Shandy time

Happy Memorial Day!

Hopefully, weather permitting, you are at the lake or lounging by the pool on this long weekend.

No matter where you are, it’s a great time for a new, refreshing drink. May I introduce you to the Shandy.

It’s literally a two-step drink — half beer and half carbonated lemonade.

It’s great for the girl who likes an occasional beer, but doesn’t want the heaviness of it. Sarah and I indulged in these during the Super Bowl and they were delish.

For beer, I chose Boulevard Wheat, which is made in Kansas City, Mo. It’s refreshing and has a light citrus flavor.

Next, add a splash (or more) of the sour and sweet sparkling lemonade — my choice is San Pellegrino Limonata. Pucker up!

And voila! Summer’s here. Enjoy and have a safe weekend.

Summer setting

I know that spring has just arrived — we’ve had weird weather here on the prairie in the last few months.

Yet I’m already inspired and excited for summer — not the unbearable heat that will likely arrive in 2 or 3 weeks — but for the color.

Inspired by the bright Gerber daisies I planted in my yard (on my annual gardening spree) and by the fun colors of Cinco de Mayo, I’m determined to add a little spice to my kitchen accessories. A girl’s gotta cook stylishly, no?

It all started with these….

I spied these beautiful mini bowls at Anthropologie a few weeks ago on the sale table. I bought a stack for less than $12, and use them all the time for sauces with meals, desserts or quick snacks.

I love my everyday dishes from Pottery Barn, but after a few good years, I’m ready for some brighter meals. I’ve been a fan of Fiestawear forever, and I think I’ll start with this server to break up my white. Love its cheery disposition.

Next, I found these handy mixing bowls from Crate & Barrel. And they’re a steal, too.

And finally, to make the table look great, I’m ending up right where the shopping spree began, at Anthropologie (sorry, our store in Tulsa is fairly new, so we are still very excited about its existence!).

This gorgeous tablecloth will make all my summer dinner parties that much more fun. Well, the ones I dream up anyway…usually, these fabulous parties consist of my husband and me.

Happy early-summer dreaming!

Mod Moms

It’s been a girlie couple of weeks, thanks to the Royal Wedding — wasn’t it fantastic?!

And celebrating all things female continues this week with Mother’s Day on Sunday. Do you have the perfect gift yet?

Maybe you’re used to buying your mom a nice bouquet of flowers each year — always a classic and well-received choice.

But if you’re in a rut there are plenty of updated choices for the busy mom on the go.

I know a lot of young moms whose husbands need a push in the right direction from time to time, so here are some fun and unexpected gift  choices for moms of all ages.

The Reader

Most busy moms do not have a lot of time to read, so every word must count. If you’ve got a Kindle-lover in your family, here’s a great way to dress it up. These kate spade Kindle cases are so stylish and sentimental for fans of classic literature like, “The Great Gatsby,” “Great Expectations,” and “The Importance of Being Earnest.”

(I must admit I got this one for my birthday and I love it as much as I love my Kindle. Is that bad? Nah.)

The Garden Diva

Last week, I wrote about my secret shame — that I’m not a huge fan of gardening. If your mom loves to enjoy a fresh herb, but doesn’t have the time or space to grow her own, here’s the solution: The Growbottle from Uncommon Goods is made from a recycled wine bottle (nice touch) and allows the sun to shine in while your hydroponic herbs grow. Very cool!

The Shoe Collector

Every mom needs a good flat, and I can’t think of a better way to show appreciation than with a pair of these stylish slippers from a great Tulsa boutique called The Glass Slipper. They’re super stylish and practical, and the snakeskin design will go with just about anything. Hmm. Think I might buy a pair for me. Cats count as “kids,” right?

The Fabulous Female

Now, here’s a fantastic way to celebrate mom — with some bubbly! And not just any champagne will do, either. The makers of Moet & Chandon have created a custom way to toast mom at MyMoet. She will feel like a superstar when she receives her bottle of champagne with a custom message written just for her in Swarovski crystals.

Cheers!

Herbs in a hurry

herb12 Herbs in a hurry

I have a confession: I’m not much of a gardener.

I know I’m supposed to love it, but frankly I’d rather be whipping up something in the kitchen or, let’s be real, shopping.

So, every spring I spend exactly one day planting my container herb garden, and it’s a breeze thanks to several years’ experience.

Last year, I bought two large planters from Home Depot and a few bags of organic potting soil. So this weekend, all I had to do was clean out the containers, stir up the remaining soil — it was full of earthworms, which means it’s well aerated — and plant away!

My parsley's ready to go.

I love basil — it’s by far the most versatile herb for me. So I planted two basil plants in one large planter — it can grow really tall. The second large container is my Italian herb garden with oregano, flat-leaf Italian parsley, and dill.

In a smaller pot,  I planted fragrant rosemary. And in a tiny pot I decided to try out some cilantro this summer, even though it’s really hard to grow.

It took about 20 minutes to arrange my herbs and nestle them into the soft soil. One bit of advice: follow directions on your plants for spacing, etc. Amazingly, I learned that the experts know what they’re doing!!

Clockwise from top left: Rosemary (in brown pot), basil, Italian herb container (with oregano, dill and parsley), and cilantro,

I can’t wait until my basil grows in. I’ll serve up some of my famous (and very garlicky) bruschetta.

Bruschetta for Two

Ingredients:

Three or four ripe plum tomatoes, or about 2 cups cherry tomatoes (heirloom varieties have the best color in the summer)

2 cloves garlic, minced (or more to taste — I’m a garlic freak!)

4-5 large basil leaves (or about 7-8 medium leaves)

1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil (now’s time for the good, more expensive stuff)

Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Steps:

1. Seed tomatoes, and cut into a chunky dice (for cherry tomatoes, simply cut in half or quarters)

2. Julienne basil by rolling leaves into a cigar shape, then cutting crosswise into tiny shreds.

3. Add olive oil, salt and pepper, garlic and basil to tomatoes. Stir.

4. Serve with slices of toasted baguette, crackers or as a garnish to fish, chicken or whatever. It’s usually gone before we get to the entrees!

Street Cred

Over the weekend, Kim and I checked out the TYPros event Street Cred: Polishing the Pearl.  For several weeks, volunteers spent Saturdays cleaning up empty buildings in Tulsa’s Pearl District, throwing out trash and gussying up the area, then for the weekend, they asked local businesses to set up pop-up shops in the cleaned up spaces.  In addition to the shops and food vendors, they also had musicians, street performers and even a kids area to keep the wee ones occupied.  It was a great “what if” scenario for this often overlooked part of town, and we hope to see some of these pop-ups turn permanent! Here are a few shots I took while we perused the Pearl (can you tell I was having fun with Instagram?):

And here are a few images from our friend Briana at Bifftastica.  She had a booth in the Indie Emporium shop and was there all weekend to catch the festivities.  Check out her Etsy shop as well for all kinds of crafty jewelry goodness!

The weather definitely cooperated Saturday and a good time was had by all.  We can’t wait to see this event again next year as they clean up another part of town.  Mad props to all the volunteers who made this event a success!
