DIY: Coin Necklace

I returned from my trip to Ireland (you can see about that here and here) with a few Euros unspent.  I know!  How did that happen?!  So far, the pretty foreign currency has been sitting in a bowl on my dining table, patiently awaiting my next trip to Europe.

DET CoinNecklace 3 DIY: Coin Necklace

But they won’t be just hanging around much longer.  Not after I had dinner with my friend Katie this past weekend.  Katie recently jetted off to Norway, England and Paris.  She also returned with some coins – krone, pence and a euro.  Being the clever and stylish cookie that she is, she asked her dad to drill a couple of small holes into a couple of the coins (the krone already had a hole).  Then she slipped a simple chain through the holes to create a necklace full of memories.  I loved the necklace and the idea!

DET CoinNecklace 1 DIY: Coin Necklace

It seems easy enough.  You just need a clamp to hold down the coin, and drill a hole with a hand drill.  I’d recommend protective eyewear as well.  I found this website on how to make a hole in a coin.  You can be as simple as you want or get as fancy as you can.  Here is an etsy store – Finds and Farthings – that sells some cool coin jewelry.  But if you use your own pieces, it will definitely be a good keepsake from your adventure!

So I guess my coins will be hanging around a bit longer, after all.  But now around my neck.

Thunder Up!

Ahhhh, basketball.  My favorite sport!  And there is a rumbling in the air ’round these parts lately.  For those of you who aren’t big sports fans, the NBA playoffs are in full swing, and our very own Oklahoma City Thunder are in the midst of the storm, also known as the Western Conference Finals.  The Thunder leads the series 3-2.  Which means that tonight’s Game 6 (at 8:00pm) is a big one!  If they win tonight, they advance to the NBA Finals.  The excitement level and the “Thunder Up”s are heightened in our state.  You’ll have to understand that the OKC Thunder, previously the Seattle SuperSonics, is Oklahoma’s only professional sports team and we’ve only had them to cheer for since 2008, so things get a little intense when we are winning!

To get in the spirit of things, I’ve rounded up some great Thunder items you can pick up to show your support.

LOVE these thunderbolt necklaces….

THUNDER UP!!!!

Photography Tips from Prairie Hive

In honor of the start of National Photography Month, we wanted to share a few easy photo tips that might help you achieve better results for your own pictures.

PHOTO TIP #1- Rule of Thirds:

The first tip is quite an easy one for a big impact – the rule of thirds.  This guideline is a simple way to add interest to an image.

When taking a photograph of an object or a single subject, instead of centering it in the frame, try offsetting it slightly.  If you will imagine your viewfinder to be divided into thirds with both horizontal and vertical imaginary lines, try to align the subject with one of these lines.

As an example, I have added these “imaginary lines” to these shots of a Cuppies & Joe ”Sass-a-Frass” red velvet cupcake I took for Prairie Hive Magazine Issue 5:

By the simply offsetting the subject, your final result has a much more interesting composition:

Here’s another example of using the Rule of Thirds I took for the Robot Party from Issue 5:

PHOTO TIP #2- Best Time of Day for Photos:

When planning a photo session, I’m always asked by clients what time would be best to take family portraits.  Ideally, the best times of day to take pictures with great lighting is an hour after sunrise or an hour before sunset.  The natural sunlight is typically softer with a warmer tone during these times of day.  Mid-day, when the sun is directly overhead, can give off strong, harsh glares and difficult shadow lines (especially in the eye area).

However, these specific “Golden Hours” are not always feasible for a family’s (or a photographer’s) schedule, so finding a shady location is the next best thing.  If it is sunny out, you will still have the brightness required, yet avoid the glare.  Be careful though, shade sometimes gives off a blue tint.  (You can minimize this coloration with changing the White Balance settings on your camera, though).  Similarly, a slightly overcast yet bright, day is a happy day for a photographer.  Same concept as the shade, but you are not limited to staying in a shady location- anywhere will do!

Side Note: For those with kiddos, I often answer that the best time for photos is the time of day when your little ones are the happiest (usually after a good sleep and a feeding!).  Sometimes that timeline trumps time of day!

PHOTO TIP #3- Orientation:

For some reason this one is easy to forget for me!  Be sure that your subjects are facing your light source.  With outdoor portraits, have them facing the direction of the sun to get the best detail and most even lighting.  If the sun is behind your subject, your camera will focus on the brightness behind them, leaving your subject in the dark.

Now that you are equipped with a few (hopefully new to you) techniques, get out there and practice!  For this National Photography Month, we challenge you to take at least one picture a day that you think is a quality shot.  Happy snapping!

Brunch at The Pink House

A couple of weekends ago, I celebrated a friend’s birthday with her. She had been wanting to brunch at The Pink House for some time.  So, on a rainy Saturday, we made the short, half-hour trek from Tulsa to the teahouse in Claremore, OK (just northeast of Tulsa).   On the way, we passed through Main Street Claremore, which sits along Historic Route 66, and spotted a few great galleries, shops and antique stores that I’m dying to go back and visit.  One antique store in particular looked right up my alley!

Before we knew it, we arrived at the indeed-pink house.  We gabbed it up while enjoying yummy comfort food and sipping delightful hot tea.  They serve quiches and wraps, casseroles and baked potatoes.  And be sure to check out the Baked Fudge for dessert!!! Yum.

The old two-story house was so quaint.  Husbands and wives were spending a cozy lunch together.  Grandmothers were dining with their granddaughters, decked out in their best dresses, floppy hats and long gloves.  And friends caught up over a birthday adventure.  It was a delightful afternoon!

If you live in the Tulsa area and want a little get-away, I would recommend making the quick drive out to Claremore for brunch!  They even offer High Tea for private parties.  Check it out!

Fields of Inspiration

DET Bluebonnets01a Fields of Inspiration

Recently I took a little road trip through Texas.  Luckily enough for me, the infamous bluebonnets were in full bloom!  I have never seen firsthand this lovely display of nature, but have glimpsed many friends’ kids posed in them in spring pictures.  And they didn’t disappoint.  They were quite breathtaking at times when they spread over fields as far as the eye can see.

Apparently, I drove straight through the heart of bluebonnet country-  Ennis, Texas has their annual Bluebonnet Trails Festival which is coming up April 21-22nd this year.  If you have the opportunity for a weekend trip, I would recommend a getaway.

Here are a few shots of the bluebonnets and wild flowers snapped on my trip.

Dawn’s Deals: Headboard

It seems like quite a while since I’ve posted any home improvements lately, but that doesn’t mean this house isn’t still (and always) a work in progress!  I’ve been on the lookout for a headboard for my bed since I moved in almost a year ago.  I wanted something other than a standard headboard, and I needed it to be tall because my bed sits high off the floor.

Then, a couple of weeks ago, a friend posted on Facebook that her restaurant supply company had recently bought all the equipment and decor from an establishment that had gone under.  They wanted to sell some of the stuff they had acquired, so she posted a flyer with a few items that needed to go.  I just glanced at the pieces up for grabs, and – lo and behold – found my new headboard!

I claimed it quickly and picked it up the following week.  I just placed it in its new home, and thought I’d share it with you and get your opinion!

What do you think?  Like it?  Should I paint it?  Find something completely different?  I’m interested to know your thoughts!

Why I Love Working Downtown

DET Downtown07 Why I Love Working Downtown

I definitely consider myself lucky to get to work in Downtown Tulsa.  It’s one of my favorite areas in our city and there is so much to do.  Inspired by Mary Beth’s downtown loft featured in our recent Spring Issue, I thought I would share the (many) reasons I love working in our downtown area.

Downtown Tulsa is mostly known for it’s nightlife.  Between retro bowling at the Dust Bowl Lanes & Lounge and Luchador Wrestling at Elote (don’t miss the next round of fights this Friday, March 16th!) and the many concerts at the BOK Center, Cain’s Ballroom and the Brady Theater, you never lack something to entertain you in the evenings.  But what about during the day?

Well, Tulsa is definitely known for its Art Deco Architecture.  I love driving in and then strolling the 2 blocks from my car to the office and taking in all the different buildings.

There is a Farmers Market on Tuesdays at the lawn area in front of the tallest building downtown- the BOK Tower.  (Did you know that the BOK Tower, situated at the end of Boston Ave. at 3rd Street, was designed by the same architect as the World Trade Center?  It’s basically a replica of those iconic buildings, but about half the height and an eighth of the footprint.)  The Farmer’s Market sign says it is open from May to October, but quite a few vendors have been troopers and have shown up all through the (pretty mild) winter.

One of my most favorite things about working downtown in the Spring and Fall is the Brown Bag It  series at the Tulsa Performing Arts.  This is a (FREE!) lunchtime musical performance in the Westby Pavillion at the PAC, where different musicians are featured every Wednesday during the 6-week series.  You are welcome to bring a lunch, brown bag or otherwise, to munch while enjoying the lovely sounds of everything from a jazz piano to harp duos to acoustic guitars.  The fun music is a perfect mid-week, mid-work-day break to take a breath and recharge!  I love it!

As for some shopping, I adore the unique boutiques available to the downtown worker.  Of course, the funky gift shop Dwelling Spaces, also mentioned in Issue 5, is a favorite.  And another exciting addition are the new Pop-up Shops in the Deco District!  Made: The Indie Emporium Shop is a perfect place to score great handmade goodies.

Another great pop-up is Bison & Bear.  It features top quality products for men, and has been featured here on our blog.  And right next door is Hood, owned by our very own MANDAY contributor Shane Hood.  It’s a fantastic place to pick up some stylish, vintage home accessories!

Do you work in Downtown Tulsa?  What are your favorite work week spots?  Or if not in Tulsa, what do you love about the location you work?
