Anti-Valentines Day Party – It’s Not Me, It’s YOU!

antival Anti Valentines Day Party Its Not Me, Its YOU!

For a chef’s wife, Valentine’s Day, along with New Year’s Eve and assorted other holidays is one of the loneliest out there – they cook a romantic meal for everyone else while you cry into your wine and clear out your DVR (OK, maybe it’s not quite that bad)… Anyone else out there HATE Valentine’s Day?  It’s always seemed so contrived and forced, but even for an old married gal like myself, the prospect of sitting home alone is a little depressing.  What’s a girl to do?  Throw an ANTI Valentine’s Day party!  Celebrate singlehood (or a dateless night) with other like-minded friends and forget about all the sappy romance stuff!

The It’s Not Me, It’s You theme is my personal favorite, but if you want a few other slogan ideas, try:

-Cupid is Stupid

-Love Stinks, Let’s Drink!

-Eat, Drink and Be Single!

These can be used on invitations, banners, or signs throughout the party.

Next, food.  Valentine’s Day is all about the sweets, so check out these adorable “Broken Heart” Cupcakes made by Alter {Egos} Cupcakery here in Tulsa.

For the realllly bitter guests, check out these BitterSweets candies, or make your own cookies with catty slogans directed at your exes… (Note: I’m really sad that the HAD BTR one got smeared…and that they wouldn’t let me take the oh-so-effective FU on television).

Last but not least – entertainment.  Take out your frustrations on cupid by bringing in a heart shaped piñata for guests to beat.  This one was made by Christine from Made: The Indie Emporium Shop, and really – it’s too pretty to break.  Her DIY was so simple but turned out beautifully – just find a heart shaped box (chipboard at Hobby Lobby is ideal for breaking later), cut fringe from colored paper of your choice, and use double stick tape to attach it in rows to the box.  Lovely!

Another idea I loved was making a dartboard for your guests to attach photos of their exes to….check out my celebrity jerk test model and more on my Great Day Green Country segment today!

PH Garland NEW 2 Winter Garland DIY

Image from Prairie Hive Magazine, Winter 2012 Issue

Hopefully by now, you’ve checked out our new issue of Prairie Hive Magazine!  To get in the holiday spirit, we collaborated with the elves over at Gleeful Peacock Mercantile to create some lovely winter garlands (who says they are just for Christmas?).

We asked each of the artists to give us the DIY details:

Painted Pinecone Garland, by Nikki at Gleeful Peacock

Items Needed: Pine Cones, Jute, Spray Paint, Hot Glue

Step 1 – Spray paint pinecones your desired colors.  This will take a few coats and you will want to spray at an angle that gets the paint into the core of the pine code.  Allow a day to dry.

painted pine cones 1024x682 Winter Garland DIY

Step 2 – Cut jute in 2” to 3” lengths. Hot glue the strips in a loop on top of the pinecones.

Step 3 – Wrap jute in a spiral around the loop and down the pinecone. Creating a cap that covers the glue from the loop. Cut the end and glue to secure.

Step 4 – Cute your just the desired length of garland plus a few feet extra. Start on one end, a foot in to allow a end to tie to an mantle or banister.  Tie the just around the loop of the first pinecone. Tie a pinecone every 6 to 8 inches and rotate colors as you please.

“Be Merry” Book Rosette Garland, by Tiffany Foster

Items needed :a book, letter stickers or cricut, hot glue gun, permanent adhesive, bakers twine, Exacto knife, glitter, tacky glue, paint brush, small clothespins

  1. Decide what you want your garland to say.  This will determine how many medallions you will need to make.
  2. Cut a good amount of book pages out close to the spine of the book.  You can use an exacto knife or a single blade of a sharp pair of scissors.

20121124 124958 1024x768 Winter Garland DIY

3. Cut 2 ½ x 8 inch strips (I use a clear ruler and a rotary cutter to make this process go faster).  Make sure to center the print on the strips so they are interesting.

 4. Using permanent adhesive (I used The Craft Collection Permanent Adhesive Tape Runner), join three strips together for each medallion you wish to make, overlapping about ¼ of an inch.

5. Once you have all your strips joined together begin accordion folding them end to end with about ¼ inch folds.

6. When all the strips are folded, join the two ends together with your permanent adhesive, making sure the folds match up.

 7. Place the circle on the table and press to center….now the magic happens. Ta! Da! A medallion!

8. This part is a little tricky.  While holding the the center put a little glob of hot glue in the middle   – don’t worry about what it looks like because we will be covering it with our letters later (I usually spread the glue into the grooves a little as it cools.  If you don’t like to live dangerously you might want to just glue a little circle onto the back or something safer).

9. Repeat those steps until you have all of your medallions folded and ready.

10. Now cut the letters for your garland.  I cut mine on my Circut using the Simply Sweet card size 1 ½” lower case on Red card stock.  You could also use stickers or freehand them onto your circles.

11. Punch or trace enough circles for each medallion.  I punched mine with a 1 & 7/8” circle punch.  You could also just trace something you had around the house that was the right size.

12. Sprinkle some gold glitter onto a paper plate and pour a little glue into a dish. I used Martha Stewart Florentine Gold glitter and Elmer’s Craft Bond Tacky Glue but I added a little water to it because it was very tacky and difficult to spread.

13. Paint the glue onto the edge of the circles and then dip into the glitter.  Repeat with each circle.  Do the same with the medallions.

20121124 165740 1024x768 Winter Garland DIY

20121124 171210 1024x768 Winter Garland DIY 13. Atttach letters to circles.  I used Martha Stewart ballpint-tip glue pen for this job because it is much easier to glue a tiny space with this tool.

14. Next attach your circles with a glue gun.  Use plenty of glue because the circle will help hold your medalion together.  Make sure the circle is in the center of the medallion.

15. Lay out your medallions in the order they will hang to determine how much bakers twine you will need.

16. Hang your twine.

17. Attach medalions to twine with mini- clothespins.

18. Be Merry!

The No Sew JOY Bunting by My Paper Pinwheel

Items Needed: Canvas Fabric, acrylic paint, form paint brush, foam alphabet stamps, natural twine, pom pom ribbon, fabric scraps, hot glue gun

1. Cut out three bunting shapes (I chose to use a pendant shape but you can easily do a traditional triangle shape).

2. Take foam alphabet stamps and acrylic paint and brush the paint just covering the letters.

3. Stamp each pendant with the letters.

4. Measure the twine for where the garland will hang.

5. Fold the top part of the pendants over the twine and hot glue it in place.

6. Take the pom pom ribbon and hot glue it across the word “Joy”.

7. Finished the garland with scrap fabric cut into a long strip and tied on each end.

Fabric Scrap Garland by Tiffany Foster

Items Needed: scraps of fabric, string of lights (50 light string is ideal for a mantle)

1. Cut fabric info 9″x2″ strips.

2. Tie onto the string of lights.

It’s Cinco de Derby – Happy Weekend!

Cinco de Derby?  Derby de Mayo?  Whatever you’re calling it, there are lots of reasons to celebrate this weekend (it’s also a Super Moon Saturday night!).  Here are a few of my favorite ways to combine the festivities:

Pick your poison: Mint Margaritas or Tequila Juleps.  Then tomorrow morning, try one of our Micheladas to cure your hangover.

Having a party?  Combine this DIY Fiesta Garland with a vase of roses.  Or try these Straw Flowers to add some preppy to your fiesta…

To serve: Pinata Cookies (adorable!) or Corona Cupcakes.

And finally, what to wear: The Sombrero Fascinator.  I kind of wish I had one of these just to wear around the house today.

Have a festive day!

Wreath Alternatives for Any Season

I love wreaths but sometimes I just need a break and that’s when I start scouring my house for something a little different. Enjoy an eclectic round-up of alternatives to wreaths for door decor that could be personalized to suit your family and style and varied seasonally for year long choices.

First up, here’s a gathering of wall decor from Pier One that I thought could be repurposed as door decor. From a nod to the seventies with the metal flower flourish to a beautiful glass “gems” sparkler that will have you smiling every time you come home. It reminds me of the colored glass art in the Lupps’ windows from our Issue 3 and could be enjoyed inside and out on a glass door.

Next we have the Tree of Life art and Temple Bells from Viva Terra. I think these would both work well on a solid door and the bells could be used on many door types. Those bells, I think I’ll never take those off my list!

How about a mini banner that carries any sentiment you wish? I like this simple, natural “Welcome” banner from Lazy Caterpillar on Etsy but pick your favorite season for the banner and find a sentiment that echoes it. I also think “Love” and “Peace” would be classic sayings.

RD040612Welcome Wreath Alternatives for Any Season

If your ready to move on from banners/bunting, a good alternative is this huge paper rose from Green Wedding Shoes. I love this, do-it-yourself, many possibilities, and endlessly customizable. Just think how great it will look on your door, or in a large shallow vessel as a table centerpiece. Not to mention what a unique bridal bouquet it is.

And to wrap it all up, you could go a more traditional route and use a family monogram. Or you could create your own crest as a family project! Clockwise, Mosaic Wood and Tile Letter from Nature Inspired Crafts on Etsy, Framed Monogram on Burlap from Love of Family and Home,  Wine Cork Letter found on Ebay and a painted monogram wood plaque from Script N Style. And of course you could always make your own moss covered letter like Dawn’s!

If you just want to be a little cute, check out this bunny. I’ll let you know now that I didn’t find quite what I was looking for on the DIY route so you’ll probably see some creations of my own later this year. Valentine’s Day Decoration Round-Up

While I am not one to celebrate Valentine’s Day in the traditional way with flowers, chocolates and eating dinner out or other date night activities, I do enjoy the free-for-all declaration (decorations) of love in the shape of stylized hearts.  Since I’ve been surrounded by these at work, I thought I would show a quick round up of things I would use to garnish my home.

Hopefully I’ll get around to making some of these and getting them up before the holiday arrives. If so, I’ll be sure to share with you! I do however have a little head start because I made a crochet heart garland a couple of years ago but would like to make the mini to go along with it. This one is similar but I gave it to my mom, mine is the same pink with a bright coral edge. How fitting that my bright coral color is almost the same as Pantone’s new color of the year.  My palette is pink, coral (or tangerine), white and gray.

Sorry, this was the best photo I could find, all of the others were blurry. I’ll try and share more pics soon. I got the pattern for this heart from Bella Dia in 2008, thankfully it’s still there.

Outfit to Room – Happy New Year Edition!

It’s always been my opinion that New Year’s Eve – whether your plans involve game night at home or a big party – is the time to bring out the sequins.  It just doesn’t seem right to countdown at midnight without them.  This mix of warm and cozy paired with sparkle on top of more sparkle somehow takes it down a notch and elevates the look at the same time.  For my New Year’s Outfit to Room Edition I decided to do a little party planning as well, and dreamed up a permanent room with a bit of this look, blinged out for a party.  Enjoy!

Metallic is the new Red & Green

As much as I adore traditional red and green, this year it’s all about metallics.  In addition to the glam factor, I love it because it’s a great way to add holiday sparkle and spirit to your home  - without needing to rework your entire living room around reds, greens and santas.  Metallics can look modern or traditional (or a bit of both), and can be just as dramatic as holiday brights.  I’ve rounded up a few great examples of metallic vignettes, as well as some of my favorite products within the trend!

Merry Kitschmas

You think you’ve got Christmas décor figured out. You’ve been reading Prairie Hive every day, letting the lovely ladies guide you through the yuletide transformation of your home. You’ve tablescaped. You’ve carefully crafted your wreath silhouette from hand-selected ornaments. You’ve kept everything in check, creating a refined, well thought out aesthetic worthy of a Martha Stewart photo shoot. But then something happens…you stumble upon Tulsa’s best Christmas décor and realize that self restraint was all for naught.

Those best decorations can be found in the warm, windowless depths of the Celebrity Restaurant (also home to Tulsa’s best Caesar salad, but that’s another entry) – where overdone and cheesy turns into a spectacular display of holiday exuberance. Which begs the question, who are we trying to impress? Holiday décor should be about making a space we enjoy, that adds to our celebratory mood. Sometimes this can be accomplished through restraint and making something photo ready, but I for one think we should all take some cues from the Celebrity, and add some well placed kitsch to that Sterile Claus aesthetic.

Let’s talk lights first. Why is everyone so into these LED lights? Sure, they last longer and they’re more energy efficient, but they give off an nauseating hue of light. They make your house look like a Lite-Brite. To combat this trend, you need incandescent lights, preferably multi-colored ones, the bigger the better. Now, more than ever, the Charlie Brown aesthetic says that you know how to party – that you know Christmas is about bright and cheery, not cold and icy. (Or maybe they say you own AEP stock)

One of the best things about the Celebrity is the multi-colored, fiber optic Christmas tree. Why don’t more people have these? Does anything make you happier than sipping a hot toddy or some eggnog while the rainbow of colors transmits you through the 12 days of Christmas? Or maybe you’re not into the multi-colored look and would just prefer a bright pink version – glowing in the corner, a constant reminder that taking the holidays too serious, like your Douglas Fir in the other room, is what makes the Holidays so depressing. So your cheer yourself up, and put one of these in the corner:

 Merry KitschmasImage via AliBaba.com

One of our favorite (and cheesiest) Christmas decorations is this guy:

ELXmas5 Merry Kitschmas

Via WalMart.com

A small TV shaped music box, that sees Hermey the elf and Rudolph dancing in a circle while the Abominable Snowman lurks by the tree. We like it because it reminds us of our youth – the innocence of Christmas past and the unbridled hope that came with them….that’s not true, it’s just a really good decoration, but it is nice to be reminded of your childhood and all the memories that come along with it. Maybe it’s time to put the snowman in our yard:

 Merry Kitschmas

Via Sears.com

But I digress, let’s talk about what the Celebrity Restaurant does better than anyone: tinsel. We spent an inordinate amount of time at our house looking for the perfect garland this year. It had to have just the right pine-like texture and the perfect imbedded lighting (i.e. no LED). What we should have done? Buy some silver, red, and green metallic tinsel and attach it to every protruding surface we could find. Sure, it has a texture more like one of those fake leis, but it really ties the room together. In fact, I’m going to go get some now – we have a lot of picture frames that look lonely – thanks Celebrity!

And finally, all of this decorating is going to make you thirsty. Try moving past the eggnog and hot toddies (although I realize that’s hard to do), and make yourself a Maple Leaf cocktail – 2 oz canadian whiskey, 1/2 oz Grade A maple syrup, and 1/2 oz lemon juice. It’s a great drink for a cold winter’s day, and obviously, it goes great with pancakes – so it’s great for Christmas morning. And nothing says Holidays, or kitsch, like drinking this, or any drink, out of a Griswold moose mug:

Take it by the horns and enjoy your fiber optic tree! (Some music to drink by)

Elephants are the new Birds

SVElepAll Elephants are the new Birds

Maybe it’s one too many Portlandia references, but I am so over the “put a bird on it” trend.  It was fun while it lasted, but it’s time to move on.  Have you noticed all the elephants starting to march into interiors, fashion, products, and more?

Elephants are definitely popular on the nursery scene (I’ve spent a fair amount of time browsing this new room category lately) – here’s one of my favorite examples of mixing patterns, colors and types to keep a theme present without getting too matchy (the number one sin in nurseries, in my opinion).

Since elephants are a symbol of wisdom and luck, I love them as a design element.  Plus, how cute are their babies (watch this)?  As a tribute, I rounded up some of my favorite olifant items:

Have you carved those pumpkins yet?  When our children marched out of their rooms today dressed like surgeons, announcing they were ready to “operate” on the pumpkins, we decided it was time to go for it!

They already had a plan for each of their pumpkins, but had they needed inspiration I would have loved to show them some of these.  So many cute ideas – some great for the kids – and some great if there’s not one kid in the house!  Happy carving!

I love these pumpkins – they’re carved with a drill!  There’s a great tutorial on the website.

And ta da…

 Crafty Carvings!

Here are our pumpkins.  If the center pumpkin design looks familiar, you may have a 10 year old with the Encyclopedia of Immaturity.  The insides of the pumpkin are currently in the fridge- they will be the pumpkin’s vomit on Halloween.  Lovely.

One more thing.  Since our daughter has been BEGGING to roast pumpkin seeds, I thought I would include a recipe.  Yummy!

Spiced Pumpkin Seeds from allrecipes.com

1 1/2 tablespoons margarine, melted; 1/2 teaspoon salt; 1/8 teaspoon garlic salt; 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce; 2 cups raw whole pumpkin seeds

1.  Preheat oven to 275 degrees F  2.  Combine the margarine, salt, garlic salt, Worcestershire sauce and pumpkin seeds.  Mix thoroughly and place in shallow baking dish.  3.  Bake for 1 hour, stirring occasionally.

Enjoy!

Happy Halloween!
