DIY – Saori Weaving

When I craft or work on an art piece it is often time spent reflecting. I let go of the world around and focus on the motion, decisions and get lost in the process.  I believe that those who have trouble focusing or meditating should create and through creation will find a release that perhaps they’ve been unable to reach.

Please join us tomorrow at the Indie Emporium and have a small quick introductory craft to Saori style weaving.  First inspired by the portable version, I quickly became curious and found so many more inspiring woven pieces; I know what I’ll be picking up this winter!

This was the original inspiration and the following images are some that I could not resist.  Come visit Saturday from 12 – 5 pm at the Indie Emporium Craft Show held at Living Arts studio in downtown and we’ll compare notes.

DIY – Silk Scarves

GATHER MATERIALS

You will need silk fabric paint, silk fabric (I used ready made due to time constraints), paint brushes, paint palette or glass jars, newspaper, rags and/or sheets, trash bags and an open space.  I used all the colors labeled green, but ended up mixing in quite a bit of yellow with several of the colors that read more in the blue family.

PREPARE

I used my dining room table and covered with trash bags, then a sheet and newspapers.  The fabric needs to be suspended so that the surface underneath will not affect how the paint moves on the fabric.  This is usually done with a stretcher, but keeping the project low budget and on the fly, I improvised by tying string and a binder clip the the backs of my dining chairs.  Then I stretched the silk piece by attaching the binder clips to all four corners of the fabric.  You might have to move your chairs apart and around a bit to get the most even stretch possible.

PAINT & SALT

I just started experimenting by pouring some of each paint color into palette and applying to my fabric in large shapes.  I liked keeping a dark and light shade next to each other to allow for more dramatic bleeding.  I found that I achieved a better starburst effect with the salt if applied right after I finished with each color.  By painting to the edges and puddling a little paint around the binder clips, I eliminated the white edges.

DRY

You could leave the silk piece suspended where you painted it to dry, which will happen pretty fast. I found that pulling them down and hanging on the line allowed me to move to the next piece immediately and in the hot summer sun, they were dry in less than five minutes.  Put them somewhere safe for the next 24 hours before the next step.  Anywhere without moisture should be just fine,  I laid mine on a towel over night.

SET

You must set the dye in the fabric in order to make them durable and so they will not bleed when wet.  I chose  to use the Jacquard Dye set also due to time constraints, but believe you get the best color retention when steam setting.  I wish I had some tips to share here, but I just followed the package directions.  During the rinse stage, I used my washer on gentle setting and cold water.

I will say to not be too nervous when the water you dunk the scarves in turns very very green (or whatever main color you used), everything was fine in the end.  Next time I’ll try steam setting and let you know how that goes.

Also on the to try list: Eco Dyeing. I plan to enjoy my scarves as tables runners, light fall accessories, cushion covers, and maybe make some for future gift giving. I might try to use one on a skeleton lamp shade frame I’ve got. Do you have any thoughts on creative uses for these?

T.V. to Reality

Have you caught any episodes of ABC’s Mr. Sunshine on Wednesday nights?  I have a seen a few, and each time Crystal Cohen’s {actress Allison Janney} office catches my eye.  I love the color combo and the quirky feel.  I decided to look it up online and see what I could find.  Low and behold David A. Keeps, with the Los Angeles Times, wrote this great article on the set designs for both the home and office of Crystal Cohen.  As you will read in his article, he gives many of the sources for the office.  I thought it might be interesting to see if I could find similar objects that might be less expensive, but still have the same feel.

To start with, here is a photo of the office

Let’s start with the chairs.  LOVE them!  This is a great contemporary take on your traditional arm chair.  The Duralee fabric is designed by Thomas Paul.  It can be found here in Tulsa at Calico Corners, Interior Fabrics, and I am sure other fabric stores as well {I have personally drooled over it at the afore mentioned stores}.  In trying to keep down the costs, I would suggest definitely sticking with the fabric and using it to reupholster chairs that you already have or chairs that you find at an estate sale or in the clearance section at a local furniture store.  OR you can buy this adorable slipper chair from Target online for a mere $224.99!

Next let’s take a look at the white bookcases on the back wall.  They are a great display space with glass doors.  I am an admitted IKEA junky, so my mind automatically goes to the EXPEDIT bookcases…those don’t have large glass door options…so next in line is the HEMNES glass door cabinet for $325.

To fill those shelves with the bright orange and blue accessories I would head over to our local IO Metro store, Target, or Ross and see what I could find.  IO Metro has beautiful accessories in vibrant colors that are super afordable.  And you would be surprised at what you can find in the vase section at Ross!

Round mirrors are pretty popular these days.  I found this one at Pier 1 for $149.99.

No, it’s not exact, but it’s large and round and has great gold accents that makes it a great focal point in between those two blue lamps.  Those are great!  The actual ones cost about $200 a piece.  Which honestly I understand why….look how tall they are!  But, I did find a pretty good substitution from Crate and Barrel for $59.95.

Doesn’t have the same fun shape, but the color is there so I think it would do.  Especially since it’s a fraction of the original’s cost!

For the additional two chairs I would scower craigslist, etsy, and local antique shops to find a couple of old chairs that have a similar round back.  Then, I would spray paint the wood parts gold and find a great orange fabric and have them reupholstered.

The carpet in the office is from Interface FLOR.  They used two different colors of carpet tile to create a blocky pattern.  I love carpet tiles.  Working in the commercial Interior Design field, I specify similar ones all the time.  Check out the website and see all the different patterns and colors that they have….you can get super creative!

Finally, the wall color is Benjamin Moore Cool Aqua.  It’s a great backdrop for the office and allows the furniture and accessories to really stand out…..without being a bland neutral.  Blue and orange are complimentary colors, so they will always look great together!

The charm of this office is that it mixes traditional pieces with more contemporary colors and patterns.

Next time you see a room that you love in a magazine, on T.V., or in a movie, think about doing some research and making it work in your space with your budget!

Bedding by You

Recently, while searching for furniture for my new house, I stumbled across Inmod.com’s “Design Your Own Bedding” site… and it’s so cool!

You can customize bedding or pillows by choosing one of their many different patterns, then select a color for each (and every) aspect of the pattern.  I had so much fun just playing around with the different options!  Once you’ve created a pattern/color combination you like, you can place the bedding into a room scene (that you can also customize!) for the full effect before ordering your custom-designed-by-you bedding.  Check out these cool comforters I created in minutes!:

Current Attractions – Suzani

Suzani.  It’s been circulating my thoughts for months now and although I know it’s “trendy” I’ve always been one to follow my desires.  Given that it has origins in Uzbekistan as far back as the early 15th century, I think I’m safe in choosing to love it now.

If I had a piece of this fabric, I would pair it with the following to update the Man’s Den in my house. Luckily, said man is not opposed to floral patterns of this variety.

1. Arc TV Stand, Dania; 2. Gold Leaf Glass Lamp, Pier One; 3. 80-Hour Courting Candle, Sundance; 4. Todd Hase – Duval Side Table, ABC Home; 5. Faux Bois Carpet Tiles, Flor

Now that I’ve dreamed a bit about the room, I think it’s safe to say you will see a before and after of this space in the future. Some things I cannot change, the paint, floors, curtains, television and stereo equipment. I can definitely see the possibilities of working with my inspiration and my man to turn this room into a space I love as well.

More Suzani inspired goods for your day.
