Family Tree Wall Art

Has anyone else traveled that path down memory lane, filling in gaps in the family history and learning things about your ancestors that you are proud of and never would have expected? About ten years ago my sisters and I started and still find it fun and fascinating to discover new things about so many different branches of our families. With the new online databases for people’s history, census information, birth and death records, etc, it has gotten much easier to sleuth out missing family members (Plus we have an Aunt that is talented at searching through the vast amounts of info and finding the details). However, cemetery visits should never be ruled out, those adventures provide great entertainment and memories because as Forrest Gump says, “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get.”

I’ve been thinking about family tree wall art since the beginning of that journey and here’s a round up of some simple and beautiful pieces as well as the informational and graphic. I’ll start with my favorite (middle image) since I’ve been thinking about it for years and just can’t get it out of my mind. From a Martha Stewart magazine years ago, you can now find the template and instructions on her website. The graphic fan appeals to my love of geometry (visuals, not the actual practice) and I think you could hang it unfinished and add information over the years.

 RD052512Personal Family Tree Wall Art

The left piece is also a Martha Stewart family tree. The shape is made of family members names. This will probably be the one that wins out in my home. I think you could add branches however you see fit. Think about how fun it would be to create a forest of these directly on the wall (or as custom wallpaper)! Each tree could be a different branch of the family. Yes, I used that cheesy pun.

The right work is a custom order piece from Luvin Every Minute on Etsy. Fun mod artwork, you hardly realize it is a family tree. I think this would make a welcome and thoughtful anniversary gift.

These next pieces are a little whimsical and might not be as flexible for different spaces but I can think of individuals in my life that each of these pieces fit their personalities.

RD052512Whimsical Family Tree Wall Art

On the left is a hand drawn tree in pencil from Story Tree on Etsy. The touch of cut initials in the tree trunk is sweet and you can almost imagine this being drawn by a loving relative.

In the middle is a fun tree from Uncommon Goods. I have some nieces and nephews that might enjoy this creative project. They could capture images of family members at the next function and have a craft time cutting out faces from the printed photos. It would be a completely customized tree just for them.

On the right is a simple representative tree from Red Envelope. Anyone surprised they don’t have an owl version? This would make a satisfying choice for a DIY gift version. You could change up the colors, leaf shapes and even the bird type (species?).

Have any of you made your own family tree wall art? I think the closest we’ve gotten in our brood is the door jamb full of penciled in heights and ages of the grandkids. But since that only depicts one generation, I suppose it hardly counts for a family tree.

Flat Screen Television Decorating Dilemma for Ask Us April!

“Dear Prairie Hive,

Help! This corner is the best spot in our living room for the television but the tall ceilings and low TV stand make the corner seem bare. Any tips to design around this awkward corner space (shelves? Wall décor?). We’d like to keep the entertainment unit sleek and avoid a bulky TV cabinet.

Leah H.”

RD050112 Flat Screen Television Decorating Dilemma for Ask Us April!

First of all let me say that I love your wood floors and brick fireplace with the curved hearth! If you plan on keeping the current unit, I would go ahead and push the left side back so that it is square with both walls. Often, furniture placement feels unintentional when the angle is shallow. If the television needs to be angled for viewing, use a swivel mount to enable moving it while watching.

Since this is such a tight corner and the fireplace and mantle are a more natural focal point, I would plan on coordinating with the mantle decor rather than fighting it by creating a cohesive look for both areas. The other alternative would be to install a large piece of art just under the paint color change, but I would only recommend that if you can create a similar vignette on the right side of the fireplace for symmetry. Try something like a basket collection over the fireplace and leading over to the wall above the television.

Flat Screen Television Decorating Dilemma for Ask Us April!

Optimally the television would be lowered about 6″  so the horizontal lines will not line up with the lines of the mantle and hang it with a swivel wall-mount unit. This would allow freedom in choosing a base cabinet to house the electronics. A mid-century  or clean lined cabinet on tall legs gives the sense of space with less bulk. Consider going with a lighter finish to coordinate a bit more with the mantle or a medium toned wood finish, a little darker than the floor but with no red in it.

If the goal is to visually separate the media unit from the fireplace area, choose a true corner unit in a painted white finish. Stay with somewhat traditional or transitional lines to complement the style of trim and mantle woodwork. Then an opportunity arises to place a large round basket to corral toys or a stack of colorful floor pillows between the television unit and the brick hearth. This allows separate treatment for each space. Install a large statement piece above the mantle and flank it with tall floral arrangements, thin lamps or elaborate candlesticks. Really emphasize those choices so the fireplace area becomes the immediate focus.

When using an open unit, try to incorporate a few different textures. Perhaps stacking the media units would allow room for some folded blankets or a basket to corral remotes when not in use.

Once you’ve decided on exactly how you want to tackle this area, focus on the feel or design aesthetic you desire. Casual and natural, transitional, modern or eclectic. If another home resident (smile) wishes that the components work without opening doors, try frosted glass. My remotes have always functioned through the glass and then you have the best of both worlds. Plus an additional texture has been introduced without having to bring in other items.

I would also be sure to include many textures. I try to bring in something natural like woven baskets, glass, metal, and wood. Think decorative boxes, pillows, blankets, books, and vases or figurines. The Jonathan Adler animals are great for this and things like this are more readily available now or create your own version. Target is a great resource if you prefer not to scour around vintage shops and garage sales.

Let me know what you think! I hope I’ve not inundated you with too many choices, but depending on the other ares of the room, I would tackle this a few different ways. I hope you at least know where you’d like to start. Thanks for asking, this was a pertinent question for many.

Thanks to everyone that sent in questions last month! If you haven’t already, we would love to hear from you about what we can do to improve Prairie Hive Blog and Magazine!  Here are our quick reader surveys:

DIY Artwork Inspiration at Cuppies and Joe

I know we were just here yesterday but I was so taken with the unique presentation of artwork and photography at Cuppies & Joe that I just had to follow up! Update: You can buy your very own pieces from the artist who made these (frames and all)! Go check out Samantha Lamb Photography!

RD041312C&Jbookpagematte DIY Artwork Inspiration at Cuppies and Joe

First up is the book page matte. We know the photography makes this piece but I am drawn to the antiqued book page matte and the simple stock wood frame. Even when we have a beautiful, meaningful photo ready to go, the framing step often slows the finishing process down. This is a great looking cost effective solution. If you don’t have matte board, covering cardstock or poster board with pages and then antiquing to give the same affect is a good option. The frame looks like it might be simple, unfinished 1×3 material, easily found at your local hardware store or lumber yard. These pieces are so small that if you’re lucky and resourceful, you might be able to save from offcuts at a building site.

RD041312C&Jplywoodframe DIY Artwork Inspiration at Cuppies and Joe

Second, we have a plywood board with the frame on top. This is a clever way to fill up space on the wall, give presence to the piece and draw the eye for more focus on the photo. If I were to attempt this, I would use some stock trim and create a frame by mounting it on the plywood. This would also be very easy if you just took the back off an old frame and mounted it onto a scrap board. If you do that, make sure the board and frame are in the same color family. I think the impact of these simple pieces is that the color is introduced in the artwork/photography.

RD041312C&Jmagnifyingglass DIY Artwork Inspiration at Cuppies and Joe

This is my favorite I think! A collage of words and paint splashes fills in the edges of this piece and you are provided with a magnifying glass to more easily enjoy all the little bits. Genius! Think about all the fun versions of this, a child’s version, a conversation starter, a hallway alcove where there’s little room for anything else or maybe a thoughtful gift to your significant other filled with sentimental thoughts and momentos, I think I could go on and on.

Now if only I could find some slivers of tree like theirs…

Here’s a close-up, who doesn’t love all those little hearts? Pardon the graininess, I think I fixed that (previously unknown to me) camera setting a little later in the day.

RD041312C&Jwindowframe DIY Artwork Inspiration at Cuppies and Joe

Last but not least is this new take on a window frame. Just as windows frame our views of the outside world, this one frames the focus of the art piece. The combination of word collage following the wood grain and simple rope trim around the photos is interesting in itself. I feel like you get multiple art pieces in one with this treatment and it makes me feel loads better about all of the little wood trim bits and pieces I’ve saved over the years.

And here’s my obligatory shot of the spiced chai latte I enjoyed that day. The weather wasn’t unlike today’s, perhaps a little chillier, but I think I might go enjoy another this afternoon while I dream about all the new projects I now envision.

To be completely honest, I was planning on showing you my own finished version of artwork inspired by these, but all my scrap wood was affected by the latest basement flood and requires a bit of tender loving care before it can be ready. (But now I won’t have to, because I can just buy one of Samantha’s, really love “Hanging to Dry” and “Honey and Maple Syrup“) Gosh, I just love to make promises about projects to you guys, don’t I! Oh, and while I’m seeing the grain in that photo, I must tell you how fun it is to hang out with photographers and ask questions about ISO and white balancing like I might know what I’m talking about : )

Paint samples are great to use as a craft material.  They’re colorful (obviously), which is right up my alley.  And they’re free!  Also, right up my alley.  Grab a few next time you’re at your local home improvement store and see what you can come up with.  (If you plan on tackling a big project, I’d recommend asking the store before helping yourself icon wink Peppy Paint Chip Projects  Here are a few great ideas for inspiration!

Dawn’s Deals: Lamp Lover

DET Lamp05a Dawns Deals: Lamp Lover

It was recently pointed out to me that I have quite an eclectic collection of lamps.  I’m a big fan of the usage of lamps.  Overhead lights that come with the standard ceiling fan or in a new, ‘blank slate’ home tends to give off a harsh light and can cast some unappealing shadows, in my opinion.  Incandescent light complements skin tones (i.e.: making people look more attractive) so much better than halogen or fluorescent.  (Of course, you can choose a compact fluorescent bulb with a warm color temperature to mimic incandescent, too.) I much prefer the cozy, home-y feel that the glow of a lamp creates.  Recessed canned light, can be lovely, too.  But until I can get around to having them installed in my living room, I will enjoy the soft lamp light.

Here are the funky, colorful (and thrifty!) lamps currently residing in my living room:

Remember the Tulsa Designer Showcase I mentioned here back in May?  Well, I got this one at the Showcase’s boutique for $9.00!  The shade is from Target.

DET Lamp01a Dawns Deals: Lamp Lover

This one was picked up for $3.00 (base and shade, but I’d like to replace the shade) at a garage sale benefitting Triumphant Ministries.

DET Lamp02a Dawns Deals: Lamp Lover

About a year and a half ago, I fell in love with the unique and quirky character of this lamp, whose shade appears to be upside-down (but isn’t), that I found at the Moberly Antique Mall.  I believe it was about $20.00.  This past Fall, I also picked up some other lovelies, that I shared here, on this quaint Main Street .

And finally, I snagged this interesting lamp at a local thrift store – Quality Thrift Store – for $14.00.  I still haven’t decided if I love it because it’s so ugly or can’t stand it because it’s so ugly.  It currently sits in my craft room/office without a shade.  It’s my work in progress.

Playroom Project

I just decided to move one little piece of furniture this morning, and the next thing I knew, the whole playroom was torn to pieces.  It has been on my list – organizing and rearranging the playroom so that the kids can actually find their toys and then maybe even put them away again.  I have big plans of everything having its own place, the furniture arranged in a useful, but also somewhat attractive way and MAYBE even a chalkboard wall.  My dream playroom (never mind that it’s actually for my children) has artfully arranged toys, creatively displayed artwork and an insane chalk mural that created no dust at all.  I am going to be realistic, but I am using some of these great rooms as inspiration to get me started- and if I’m lucky- finished, too!

LWplayroomchalkwall Playroom Project

The chalkboard wall is what initially drew me to this room, but I also love the colors, the rug, the pillow, the shade, etc.  I also have a table like this one in our room, and I’m hoping to use black to help tie everything together.  I want to display art and make games and toys accessible, but when everything is visible it can get a little messy.

LWplayroomart Playroom Project

Image from Better Homes and Gardens

This display is so great for the kids’ artwork.  I like the idea of framing the pieces that I want to keep permanently and then tacking up others and changing them out as new pieces are created.  I’m also a big fan of using a big art clip to hang the kids’ work.  They’re cute, easy and about $2 at the craft store.

LWplayroomcloset Playroom Project

Image from Better Homes and Gardens

So by moving that one piece of furniture this morning, I managed to get most of the playroom closet cleaned out.  I’m not really sure why that’s how it went, but at least something good came of it.  I love the organization in this closet, and now that I have gone through every last paintbrush and half-used book of stickers, I’m ready to put everything in  the appropriate containers.  I love these because you can see what’s in them, they have handles and they’re not too big - much easier for little hands to get off the shelf and carry.

Before I started tearing things apart today, I had begun a little bit of playroom organization.  With two little boys, we have lots of toys like nerf guns, swords, guitars, bats (promise our house isn’t as dangerous as it sounds)- and in the past I’ve found these things a little bit hard to organize.  They need to be in a container that’s tall (so it won’t tip over) and very sturdy (so it won’t fall apart).

LWplayroombasket Playroom Project

Baskets like these from Pottery Barn are perfect.  They’re big and very sturdy and they’re just as perfect for blocks or blankets as they are for guitars and swords.

LWplayroommetalbasket Playroom Project

These baskets by Aidan Gray available at Layla Grace are also great.  They’re so cute, but they’re also metal so they’re super durable.

So, this has been the focus so far on my playroom makeover.  As I have updates and hopefully pictures worth showing – I will share how it all turned out.  To finish up, I have one more picture of an awesome playroom.  It’s too late for us to try to recreate this- but maybe it’s not for you!

The Stockings Were Hung

Over the Thanksgiving weekend, I began to pull out my Christmas decorations.  While unpacking all my pretty accessories, it occurred to me that I had one little problem.  My new house doesn’t have a fireplace, hence it does not have a mantle.  Where am I going to hang my stockings?  So over the past few days, I’ve been looking for alternative ways to hang my stockings.  I thought I’d share a few of the ideas I found in case any of you are facing the same holiday dilemma!

DIY: Sweater Pillow

The warm clothes are coming out of hiding, blankets are getting dusted off and the firewood is starting to stack up.  The cooler weather has definitely arrived and probably here to stay for a while.  It makes me want to cuddle up on my couch with a steaming cup of tea and my favorite blanket.  But there is something that has been missing.

I’ve been seeing cozy store displays that include the thing that I’m itching to add to my favorite spot – cable-knit pillows.   Like these:

DET DIY SweaterPillow01 DIY: Sweater Pillow

Sweater-Knit Pillow Cover, Pottery Barn

DET DIY SweaterPillow02 DIY: Sweater Pillow

Sculpted Origami Pillow Cover, West Elm

DET DIY SweaterPillow04 DIY: Sweater Pillow

Cashmere Cable Throw Pillow, Ralph Lauren

However, the ones I’ve fallen in love with have been a bit out of the price range I feel comfortable spending on a cushion.  But they’re so cute!! So, I figured I’d try to make some myself!

First, I went to my local Salvation Army Family Store and snagged 2 men’s sweaters in the colors and textures I liked.  Each sweater was $3-$5, and I believe there are certain days of the week when clothes are discounted even more deeply.  (Check with your local Family Store for specials).  Then, I scored a couple of cheap pillows from Bed Bath & Beyond.  One was a travel pillow that was around $3-5 with my 20% coupon.  The other was about the same price- a clearance pillow plus my 20% coupon!  This one was basically a pillow form with a cover.  I simply removed the cover and voila!  And finally, I purchased a couple of packages of buttons from Hobby Lobby.

Then I got to sewing!  Below are the basic steps I used for my pillows.  There is a caveat- I am a new sewer!  And I did not use a pattern of any sort.  I just stumbled my way through this project.  So please be kind and feel free to overlook any imperfections (especially the buttonholes!).  But I must say that, overall, I really like the finished product and they are happily residing beside me while I catch up on my DVR!

 DIY: Sweater Pillow

I placed the pillow within the sweater to get the basic size I needed to cover it and cut the excess sweater off.

DIY: Sweater Pillow Then I cut the excess from the sides, turned the sweater inside-out, and sewed the seams on 3 sides. DIY: Sweater Pillow

I left a longer end open because I wanted a “flap” to button down over the main part of the pillow.  I did sew a hem around the edges of the “flap”.   DIY: Sweater Pillow

Finally, I sewed the button holes, sewed on the buttons and added them to my couch! DIY: Sweater Pillow

So, what do you think?!

Other ways to make it yours:

- Add rosettes as embellishments.

- Use a holiday sweater (maybe one with a reindeer?) and center the image on the pillow

- Leave pockets on sweaters for added interest

I Love Candy: Happy Halloween!

I love Halloween! It’s routinely my favorite holiday, and I love everything associated with a holiday revolving around candy. That said, my favorite visual symbol of Halloween is not a witch’s hat, but candy corn.

I’m not a fan of eating it — except I recently discovered gummy candy corn, and it’s delicious! — but the tri-color candy is a great way to decorate.

Here are some fun ideas I found:
