Craft Party Friday Fun

RD082412EtsyCraftparty Craft Party Friday Fun

I think joining a craft party is a great way to unwind on Friday after a work week, how about you? It’s so easy to get lost in cutting, gluing, painting, wrapping, stitching and more and before you know it, any stress has just melted away.

I’m sure we’ll see you all at the Etsy Craft Party tonight, being held at made : The Indie Emporium Shop downtown. Not only will it be a fun time, to craft, visit, meet new friends, but it’s the perfect time of year to get in the spirit of the upcoming craft season. The holiday craft shows are getting ready to start and before you know it, it’ll be Christmas! (Mr. Crowe, how many days?)

The theme this year is “Wish You Were Here” meaning to evoke feelings, memories, art and of course crafts of your hometown. I think it’s great to take some time every once in awhile to reflect on home, the family, friends and culture that helped form you. We all live in culturally rich places and this reminds us to be in tune with them.

Here’s some inspiration to get the excitement going. I’m sure after coming to the Etsy Craft Party, you’ll want to host your own soon for friends. Let’s start with a crafty invite:

It might even be fun to have your craft party at a central location. I think sewing studios and coffee shops would be great.

With all the speculation about Friday’s Olympic Opening Ceremony, we decided to get in on the excitement and create our own Opening Ceremonies BINGO!  Play along as you watch and look for  the top athletes (including our favorite OKC Thunder players!), celebs, royalty, sites and sounds of London, and more.  The last rumors I heard about the extravaganza included Lord Voldemort battling Mary Poppins, with help from James Bond (for real.)…what have you heard?

Table Scape – School Auction Fundraiser

I had the opportunity to co-chair this year’s annual auction fundraiser for our school.  The auction is a very important event, as it raises a significant amount of  money for our PTA each year.  Our goal is, of course, to make as much money as we can, so our event budget is very low.  My task was to create a cohesive party theme that seemed thought-out and put-together without breaking the bank.  The result was not fancy of course, but it was casual, easy-going and welcoming.

A metal cactus wrapped in lights greeted guests at the door and set the tone for a Texas-inspired night of “Bids and BBQ.”

Each table was set with a craft paper runner (a friend/principal at a neighboring school found rolls of this paper at her school- so it was free!!), mason jars (which I already had) filled with inexpensive flowers, a roll of paper towels (as our BBQ dinner napkins) and a card with our logo on the front (thank you to Alayna at Ruby Jewel Studio!) and our sponsors on the back (most of our BBQ was donated!).

The reserved tables were set with galvanized containers filled with different succulents.  I just raided my back porch and storage to avoid buying anything new.  And simple dowel rods held the reserved signs that I just printed on my own printer.

Auction goers enjoyed a BBQ buffet that was also set on tables with white tablecloths and a craft paper runner.  This divided Pepsi box I found for $3 at a flea market started the buffet line and held plastic flatware tied in raffia.

In the end, the auction was a success, and a  great time was had by all.  Setting the room was simple, easy and best of all, almost everything was reusable or recyclable!  The event looked great and very little money went to decor – which meant more for the great programs that our PTA puts on for our school!

Kentucky Derby Party Planning: Serving Suggestions

The Kentucky Derby has some stiff competition this weekend with Cinqo de Mayo.  They’re both on Saturday, so it’s time to take sides.

If you are ready for the races, and lucky enough to have a festive Derby party to attend, then it’s time to get out your hats and bow ties.

The good news: Both styles have never been hotter, thanks to our collective  addiction to the Royal chapeaus, and the preppy hipster look of the bow tie. Here are a few ideas for the perfect Derby Day look:

1. Mint Julep cups, Beau Coups 2. Garden Flower Dress, Rebecca Taylor 3.  Two-tone straw hat, J. Crew 4.  Phillip Treacy hat, via Lousiville.com 5. Nine West sunglasses,  Macy’s 6. Blenheim bow tie, Beau Ties, Ltd.

And there are, of course, the classic Southern cocktails to savor.
My favorite  Derby memory is back in college when some friends and I tried to whip up some “authentic” juleps.

Let’s just say ours was more concoction than cocktail.

Before heading to that party, remember that it’s going to be about one-quarter horse and three-quarters lively spirits and fun. So don’t forget to eat!

Try a beginner’s mint julep recipe, courtesy of AMC. Here’s to a great day at the races!

Mint Julep

2 oz bourbon
8 sprigs of mint
1 tsp of sugar

1. Put mint and sugar with a dash of water in mixing glass.

2. Add shaved ice and bourbon. Shake until frosted and pour all into rocks glass. Garnish with a mint sprig.

Deco District Pop Up Shops!

 Deco District Pop Up Shops!

“Silver Bells” has always been my favorite Christmas song.  It’s about shopping, what did you expect?  But more than that, I have always loved the imagery it conjures up – bustling city sidewalks, filled with merry people enjoying the holiday season and shopping happily for their loved ones.  So when I heard that the Downtown Deco District was putting together a group of Pop-Up shops for the month of December, I was giddy with excitement!

I headed down to 5th and Boston for the soft opening on Monday to check out the goods, but the grand opening is TONIGHT from 5-8pm with carolers, Santa, live music and more…finally, a chance for my “silver bells” moment!

 Indie Emporium shop vignettes

My first stop was at our friends at Indie Emporium’s shop – they have several rooms dedicated to some of their core vendors, set up in true indie fashion with vignettes of various products including some adorable paper goods and prints, handmade jewelry and hair accessories, my favorite tea towels (above) and more!

Next to the Indie Emporium shop, our favorite atomic archaeologist (and Prairie Hive MANDAY contributor), Shane Hood, has set up a shop featuring a jam-packed room full of treasures.  I had to restrain myself from shopping for my own home while I was in here…he has tons of great barware, dishware, vintage Christmas decor, clocks and a few small furniture pieces as well.  Remember that cabinet from Issue One?  Multiply it by 100.  I definitely crossed a few people off my list in this shop!

Just down the hall, you can smell the Therganics room – I had never been in their shop in The Farm, but these soaps and bath products smell so fantastic I couldn’t resist…plus they use all natural ingredients and essential oils in all their products.  I can’t wait to lather up with the scents I bought (I practiced the one for you, one for me principle in this shop)!

Across the street, in the Philcade Building, there is also a bookstore, Bison and Bear men’s gift store, an art gallery and the Candy Castle.  On the corner is Odds and Ends, another great shop for handmade items like scarves, baby booties, jewelry and home goods.

In addition to finding some great unique gifts, it felt great to shop downtown, buy from local merchants and chat with the shop owners as I browsed.  This is such a great effort by the Deco District to boost downtown businesses and push for more downtown revitalization with some much needed retail!  I hope you’ll go down and visit and that you enjoy it as much as I did!

Great Weekend Shopping

Arts and crafts shows are great for weekend shopping.  Head out in the morning, meet up with your girlfriends, grab a coffee (or whatever your morning wake-up is) and leisurely stroll the aisles.  If you haven’t been to an arts and crafts show in a while, I would suggest that you try one out. This is the time of year where you will find quite a few.

Prairie Hive helped out with Indie Emporium last month.  And we will also be helping out with Alliday in December.  It’s perfect for holiday shopping.  You can find unique, handmade gifts that are truly one of a kind.  Plus you are supporting people who are talented and love what they do….what’s better than that?

This Saturday my church is having their Semi-Annual Arts and Crafts Show.  I’m on the planning committee and am excited that we have around 60 different vendors!  If you are free Saturday, come on out and do a little shopping…..

I also thought I would leave you with some websites that list multiple local arts and crafts shows…

Hopefully you can hit some up in the next couple of months.  If you aren’t from Oklahoma, check and see what local shows you can find.  I am sure there are plenty.  If you know of any in particular, leave a comment!

The Great Big Cookbook Swap…from Booksmart Tulsa and Prairie Hive

The Food52 Cookbook The Great Big Cookbook Swap...from Booksmart Tulsa and Prairie Hive

Have you checked out Food 52? It’s way more than a recipe website…it’s a food community – meant for sharing recipes, getting feedback, talking about food and more.  In addition, their readers wrote a cookbook! When they started the site, food writers and editors Amanda Hesser and Merrill Stubbs had a mission: to discover and celebrate the best home cooks in the country. Each week for fifty-two weeks, they ran recipe contests on their website, Food52.com, and the 140 winning recipes make up this book.

To celebrate the cookbook release, they are sponsoring a series of parties all over the country, and we are happy to be teaming up with Booksmart Tulsa to host a Cookbook Swap!

It’s simple: bring a cookbook, take one home.  We’ll also have food (from the cookbook, of course), prizes, giveaways and more…come join the fun!

Trend I Can’t Let Go Of: OMBRE

SVombrerug Trend I Cant Let Go Of: OMBRE

Image via House Beautiful

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably seen the Ombre trend rising in popularity.  It started in fashion, moved on to home decor, product design, and has now moved on through to just about anywhere a trend can go (see below).  Then why can’t I stop loving it?

Ombre somehow manages to be both subtle and bold…colors fading into one another with varying degrees of intensity or striping.  I’ve hesitated to commit to anything too permanent in my home, thinking the phase would pass…but I think I have a random table or two calling my name for a paint job.  Until I get to that…I’ve rounded up a few ways to wear/use ombre day to day.

It’s all over fashion…check out these great sweaters.  The scarf would be a great DIY, if you’re so inclined.  SNL and Bridesmaids star Kristen Wiig even rocked the trend at the Emmy’s this year, landing herself on tons of Best Dressed lists.

There are some great home products out there showcasing the trend…from textiles to furniture, check out Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie and the new West Elm for some great options.

Ombre has made it’s way into the wedding/party circuit as well…check out this fabulous centerpiece arrangement!  And how beautiful/delicious do these cakes look?  I think the layered one would be so fun to cut into!

Indie Emporium 2011

SVIndie 613x1024 Indie Emporium 2011

This year, we teamed up with Indie Emporium to help sponsor and participate in one of the largest Craft Shows in the area!  In addition to tons of handmade goods to shop from, the event also featured the first ever Iron Craft competition (think Iron Chef, but with crafty “ingredients”), which we competed in against the Make:Tulsa team.  It was a ton of fun…we were given a table of random craft supplies and a “mystery ingredient” – in our case, a t-shirt – and about 10 minutes to make something.  Needless to say, we were a bit nervous going against the Make: Tulsa group…we know several members and these are some super crafters for sure!  Considering that not all of our Hive girls (myself included) really consider crafting our forte, we thought we would be carrying a major handicap.  Once the t-shirt came out and we went into super speed mode, we somehow managed to pull it out and take home the (oh-so-cute) trophy!  I wish we had gotten an action shot in…ribbons were flying, glue guns were out…I even made a 1 minute mark attempt at adding a bracelet to our necklace, but failed miserably (hot-glued buttons…really?).  In the end, the t-shirt strip necklace, accented with some attractive poms, lace and ribbon, won us the prize (as Alayna is modeling below).

SV6294 Indie Emporium 2011

We (and by “we” I mean “Roxanne”) also ran the Make & Take…a booth where shoppers or kids could take a break and do a quick crafting lesson.  Roxanne pulled together a great idea from Saori weaving and taught us all to use leftover yarn, ribbons and fabric to make swatches that can be used by themselves (as coasters, trivets, etc.) or integrated with more fabric as a bag, pillow, etc.  The rest of the team even jumped into to make our own…it was fun and quite relaxing – we got in lots of good chatting time over a few hours!

And of course, we fit in some shopping…we saw some old friends AND I found some amazing new vendors that I can’t wait to feature in some upcoming posts and maybe even in Issue Four!
