you…Carry On.  However, if you want a fresher take on the typography trend, here are a few ideas:

Right as we had started to work on the Prairie Hive concept and logo,  I ran across this image over at designlovefest.  Maybe it’s just because I’ve got “hive” on the brain a little more than usual these days, but I can’t help but notice honeycomb patterns popping up everywhere. While I’m as big of an Ikat fan as they come, I can’t help wondering if we’re going to see a beehive takeover!!
