Flat Screen Television Decorating Dilemma for Ask Us April!

“Dear Prairie Hive,

Help! This corner is the best spot in our living room for the television but the tall ceilings and low TV stand make the corner seem bare. Any tips to design around this awkward corner space (shelves? Wall décor?). We’d like to keep the entertainment unit sleek and avoid a bulky TV cabinet.

Leah H.”

First of all let me say that I love your wood floors and brick fireplace with the curved hearth! If you plan on keeping the current unit, I would go ahead and push the left side back so that it is square with both walls. Often, furniture placement feels unintentional when the angle is shallow. If the television needs to be angled for viewing, use a swivel mount to enable moving it while watching.

Since this is such a tight corner and the fireplace and mantle are a more natural focal point, I would plan on coordinating with the mantle decor rather than fighting it by creating a cohesive look for both areas. The other alternative would be to install a large piece of art just under the paint color change, but I would only recommend that if you can create a similar vignette on the right side of the fireplace for symmetry. Try something like a basket collection over the fireplace and leading over to the wall above the television.

Optimally the television would be lowered about 6″  so the horizontal lines will not line up with the lines of the mantle and hang it with a swivel wall-mount unit. This would allow freedom in choosing a base cabinet to house the electronics. A mid-century  or clean lined cabinet on tall legs gives the sense of space with less bulk. Consider going with a lighter finish to coordinate a bit more with the mantle or a medium toned wood finish, a little darker than the floor but with no red in it.

If the goal is to visually separate the media unit from the fireplace area, choose a true corner unit in a painted white finish. Stay with somewhat traditional or transitional lines to complement the style of trim and mantle woodwork. Then an opportunity arises to place a large round basket to corral toys or a stack of colorful floor pillows between the television unit and the brick hearth. This allows separate treatment for each space. Install a large statement piece above the mantle and flank it with tall floral arrangements, thin lamps or elaborate candlesticks. Really emphasize those choices so the fireplace area becomes the immediate focus.

When using an open unit, try to incorporate a few different textures. Perhaps stacking the media units would allow room for some folded blankets or a basket to corral remotes when not in use.

Once you’ve decided on exactly how you want to tackle this area, focus on the feel or design aesthetic you desire. Casual and natural, transitional, modern or eclectic. If another home resident (smile) wishes that the components work without opening doors, try frosted glass. My remotes have always functioned through the glass and then you have the best of both worlds. Plus an additional texture has been introduced without having to bring in other items.

I would also be sure to include many textures. I try to bring in something natural like woven baskets, glass, metal, and wood. Think decorative boxes, pillows, blankets, books, and vases or figurines. The Jonathan Adler animals are great for this and things like this are more readily available now or create your own version. Target is a great resource if you prefer not to scour around vintage shops and garage sales.

Let me know what you think! I hope I’ve not inundated you with too many choices, but depending on the other ares of the room, I would tackle this a few different ways. I hope you at least know where you’d like to start. Thanks for asking, this was a pertinent question for many.

Thanks to everyone that sent in questions last month! If you haven’t already, we would love to hear from you about what we can do to improve Prairie Hive Blog and Magazine!  Here are our quick reader surveys:

Scarves as Wall Art – Current Attractions

Wallflower Scarf from Orla Kiely

I have always loved scarves and fabric as wall art, hanging sarongs gathered from mine and my sisters travels way back in college. I’ve been taking a new interest in scarves since designing a young girl’s bedroom with an exotic flair and would love to pick up some new ones for my own collection. I have just the place for the Orla Kiely Wallflower Scarf above. Isn’t it beautiful?

It is so inspirational I immediately knew what I wanted to pair with it, so I set out to find just the right amount of gold, black and white. Yes, I’m still stuck on metal accents. I don’t think it’s going away any time soon since it started about 8 or 9 years ago and I just keep on thinking of more things to paint gold!

FLOS Spun Table Lamp from Utility Design

This was exactly the mix of mid-century style and Hollywood glam for me. Who could pass up an ultra shiny black lamp with such great lines as this one? The room I’m imagining is a sitting room off an entry, a casual place that doubles its use as my library and where I savor a cup of tea and catch up with friends. It needs to have some glamour I think.

Gold Leaf Round Table from One Kings Lane

I think I have a weakness for round, shiny side tables. I found about ten round, gold tables that I liked and finally chose this one because it is feminine without being over the top and simple and clean.  When in doubt simple and clean often win at my house, because they will blend more seamlessly with multiple styles in an eclectic space without cluttering.

I know that was short and sweet, but I’ve been having a slow computer (they say slow as molasses, but I think i could have poured out 5 jars of the stuff in the 1 hour and 9 minutes it took to load the PH site today). Needless to say I have much more to add, like this Modern Classic Leather Bench from Modern Classic Home and Furniture. But my patience is thin and now there is not enough time to watch this beast of a computer think before I must leave for work. 4×8 Plywood Desk Design Contest

We love to promote happenings in Tulsa and I thought it was past time to introduce Fab Lab Tulsa to you. This is the studio to join in order to bring your ideas to life. It is full of fun toys (advanced equipment) that is shared between members and fosters creativity. We had a meeting at the lab in October and I’ve been designing chairs in my mind ever since, a little something like this.

That is the 4×8 Contest that More Branding is hosting. They call for designing a desk from once 4×8 sheet of plywood in a friendly competition to foster creativity in the community. I think this will be an inspiring event to attend considering the variety of talent we have. Hope to see you there and I wouldn’t be surprised if some of you are entering!

Stacks of Wood

With fall in the air, I’m ready for fires in the fireplace and wood stacked nearby – partly because I love the coziness and the warmth of the fire, and partly because I just really love the look of stacked wood!

If I was up to a major project, I would consider trying to do something like this beautiful stacked wood wall,

LWwoodfireplace Stacks of Wood

or maybe this stacked wood fireplace.  So cool!

But, for now I’m going to have to start hauling the firewood inside and maybe I’ll consider one of the following…

 Stacks of Wood

1.  Wood Tiled 3-Drawer Dresser at West Elm  2.  BoBo Intriguing Objects Stacked Wood Side Table at Candelabra  3.  Mosaic Desk at Anthropologie  4.  Douglas Fir Trimmings Floor Mirror at Viva Terra  5.  Fendi Pequin Pump at Nordstrom  6.  Bina Coffee Table at I.O. Metro

…the perfect way to add a hint of the stacked wood look with a little less committment.

Touched-Up Treasures

My incredibly creative friend Meg over at Never A Dull Day recently posted her newest project – a dresser/changing table set for her soon-to-be born nephew.  It’s amazing!  She used his bedding as her inspiration and went to town with a paint brush.

A few months ago, she painted this argyle dresser/changing table for another nephew as well.  Talented, no?  And a tad bit crazy.

With Meg’s inspiring post of the newest of her never-ending creations, I was reminded yet again how much I adore painted furniture.  Whether it’s with a funky pattern or just a bold color, a coat of paint can do wonders for transforming great furniture items, which can then transform a room.  I also love that it gives old, tired pieces new life and a renewed purpose!

Here are a few more painted pieces that I think are pretty nifty:

I have a piece very similar to this that I also use for a tv stand.  (Coincidentally, I picked up at an antique store for cheap when I was visiting the afore-mentioned Meg!)  But the wood on mine is so beautiful, I don’t think I could bring myself to paint it.  But I do love this color!…

DIY: Bookcase Embellishment

It seems I have developed a new obsession.  I’ve found myself, of late, drooling over storage units that sport a wallpapered back.  For instance:  When I made my recent trek to the Dallas IKEA, I returned a few times to a particular room vignette to gaze at this linen cabinet.

It had me mentally rearranging all the furniture in my house to see if it could somehow accommodate this piece.  (It couldn’t).  I could just imagine it full of soft white blanket or well worn quilts.  For some reason there was just something about it that caught my eye…  I then realized what captivated me was the simple elegance of the wallpapered back panel.  I didn’t end up bringing this linen cabinet home with me, but I did file away for future use the idea of adding wallpaper to a storage piece.

Last week as I was perusing Apartment Therapy, I then found I was lingering on this image.

I love the bold color.  I love the open shelving.  And I LOVE the papered backsplash!  And again, I was scheming ways I could use this concept in my own home.  (I love images that stir your imagination!  Don’t you??)

I didn’t spend too much time thinking on this new obsession of mine as it’s been a busy, busy month for me.  Which means there should be no surprise that in my (sparse) spare time, I’m still getting settled into my new home.  All the unpacking is done but I don’t have a place for everything quite yet and still lack some desired furniture items.  Mostly, I’ve been needing bookcases to store my many books, photo albums and office supplies.  I did buy a bookcase for my bedroom on that IKEA trip (I’ll show you that transformation once it’s complete), but I still lacked one for my office/craft room.

In my attempt to get piles of said items off of my office floor, I purchased an inexpensive 3-shelf bookcase from Target for about $16.  It  definitely lacked inspiration, but would get the job done while I continued to hunt garage sales and antique stores for something more permanent.

Then I recently found myself in Tuesday Morning and stumbled upon a box of pretty drawer liners for $5.99.  BAM!  It hit me!- spice up that boring bookcase with a wall-papered back!  I bought some spray adhesive, assembled the bookcase and added the drawer liner to the back panel, being sure to align the pattern as best as I could.  It’s nothing fancy, but it does add interest and gives this plain, boring bookcase some personality!
