With the weather cooling off, I can’t help but start thinking about the condition my fireplace. It’s terrible, people. Ugly, untouched and what has always been one of my least favorite parts of my current home. So this falls obsession: coming up with a way to fix it up a bit, without undertaking a massive (or expensive) renovation. So I thought I’d share a few of my inspirations for my own modern fireplace makeover.
Sure, I could start throwing out inspiration images like these:

But let’s get real. That’s not happening anytime soon, not in this house anyway! Instead I’ve gathered a group of attainable ideas (or some to steal bits and pieces from) that I hope to make happen before the end of the month…just in time to hang stockings!

In this room, I love the verticality – making the fireplace standout in a small space. My space is tiny as well, so without installing stone, I’m thinking painting the space straight up from the fireplace in a contrasting color.

This Mantle is fantastic in lots of ways, but my takeaway is the clean wood plank as a mantle. Simple, floating, no ornamentation. There’s no mantle at all in my space, but this would be easy to add.

I love everything about this, but again, the simple mantle is so great. Im a sucker for driftwood as well, but also the idea of a solitary item floating above, rather than a styled collection of objects. The area around my fireplace is busy (bookshelves, tv armoire) so I’d like to keep it simple.

The angle on this one is what caught my eye, since I’m planning to paint in my architecture, it would be easy to add a gentle slope for more interest.
So now, the clock is ticking. I’m going to channel my inner weekend warrior and get this done before the holidays. I’ll report back here with my “After”!
