Ask Us April – TV to Reality: Don Draper’s Apt, Mad Men

 ”Dear Prairie Hive,

I love Don Draper’s new apartment on the show Mad Men.  What would be your suggestions for getting a similar look and feel in my living room?

Janice B.”

We immediately agreed that Don Draper’s apartment was worthy of a TV to Reality post.  I mean, check out his living room in his new apartment……

It is mid century modern heaven!

The LA Times blog did a great post with information on some of the furniture.  If you want more details be sure and read the article here.

At first glance, I thought this would be no biggy, but boy was I wrong!  Here’s the issue…mid century modern furniture is still available, but you have to be ready to search for the original/classic pieces.  Once found you have to get over the immediate sticker shock that you will most likely experience!  With that said, you can still stumble on to pieces for a great price, but more than likely you will be searching long and hard for those deals.  Ebay and Craigslist, as well as local retro furniture shops (for Tulsans, Mod50′s Modern and The Retro Den are great places to check out), can be your best friend if you want the originals.

Here are a couple of the original pieces that you will find in Mr. Don Draper’s living room…

Here is my take on Don Draper’s living room….

collage Ask Us April TV to Reality: Don Drapers Apt, Mad Men

With this type of room you have to be willing to search high and low for the right pieces – or something that will work in their place.  The sectional in the set was a custom built piece of furniture.  I found one from Room & Board that has very similar lines and I think works well (love the button tufting on the seat cushions).  However, if you aren’t up for the almost $4,000 price tag, you could also go with this IKEA KARLSTAD sectional for around $1,000 while you save your pennies.  Obviously it isn’t nearly as fabulous but you do have the same overall clean lines and low profile.  You do what you can on your budget!

I was able to find some stools on ebay, but didn’t have much luck with the lounge chair, so I found another option on Ebay as well.  And they are still available if you feel like putting a bid on them!

The retro Fabricut fabric is the actual pattern and color that is in his apartment.  I happen to have a good friend that works at Fabricut and she filled me in!  Be sure and include a valance with those drapes…

With the majority of the apartment being various shades of brown, the simple solid color pillows on the couch add just the right amount of interest without being too much.  Crate and Barrel is always a good standby for those.

The purple hanging light fixture is a Craigslist find.  It has a similar shape and feel to Mr. Draper’s cool fixture.  If only it was striped.  Again…this is the type of thing that you keep your eye out for and you will find something equally as cool!

Here are the sources for my picks:

1.  Crate and Barrel, Brinkley Pillows

2.  Ebay, Erik Buck Teak Danish Modern Counter Stools

3.  Ebay, Fredrik Kayser Vatne Mobler Black Leather Lounge Chair Mid Century Danish Modern

4.  Craigslist, Vintage Purple Hanging Light

5.  Allmodern.com, Arteriors Home Ike Cocktail Table

6.  Room & Board, Reese Sectional

TV to Reality – Gossip Girl’s Humphrey Loft

I have to be honest.  I don’t watch Gossip Girl, but I love this loft!  I saw the top photo first on Pinterest (no surprise), but it wasn’t until I started looking for great TV sets that I stumbled upon it’s origin on the Christina Tonkin Interiors Blog.  Christina Tonkin is a very talented designer that has done work for Gossip Girls, Sex and the City, and others.

So…here are a couple of photos of the Humphrey Loft….

There are so many aspects of this loft that I love.  For starters, the exposed brick walls, the hard surface floors which look to be either sealed concrete or terrazzo.  The combination of oriental rugs and modern pieces of furniture.  Don’t even get me started about the huge, beautiful doors and windows!

I have pulled together some different pieces that you could use in your own home to create this comfortable, laid back, eclectic look.

T.V. to Reality – Modern Family, The Dunfy House

So it’s that time again – when T.V. gets good.  So many new shows to get hooked on.  So many existing shows that I have followed for years, but now don’t really care about anymore, yet I feel almost guilty for not watching.

Anyways, one of my favorites is ABC’s Modern Family.  It makes me laugh every time!  I love all the different family dynamics and how they all interact together.

I also love all their different homes.  So, for this T.V. to Reality, I am going to show you how to get the comfortable Dunfy family room look.

This is a great family room because it is open to the kitchen area as well.  Perfect for interacting while cooking dinner and doing homework.

As far as their style goes, it’s a mix match.  It looks like a home that has been collected over time….my favorite kind!  They have a nice balance of neutral pieces (couch and rug) with pops of color (throws and tray).  Combining different patterns (stripes and medallions) add to the laid back, comfortable feel.

TV to Reality – Two and a Half Men

AB%20 %20two%20living TV to Reality Two and a Half Menimage from www.setdecor.com

I catch myself watching reruns of Two and a Half Men late at night.  Not sure why, I don’t watch it any other time, but it seems to be an easy, mindless show to fall asleep to.

It also happens to be the best looking bachelor pad that I have seen!  I mean, it has a super relaxed and comfortable atmosphere.  It’s a place that I can see myself walking into, propping my feet up and feeling right at home.

You won’t find any of the stereotypical chrome and black leather here.  Instead there are lots of warm neutrals, beautiful wood, and just the right amount of accessories to make it feel like home without being too cluttered.

So, here are some pieces that I have found that would allow you to recreate that same feel in your own space….

Let’s start with the big, comfy couch that is the center of the space.  I think I actually found the same couch!  This is the Carlisle Upholstered sofa from Pottery Barn.  The turned arms and deep, double cushions scream comfort.

AB%20 %20two%20sofa TV to Reality Two and a Half Menimage from Pottery Barn

The side chair that I found, from Pier 1, is a great rattan and woven banana bark chair.   With a simple natural seat cushion and a couple of throw pillows you will get the same great look for a fabulous price of only $179.99 (on sale from $199.99).

AB%20 %20two%20pier1%20chair TV to Reality Two and a Half Men image from Pier 1

The striped rug has subtle colors that compliment all the warm neutrals.  This rug is from Treo Modern.  The stripes aren’t quite as wide as the inspiration rug, but they are large enough, and in similar colors, so we get the same feel.

Now, onto what might be might favorite piece of furniture….that great ottoman!  Unfortunately I couldn’t find one with that fabulous pattern, but I did find this one from West Elm that fits in perfectly with the other colors in the space.  I love the size of it and the fact that it can double as a coffee table or extra seating…very versatile!

Now, finish everything off with some great pillows that are from repurposed vintage cotton saris like these from West Elm, and you will be set!

T.V. to Reality – Brothers and Sisters

AB%20 %20brothers1 T.V. to Reality Brothers and Sisters

Nora Walker’s kitchen.  Just beautiful.  If you are familiar with the T.V. show Brothers and Sisters, then you are probably familiar with this kitchen.  In many episodes, it is the hub of activity.  From family fights to heartfelt family discussions, the kitchen is where people gather.  And that proably goes for both the Walker’s and your own family!

AB%20 %20brothers2 T.V. to Reality Brothers and Sisters

Let’s see how we can get a similar look and feel.

Wood floor in the kitchen.  There are so many different ways to get this look depending on what your budget allows.  Here are some options:

Harwood FloorsAB%20 %20brothers%20wood1 T.V. to Reality Brothers and Sisters

image via Armstrong

There are many different species, plank sizes, and finishes to select from.  Hardwood is solid wood that can be sanded and refinished many times, years down the road.  To read more information about hard wood read this from Armstrong.

Engineered Hardwood Floors

AB%20 %20brothers%20wood2 T.V. to Reality Brothers and Sisters

image via Armstrong

Engineered hardwood floors are wood as well.  The image above shows the difference from hardwood really well.  Engineered hardwoods are made up of multiple layers of wood.  This layering gives the wood floor great stability, meaning it doesn’t shrink and expand as much with temperature changes.  To read more information about engineered hardwood floors read this from Armstrong.

Laminate Wood Floors

AB%20 %20brothers%20wood3 T.V. to Reality Brothers and Sisters

image via Armstrong

Laminate flooring is made up of four layers.  With the design layer {layer #2} being an actual photographic image of wood.  So, you get the look of wood with a much less expensive price tag.  For more information on laminate flooring read this from Armstrong.

Vinyl Wood Flooring

Vinyl flooring is available in sheets, tiles, and planks.  This is another less expensive way to get a wood look.

With the laminate wood floor and vinyl wood floor, do your research.  There are many of these products that are great looking, but there are also a ton of these products that aren’t great looking!  There are lots of different manufacturer’s, so you have many to choose from.

Tile Wood Flooring

AB%20 %20brothers%20wood4 T.V. to Reality Brothers and Sisters

image via American Olean

Another great is a porcelain tile that looks like wood.  Yep, they have porcelain tile that is cut into “plank” sizes and everything!  They are beautiful products!  The photo above is the Terreno Collection from American Olean.  I caution you though….the tile products can be as expensive as hardwood, but you don’t have to worry about water damage and such.  The newly redone Starbucks at Utica Square has a tile wood plank floor installed.  Not sure what manufacturer it is, but you can see what it looks like.

Moving on…..the white cabinetry in Nora’s kitchen is a beautiful contrast to the dark wood floors.  If you are wanting this look, but don’t want to purchase new cabinets, paint the ones you already have!  This can be a relatively easy and inexpensive project that will completely change the look of your kitchen.

The backsplash is a simple and classic glossy cream/white subway tile.  I love this look!

The counter tops around the perimeter of the kitchen look like they are the same glossy cream/white tile, that match the backsplash.  If you don’t want tile for a counter {think about the grout lines}, you could do a granite that looks like white carrarra marble.

AB%20 %20brothers%20granite1 T.V. to Reality Brothers and Sisters

 image via Ruby Jewel Studio

Some other options for a similar look would be a solid surface such as Corian or a quartz product such as Zodiaq.  Zodiaq actually has a color called, “Bianco Carrara”.  I have Zodiaq counters in my kitchen and love them.  They are super durable…I can take a pan out of the oven and set it directly on the counter and not worry.

The amazing center island looks like it has a wood top.  Beautiful.  If you wanted something other than wood, you could go with a stained concrete counter.  Just choose a rich brown stain.

The walls are covered in what looks like a grass cloth wallpaper in a warm, light yellow color.  The grass cloth look provides a nice, subtle texture.  If the idea of grass cloth in a kitchen scares you, think about a vinyl wallcovering that looks like grass cloth.  This will allow you to scrub the heck out of it and it is super durable!

Around the kitchen they have used blue and white plates and canisters, along with clear vases, and lots of fresh fruit and flowers to accessorize.  Here are some contemporary blue and white dishes, from West Elm, that would look great.

AB%20 %20brothers%20dishes1 T.V. to Reality Brothers and Sisters

For a more traditional look, Dillards has a great Ralph Lauren set of of china called “Mandarin Blue”.

And for clear vases to fill, Pottery Barn has got some great ones!  You might also check your local Ross, TJ Maxx, and Marshall’s.  They almost always have great deals on clear glass vases and canisters.

And finally, let’s take a look at her fabulous commercial style stainless steel kitchen appliances!  You can read an interview with Denny Dugally, the production designer, & Bryan Venegas, the set decorator, on the Sub-Zero website here.  From a huge refrigerator, double gas stove and oven combination, and wine cooler, Nora Walker is ready to prepare any sized meal!

Well, I’m ready for a kitchen makeover….how about you?

Ahhh…that beautiful blue sofa.  Ever since Sex and the City 2 came out last year I have been in love with this sofa.  There is just something about the deep, saturated hue that makes me want to lounge in a beautiful cocktail dress on it {let’s be real, curl up in some extra comfy sweat pants}.  So, you will understand my excitement when I was strolling through our Dillard’s furniture department and spotted this….

AB%20 %20sex2%20couch Movie to Reality Sex and the City 2

Granted, it’s not exact but the $899 price tag is MUCH more affordable than the original $4,000!  With the same boxy shape, tall arms, and blue color you get the same great feel at a realistic price.

AB%20 %20sex2%20pillow Movie to Reality Sex and the City 2

A couple of these silver pillows from West Elm will give just the right amount of  shimmer and light reflectance.

Let’s talk about that fabulous large yellow canvas above the sofa.  I have searched and searched for something similar, but haven’t really found anything.  I am thinking that you might be able to recreate it.  Think large square canvas, white and rich yellow paint with a gold or bronze glaze over it and a thin black trim.  I think it could be done!

Now, if only I had a room to place all of this in……

What T.V. or movie sets are you drawn to?

T.V. to Reality – Better With You

Lately I find myself watching a couple episodes of random T.V. shows.  “Better with You”, on ABC, is one of the more recent ones.  I love Maddie & Ben’s apartment set!  The thing that initially caught my eye, not sure how, is the suzani fabric that is on a chair located behind the sofa and white lamp in the first picture.  Unfortunately I couldn’t find a better photo that showed the chair.  I love this fabric!  I have been trying to use it in different residential projects, but it hasn’t happened yet.  Anyways, when I caught a glimpse of it on the T.V. show I was excited.  Yes, I get excited about random things like that.  After spotting the fabric I started looking at the other furniture and accessories.  I realized that I really liked the combination of sleek, modern pieces with more rustic and eclectic items.  Let’s get started with the re-creation!

The fabric I am in love with!  Great colors and unique design make this fabric a definite statement piece.  It’s a little hard to tell, but the tan areas are actually three dimensional.  It is available here in Tulsa at Calico Corners, Interior Fabrics, and Decorator Fabric Showcase.  Probably others as well, but I have personally seen it at those stores.  This would look great on a simple slipper chair.  Another way to bring in this great pattern would be with this rug from Z. Gallerie that has the same pattern.  Beautiful!

This great Raw Wood Side Table from West Elm provides a nice rustic touch to the sleek couch.  At $199 it makes me want to get a little creative and find a good wood stump {think ice storm debris}, shave the bark off and voila….you would have a great raw wood side table for nada!

I also couldn’t help but notice some of the quirky accessories around the apartment – I found this vintage green owl on Etsy, if you love owls – you should definitely check out this shop, or find a bright accessory that suits your own personality!

And finally, an accessory combo – the modern white lamp on their side table and the white tree on the bookcase both caught my eye, so when I saw this lamp from West Elm, it was the perfect marriage of both.

Kind of like the couple on the TV show, right?

T.V. to Reality

Have you caught any episodes of ABC’s Mr. Sunshine on Wednesday nights?  I have a seen a few, and each time Crystal Cohen’s {actress Allison Janney} office catches my eye.  I love the color combo and the quirky feel.  I decided to look it up online and see what I could find.  Low and behold David A. Keeps, with the Los Angeles Times, wrote this great article on the set designs for both the home and office of Crystal Cohen.  As you will read in his article, he gives many of the sources for the office.  I thought it might be interesting to see if I could find similar objects that might be less expensive, but still have the same feel.

To start with, here is a photo of the office

Let’s start with the chairs.  LOVE them!  This is a great contemporary take on your traditional arm chair.  The Duralee fabric is designed by Thomas Paul.  It can be found here in Tulsa at Calico Corners, Interior Fabrics, and I am sure other fabric stores as well {I have personally drooled over it at the afore mentioned stores}.  In trying to keep down the costs, I would suggest definitely sticking with the fabric and using it to reupholster chairs that you already have or chairs that you find at an estate sale or in the clearance section at a local furniture store.  OR you can buy this adorable slipper chair from Target online for a mere $224.99!

AB%20 %20mr.%20sunshine%20chair T.V. to Reality

Next let’s take a look at the white bookcases on the back wall.  They are a great display space with glass doors.  I am an admitted IKEA junky, so my mind automatically goes to the EXPEDIT bookcases…those don’t have large glass door options…so next in line is the HEMNES glass door cabinet for $325.

AB%20 %20mr.%20sunshine%20ikea%20hemnes%20glass%20door%20cab%20325 T.V. to Reality

To fill those shelves with the bright orange and blue accessories I would head over to our local IO Metro store, Target, or Ross and see what I could find.  IO Metro has beautiful accessories in vibrant colors that are super afordable.  And you would be surprised at what you can find in the vase section at Ross!

Round mirrors are pretty popular these days.  I found this one at Pier 1 for $149.99.

No, it’s not exact, but it’s large and round and has great gold accents that makes it a great focal point in between those two blue lamps.  Those are great!  The actual ones cost about $200 a piece.  Which honestly I understand why….look how tall they are!  But, I did find a pretty good substitution from Crate and Barrel for $59.95.

AB%20 %20mr.%20sunshine%20c%20and%20b%20sadie%20surf%20table%20lamp%2059.95 T.V. to Reality

Doesn’t have the same fun shape, but the color is there so I think it would do.  Especially since it’s a fraction of the original’s cost!

For the additional two chairs I would scower craigslist, etsy, and local antique shops to find a couple of old chairs that have a similar round back.  Then, I would spray paint the wood parts gold and find a great orange fabric and have them reupholstered.

The carpet in the office is from Interface FLOR.  They used two different colors of carpet tile to create a blocky pattern.  I love carpet tiles.  Working in the commercial Interior Design field, I specify similar ones all the time.  Check out the website and see all the different patterns and colors that they have….you can get super creative!

Finally, the wall color is Benjamin Moore Cool Aqua.  It’s a great backdrop for the office and allows the furniture and accessories to really stand out…..without being a bland neutral.  Blue and orange are complimentary colors, so they will always look great together!

The charm of this office is that it mixes traditional pieces with more contemporary colors and patterns.

Next time you see a room that you love in a magazine, on T.V., or in a movie, think about doing some research and making it work in your space with your budget!
