Scarves as Wall Art – Current Attractions

Wallflower Scarf from Orla Kiely

I have always loved scarves and fabric as wall art, hanging sarongs gathered from mine and my sisters travels way back in college. I’ve been taking a new interest in scarves since designing a young girl’s bedroom with an exotic flair and would love to pick up some new ones for my own collection. I have just the place for the Orla Kiely Wallflower Scarf above. Isn’t it beautiful?

It is so inspirational I immediately knew what I wanted to pair with it, so I set out to find just the right amount of gold, black and white. Yes, I’m still stuck on metal accents. I don’t think it’s going away any time soon since it started about 8 or 9 years ago and I just keep on thinking of more things to paint gold!

FLOS Spun Table Lamp from Utility Design

This was exactly the mix of mid-century style and Hollywood glam for me. Who could pass up an ultra shiny black lamp with such great lines as this one? The room I’m imagining is a sitting room off an entry, a casual place that doubles its use as my library and where I savor a cup of tea and catch up with friends. It needs to have some glamour I think.

Gold Leaf Round Table from One Kings Lane

I think I have a weakness for round, shiny side tables. I found about ten round, gold tables that I liked and finally chose this one because it is feminine without being over the top and simple and clean.  When in doubt simple and clean often win at my house, because they will blend more seamlessly with multiple styles in an eclectic space without cluttering.

I know that was short and sweet, but I’ve been having a slow computer (they say slow as molasses, but I think i could have poured out 5 jars of the stuff in the 1 hour and 9 minutes it took to load the PH site today). Needless to say I have much more to add, like this Modern Classic Leather Bench from Modern Classic Home and Furniture. But my patience is thin and now there is not enough time to watch this beast of a computer think before I must leave for work. As they say, I’ll be back icon smile Scarves as Wall Art Current Attractions

Current Attractions – Pendleton Blankets

Ever since reading Elliot’s post on Monday I’ve been wanting to curl up under a Pendleton blanket.  I picked this Eagle  Rock Saddle Blanket to build my Current Attractions board around today.  Not entirely sure why, it is quite a stretch from my usual taste, but I think I must still be inspired by our Issue 3 location and Get Crafty project.  Plus the colors are warm and fun.

Current Attractions – Sunhat

RDCALaborDay Current Attractions Sunhat

  1. Avery Clear Earring from Shabby Apple – Every outfit needs just a little shine, something to catch the light and throw a little reflection around.  These simple danglers are versatile and fun for lots of occasions.
  2. Sunhat from Village Hat Shop – I love donning a large hat on the holidays, making a refreshing beverage, and grabbing a fascinating book or some good company and relaxing the day away outside.  This open weave hat will stay nice and cool all day and protect your face, neck and shoulders.
  3. Boho Chic Bag from Handmade by Perla on Etsy – To be honest, I’d love this little bag in gray linen with that soft leather woven in.  But I picked it because my bags rarely coordinate with my outfit, unless I’m planning a specific ensemble for an event.  Usually I grab the one that suits my contents and mood and off I go.
  4. Polar Lake Slip-on Shoes from Orvis – I think I’ve purchased and worn out several pairs of shoes like this so they are always a good investment.
  5. Layered Tank Dress from Loft – Just something quick, easy and cool.  It’s pretty hard to find clothes appropriate for this weather after all the retailers put out their fall lines.  After all, it’s only 103 degrees outside today, but a good reason to shop end of season sales I suppose!
  6. Multi-Colored Cuff from Madrigal Embroidery on Etsy – If you always add a little shine, you might always add a little texture too.  This splash of color and textures keeps things interesting and puts a little art in your day.

I know I listed this under fashion, but really, I’m no fashionista!  As you can see I just like to be comfortable and ready for any adventure that may come my way.  I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday weekend and don’t forget to take a few minutes to enter the giveaway happening this week.

Current Attractions – Good Weather Relaxation

Mixing it up this time around, I thought I would use my next read as my inspiration for good weather relaxation in the back yard.  I just came in from checking on my (remarkably still alive) tomato plants and the air feels amazing!  My favorite thing about these fall-feeling nights is that we still get the summer sun late into the evening, but no heat and little humidity.  I can feel my yard breathing a sigh of relief along with me after all those 110 degree days.

While I would usually lounge outside discussing the week with my boyfriend over a glass or two of wine, sometimes he is working and it’s just me and the collies hanging out.  I love reading outside and while at a recent dinner party was recommended The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society when my new acquaintance discovered I loved historical fiction too.

Since I’ve yet to read the book, I based my inspirational finds on how I would like to feel while reading.  So my idea is a quick and easy mini retreat for any day of the week.  I love to take advantage of the long lasting sun, so the less preparation to enjoy, the better.  All of the non-weather friendly items can stack in a basket, ready to grab on the way out the door (with the exception of cold beverages of course).

1., 2. and 3. Orkney American Sham from Rough Linen, Vintage Blossom Persimmon Pillow from DwellStudio, and Flowering Gum and Lace Fans Cushion Cover from Ink & Spindle – Lots of pillows for comfort and support in the hammock in colors to coordinate with my patio.

4. Thatched Market Umbrella from World Market – Adds to my mini-vacation vibe and helps to control the late western sun rays if needed.

5. Galleria Folding Table from Arboria – Holds my refreshments and snacks (and my book when I start to daydream). Also does double duty as extra table space when having guests over.

6. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society – The inspiration.  Hopefully a new read that will take me back in time to learn the trials and successes of those in another generation.

7. Works Special Edition Quilt in Bone/Snow from Denyse Schmidt – I picture the women of the potato peel society as those that might appreciate the warmth and comfort offered from a stitched quilt.  Also, the simplicity of this quilt couldn’t be passed up, perfect cotton softness for making the hammock extra comfy.

8. Watermark Cool Springs Hammock and Stand from Hatteras Hammocks – My island that allows me to escape for short periods of time.

9. Wicker Stationery from Orange Beautiful – I often use any piece of paper handy to mark my book pages, but think a note card like this would be just the thing for jotting down thoughts and ideas while reading outside.  I wouldn’t have to remember to find my notebook, or more likely have to run back inside after getting settled in my hammock!

10. My own simple smoothie.  My current summer favorite is to combine 1/2 cup rice milk, one large handful of baby spinach, 1/2 frozen banana and 1 frozen white peach.  Blend until smooth and enjoy, tastes just like an Orange Julius!

11. Moroccan Tea Glasses from Viva Terra – Just couldn’t resist.

I’m sure as the sun slips away I’ll stay put and admire my magical decorations from earlier this year. Those string lights distract me from the lack of stars in our city sky.  Although I do have a wonderful view of the moon and the local Driller’s fireworks from my backyard, so I’m certainly not complaining!

Current Attractions – Garden Deva Art

For those of you in the Tulsa and surrounding area, you may already be familiar with the Garden Deva and her wonderful art sculpture.  I am currently lucky enough to be watching a piece very similar to the one above for a friend until he finds a new home for it.  So this is my current attraction for my outdoor patio and these are some of the items I found to surround it.

RDCAGardenDeva%20copy Current Attractions Garden Deva Art

1. Gingko Fabric from Ink & Spindle – To be used as decorative pillows for the bench and chairs, hopefully paired with solid coordinating seat covers.

2. Flowering Gum Fabric from Ink & Spindle – Also fun pillows and possibly a long box cushion to cover the coffee table/ foot rest (see 5)

3. & 4. Teak Banana Furniture from Java Furniture

5. Ventura Bunching Tables from Crate and Barrel – For a versatile coffee table/ foot rest and with a box cushion on top will double as extra seating when needed.

6. Bella Table from Grandin RoadWhimsical side table to offer relief from the boxy lines.

7. Espana Area Rug from Home Decorators Collection – Love the contrast this orange will provide amongst the blues and greens.

8. Every time I find a plant I like at the garden center, it ends up being some variation of sedum.  So I figure I’ll just plant several varieties in all the planters and hope it does me the favor of spreading and returning every year.

9. Kamea Cube Planters at Garden Fountains – A little pricey, but I really enjoy having this blue in my garden.  I would probably go buy something with the same punchy color at Grumpy’s Garden  down the street.

10. Garden Deva Flower Vase – The star of the show.  Sometime I’ll tell you all about taking a class here. Using a plasma cutter, grinding metal, the works!

11. Turquoise Firepots from Ewins at Amazon – We usually have a fire burning in the ground fire pit, but I enjoy the ease of these and they would help balance out the light when lit.

12. Bird Brain Firepot from Amazon – I figure if I have fire in-ground and sitting on the patio, I should have some for my tabletop as well

13. Perch Orb at Simply Planters – Aside from the Garden Deva sculpture, this is probably my favorite piece.  I would place several in hooks along the fence I think.

Current Attractions – The Sputnik Pendant

When I saw the Nuevo Sergei Pendant on Get the Look in our magazine I knew I finally had to do something with the smaller, similar pendant a very nice friend gifted to us several years ago.  Don’t get me wrong, it had a home in a music venue for a couple of years until we moved the business and at that time, I inherited it.  I promptly brought it home, cleaned it and every single bulb and then removed the pendant above our dining room table to find that I needed several parts to complete the project.  There it has sat for months.  I thought I would use my renewed inspiration from our work with the Hoods to create a mood board for my dining table featuring my “new” fixture.

Nigella Imperial Fans Fabric in Forest by Amy Butler 6. Carlisle Round Chrome Charger at The Webstaurant Store 7. Case Study Planter at Modernica 8. Botanical Green Leaves Table Runner at Kainkain on Etsy

I tried to work with several things I already own. I have the Amy Butler Nigella fabric to recover my seat cushions and am happy to find that my Samoa Dinnerware (purchased in 2002) is still available at Crate and Barrel.  I would place 5-7 of the David Stark soup cans down the middle of my table runner to hold cuttings of rosemary or lavender from the garden.

I’ve had my eye on the creations of Clamlab for quite awhile awhile and love the organic shape and mottled colors of this teapot.  I think it contrasts nicely with the chrome finish of the pendant and chargers.  With a few white pieces thrown in, the earthy, organic colors and textures harmonize with the crisp modern lines of the pendant, table and chairs.

Just for reference, my table is very similar to this mid-century Broyhill.  Look for a future post on my finished version of this inspiration board.

Current Attractions – Brass and Teal Edition

I’ve been reading about the resurgence of the popularity of brass these days and find I feel the same as I always have.  Polished brass has never been a personal favorite, but I have a firm belief that all finishes have a proper place in the design world.  I love that there are so many choices, styles, and finishes in the world that we personally only have to love some of them.  This all started here:

I thought it was just the bright spot I needed when I come home every day.   Although this says it is an antique silver leaf finish, these pictures sure look brass to me, so that’s what we’ll use as inspiration.

We’ve started using the back entrance to the house more often and it is a (very unfinished) Mud Room.  When finished, this room will serve as a launch area for comings and goings, an office, storage, a coat closet and the dogs space.  It is 8′-4″ X 9′-9″ and I’ve worked out how all these functions will fit so now I just need some pretty!  Based on the Tartufo Chandlier above, I created this dream mood board.  I will probably add a rug and some window coverings, but this is a start to capture how I want it to feel.

The first thing you would see when you walk in the door is that stunning Instanbul Wallpaper by Cole and Sons and the vintage white mirror leaning on the wall.  Perfect for last minute checks before you leave the house and for bouncing around the light.  We hope to house some of our favorite plants in this room over the winter, such as our dwarf lemon tree so the more light the better.

I can tell you this is only the start, my mind is overflowing with the possibilities.  Expect to see a few follow-ups on what I might do to achieve the feel I have captured in the mood board.
