Super Bowl Survival Guide

Time to get ready!  Kick-off is right around the corner!  This Sunday, February 3rd marks Super Bowl XLVII when the Baltimore Ravens will take on the San Francisco 49ers in New Orleans.  I love the Super Bowl.  While I can definitely cheer on a good football game, my entertainment mostly centers around the gathering of friends and the stuffing of face… but I enjoy it nonetheless!

If you aren’t a football fan and will be dragged to a watch party this weekend, let me try to help by giving you a few reasons you should get in the spirit.  First of all, it means the end of football season with no games again until late summer.  You can celebrate that, right?

But more interestingly, the head coaches of these two teams are brothers – Jim and John Harbaugh!  (I believe the sports world has christened this game the HarBowl).  How cool is that?!  I bet their parents are as proud as can be.  And what a nifty rivalry there will be on the field this year.

Of course the entertainment features are always the highlights.  This year Alicia Keys will be singing the National Anthem, while Beyonce will be performing the Half-Time Show.

Food is always a big draw at any party, especially a Super Bowl party!  Bite size foods are big hits for sports crowds.  You don’t have to sit at a table to eat, and you can mingle while munching.  Here are a few great ideas for some yummy finger foods:

Mini corn dogs – one of my favorites.  These are already on my list to bring to the shindig I’ll be attending.

Holy cow do these Jalapeno Cornbread Poppers look fabulous!  I think I have a thing for cornbread lately.

Commercials are probably the #1 reason the big game has so many viewers.  After you find off a food coma, check out some fun Super Bowl commercial games.  They definitely help you stay engaged with the group and interested in the game, even if you don’t know the rules of football.

Here is a cool commercials Bingo game.  Style Me Pretty offers a free printable template!

Work-out Motivation: Keep that Resolution!

We are two weeks into 2013 already.  How are those resolutions holding up?  Did you make a resolution related to eating healthier or working out more?  You are not alone!  If you are like me, it’s hit and miss so far… but a good start.  But I am determined to not let a small lapse or a missed day at the gym make me give up on establishing a better routine.  Soon will be the time of year when most people completely drop their resolutions in these areas.  To keep your motivation going strong, how about try some of these tips.  They appeal to me, at least!

DET Resolution01 Work out Motivation: Keep that Resolution!image via Nike

1.  Gadgets are fun, but even better is seeing the results of your physical fitness efforts!  Try a pedometer or fancy accelerometer like Nike’s FuelBand to track your daily movement and send results right to your smart phone!  Having a count of how many calories you are burning throughout the day has a definitely effect on your momentum and more aware of not only how much you move during the day, but also the kind of foods you consume.  It would be so satisfying to have the number validation literally at your fingertips (or wrist, anyway).

DET Resolution02 Work out Motivation: Keep that Resolution!

image via New Balance

2.  New shoes, especially pretty ones like ones offered by New Balance, that are a good fit for your foot type makes running a whole lot more enjoyable.  In Tulsa, you can go to Fleet Feet where they will help you find the best shoe for your body and type of training.  Runners World has great running gear as well.  Both stores have local race schedules and training programs, so you can run in a group of people on your running level (running with others is great motivation to keep going!).

DET Resolution03 Work out Motivation: Keep that Resolution!

3.  Try some fun classes.  If you recently joined a gym, check out the types of classes it offers and what the schedule is for each class that interests you.  My personal favorites at my gym are lunch time yoga class and evening Zumba class.  Zumba is a blast because it gets your heart-rate going AND teaches you some dance moves (and I need all the help I can get in THAT department!).  If you don’t belong to a gym, many locations offer individual classes you can pay as you go. Check your local locations to see if this is an option.  In Tulsa, The Yoga Room offers “drop-in” prices or  smaller packages if you are not ready to drop the money for a full membership.  And Vixen Studio offers fun classes such as Zumba, pole dancing and hip hop dance!

4.  Adorable accessories help make going to the gym a bit more exciting, as well.  Drinking lots of water to stay hydrated is a must.  Who says it can’t be in a super-cute water bottle like this one from Lululemon?

What other things motivate you to keep going when the chilly weather and dark afternoons of winter try to bring you down?

Snowflake Scenery

Winter is definitely upon us as are the chilling temperatures.  But we here in Tulsa have yet to receive a good snowfall.  It feels like such a tragedy to be shivering, stuck inside under layers of clothes and blankets, and yet have no fluffy flakes to behold.  There is something so romantic about mounds of intricate, unique and sparkly snowflakes.

To help keep the jolly mood of the quiet, calm, un-snowy winter months going, I think I’ll whip up some crafts to surround myself with the lovely scenes of winter.

These wreathes are a great way to welcome people into your cozy home.

Apocalyptic Adventures

DET Mayan01 Apocalyptic Adventures

Well, tomorrow is the big day.  The last day.  The day the world is supposedly coming to an end, according to the Mayan calendar… or so rumors say.  It’s too bad I just wasted my final days fighting the crowds, buying and wrapping all those Christmas presents, all for naught.  But getting out of a few deadlines doesn’t seem too bad.

No time like the present, then, to forgive one another, hug our loved ones tight and do all those things we have always wanted to do but have never gotten around to.  Or at the very least, simply enjoy the remaining hours to the best of your ability.  Better get started – you only have about 24 hours!!!  Carpe Diem!

If you are local to Tulsa, you could always head downtown to El Guapo’s Cantina for their Atacolypse!  (According to their Facebook page it consists of “three inverted flour tortilla shells stuffed with 30 ounces of carnitas, lettuce, cilantro, onions, pico de gallo, queso and spicy taco sauce.”)  Eat it all in one sitting, and you receive a free t-shirt!

For those who enjoy extreme sports, you can live your final day to its fullest while practicing shooting zombies that are sure to arise during the impending zombie invasion by playing some rounds at Viking Airsoft (nerf versions are available for the tiny zombie-killers)!

Don’t forget to do a little end-of-the-world research, while you’re at it!  Shaun of the Dead, Night of the Living Dead and Zombieland should be perfect for tips to beating the living dead.  Speaking of… an AMC’s The Walking Dead marathon might be helpful too.  Just curl up with your significant other and veg out together for one last movie night on the couch.

A comprehensive survival kit is a must.  Good ones, like this one from Menosunocerouno, include bottled water, matches, a knife and chocolate, of course.  And be sure to locate your tent and fill your backpack with a first-aid kit, change of clothes and duct tape prior to the invasion.

That’s a Wrap!

How is your Christmas shopping coming?  I’m excited to be (slightly) ahead of the game with just a couple of items left to hunt down.  Thank goodness one task is almost crossed off the never-ending “To Do” List.  But now that there is a stack of gifts piled on my guest room bed, it’s time for the final step – wrapping!

I really love beautifully wrapped presents sitting under a twinkling Christmas tree.  There is just something about the sight that makes my living room feel so warm and cozy.  Another thing I love is a quick and easy DIY way of wrapping these gifts.  The holiday season never fails to be filled with parties, gatherings, bakings and buyings on top of the daily duties.  Though I desire the gifts I give to have a personalized and pretty, I simply do not have the time to devote to intricate details.  So I’m drawn to the simple elegance of gift-wrapping these days.  For me, it is the perfect way to ‘wrap’ up my Christmas tasks!

Below are a few lovely ideas of how to dress up your packages without a lot of supplies and/or you can do on a limited time frame.

And to keep you entertained while swimming in paper, tape and tags, take a listen to this adorable song about the frustrating plastic packaging of toys these days by Sara Groves: “Toy Packaging

Leaves of Fall

The Fall leaves have changed color and many of them have drifted off their tree branches onto the ground.  Soon all the trees will be bare and the pretty colors will cover our yards.  But we don’t have to stop enjoying their beauty.  There are many ways you can use the foliage in decor for your home.  During your Thanksgiving weekend, why not send the kids out for a hunt for the prettiest leaves.  It will keep them occupied while you cook and will give you plenty of options to choose for a little DIY project.  Here are some pretty great ways to continue to enjoy the lovely colors of fall:

Next week, will you have the kids home from school for a few hectic days of cooking in a full house of in-laws?  Need to keep them busy?  Well now is the time to gather materials for some Thanksgiving crafts to keep the little pilgrims busy.  Here are a few Thanksgiving crafts for kids to inspire your own.

I love the idea of a Thankful Tree as shown above.  It’s a great reminder of all the good things in our life in the midst of the bustling season.

These pilgrims made of little clay pots, wooden balls and felt are adorable and would keep young ones busy for a while!

Over that past couple of years, so many of my friends have added bundles of joy to their beautiful families- Sarah’s adorable baby boy made his arrival this past January, my good friend Briana, over at Bifftastica, just welcomed their perfect baby girl at the beginning of the month, and Alayna is due with her bouncing boy any day now!…. to name just a few.

I love all the new little ones I get to snuggle, but with Christmas just two months away, it had me wondering what I was going to do about gifts for all these kiddos I adore!  Also on my mind lately has been my desire to learn to sew and how I never seem to have time to even learn how to do it.  Because there WILL be a learning curve.  I am a beginner.  I mean, a BE-GIN-NER.  The sewing machine that I received for Christmas a couple of years ago has sat almost untouched save for the most basic projects I crafted for another friend’s baby shower.  (And THAT baby-turned-little lady will turn 2 before I know it! So you see how time escapes me.)

Then an idea hit me!  Why not sew gifts for the baby-friends in my life?!  Not only will it give me a great reason to practice my (non-existent as of yet) sewing skills AND give me a deadline so as not to procrastinate my learning, but it will be easy on the ‘ol pocketbook.  And to ease my stress to strive for perfection – babies don’t care if you sew all wonky!

To get started, I headed to the Tulsa City-County Library to find a few books to get inspired.  I left with these two books-  One-Yard Wonders and Weekend Sewing.  I found a majority of my projects in the One-Yard Wonders.  I figured one yard projects could not be that overwhelming.

DET Sew02 Get Crafty! {DIY Adventures in Sewing}

After studying each idea and difficulty level, I found a plethora of projects I wanted to try my hand at.  But alas, I narrowed it down to a few that I thought I could tackle in time for the holidays.

My living room has looked a lot like this over the past week:

DET Sew05 Get Crafty! {DIY Adventures in Sewing}

And with my first steps into the adventure of sewing, I encountered my first few problems.   The borrowing of sewing library books, while economical and helpful, I quickly learned might be difficult when they include patterns… because I can’t cut them!  Well, I could, but I doubt the library or the next borrower would appreciate that very much.  So I’m improvising by overlaying the fabric on the pattern and basically free-handing the outline onto my fabric with a washable pen.  We will see how that turns out.  My second problem is my resident “helper”.  See Exhibit A:

DET Sew03 Get Crafty! {DIY Adventures in Sewing}

That has been the start of my adventure into the world of sewing.  There is not much to see yet, but I will keep you posted on how the projects progress.   And I thought I’d share with you my first steps as well as many other sources of inspiration I have found, in case you want to get started on gift projects of your own!

This adorable sleeping bag for stuffed animals is high on my list of future gifts.

The Season of the Scarf

October means Fall is in full-swing!  Which also means my scarf collection will make an appearance, as mentioned in the latest Prairie Hive Mag, Issue 7.  I think I may have a hidden problem, and it is hidden in the closet – my coat closet.  And while I have quite a few, I can never stop myself from lusting after ones I see in the stores.  Here are a few that I particularly would love to have:

1. PomPom Scarf, Natural Life

2. Rust Infinity Scarf, Festivity

3. Plaid Pop Scarf, Anthropologie

4. Deena & Ozzy Shredded Square Scarf, Urban Outfitters

In my secret stash within the coat closet, I have a few different types of scarf organizers.  There are some good ones out there, depending on what you are looking for.  Here are a couple that I have used:

Fall has hit the stores in full force.  The local grocery stores around here have pumpkins and mums overflowing their front sidewalks.  And much like Lisa talked about in her post yesterday, I too snagged some autumnal decor.  I’m loving the bright yellow mums I added to the blue pots on the steps to my porch.  No fall porch display is complete without some potted mums to add softness and color!  Just looking at them when I pull into the driveway makes me feel all cozy (even with the still-in-the-nineties temps).

If you look carefully enough you can find mum-inspired designs everywhere!  Here are some great ways to bring the fall feeling inside or to carry it with you throughout the day:
