Maximizing Minimal Space

We were so inspired by how much style the Matlachs packed into their 722 square foot home that was featured in our newly released Spring issue of Prairie Hive mag!  They took advantage of every nook and cranny to make their small space not only house all the necessities they need, but also be an amazing show piece.

With this in mind, we thought we would share a few quick tips on how to make a square-footage-challenged room feel generous and how to maximize an area that is limited in space.

First, consider using a light-colored paint (or better yet – crisp white – like the Matlachs did in the majority of their home).  It creates the appearance of a larger expanse of wall, which makes the room appear larger.  Try to avoid using dark, heavy colors in small areas as it will end up feeling smaller and cave-like.  In the same way, steer clear of heavy-feeling furniture pieces, and stick with more delicate options.

Don’t be afraid to use color, but use it sparingly and in big impact ways.

Even in a cozy space, using a few, big impact pieces is great!  Avoid the mindset that you have to fill a small space with a bunch of small items.  This makes a room very visually chaotic.  Grouping similar items to make a collection can be a good alternative to strewing them out across your house.  Or pick a few of your favorite tchotchkes, and weed out the unneeded ones.  If at all possible, everything should have a dual purpose.  Try to make it functional as well as stylish.  If it doesn’t have a purpose, consider removing it.  Keep it big and minimal!

Go up! Use that vertical space!  Every available corner is subject to use.  Make good use of the dead space under the bed.  Claim a closet for a bigger purpose.

Lots of light!  Use windows, lamps, recessed can lights – whatever it takes!  Even the use of mirrors can help bounce light around a room, making it appear larger.  It also reflects space to trick your mind into thinking you are in a larger space than you actually are.  Don’t let your room feel like a cave.

Use space under the stairs… or IN the stairs like Matlachs’ very clever built-in storage!

Of course, bunk beds, or loft beds, can often be a functional and creative use of space.

Clothes Valets – Organization for a Smooth Morning

Stainless Steel Flip Down Valet Hook from The Container Store

I’ve been on an organizing kick around the house lately and I’ve decided to approach my changes from the top down. Or rather, from the beginning to the end, of my day that is. In order to create smooth, stress-free mornings, I’ve decided to implement the use of a valet.

I’m in no shape to choose clothing in the morning, plus it’s much less disrupting if I’m not running around gathering shoes, ironing skirts, finding a jacket, oops, I forgot my earrings and oh yeah, I really should eat something before I leave.

Looking for a solution, I found these, but I think I’m going to tackle a DIY version this weekend.

If you like simple and lack floor space, I think the folding hook above is great. And this bright red bridle hook below could stand in for unconventional art while it’s not working hard holding tomorrow’s outfit. The simple over door rod might even hold a week’s worth of choices.

I love myself some function and organization and sometimes traditional too. Here’s a great “everything” option and a more streamlined version with a more traditional look.

These next two are my favorites, hands down. While one can fold away which is great for storage or even leaning against the wall behind the door, it still has all the things I want in a valet. The other, well. It’s the Hans Wegner Valet Chair. There’s not much more to say about that.

Even though I finally found an option I’d have no problems bringing into my house and that would function in most of the ways I require, I’ve decided to forgo ready made. I have an idea and I’m really looking forward to finding a sliver of time to implement it this weekend.

On a completely unrelated note, I just had lunch at Oui3 on Brookside. Had no idea this place was there but went for a business meeting and was pleasantly surprised. I had the Chiffonade Kale with Bacon and Poached Egg. Wonderful! There were also really tasty looking/smelling BLT’s and Open Faced Chicken Sandwiches on the table. It’s not too often I think I’ll go back to an eating establishment, but I’ll be returning to this one.

Since we’re out on a tangent, if you’re still with me, you must check out Brandi Carlile (she really deserves her very own post). Tickets to the show last night made an enjoyable gift, she’s got a beautiful, strong voice, great band, and put on an entertaining and personal show at the Cain’s last night. So glad we have friends that share their music finds with us.

Have a great weekend!

MANDAY: A Man’s Perspective on Pinterest

I’m an early adopter of technology when I can be. I like to beta test new apps, and I go crazy trying to get access to new social networking sites to try out.  Anything new and I want to play with it.  Anything except Pinterest.  When I first saw Pinterest, I was not a fan.  I tried it for a day on my wife’s account and wasn’t impressed.  After scrolling through page after page of DIY wedding ideas, home décor, baby animals, dresses, nursery plans, Ryan Gosling, shoes, purses, hair styles, I wrote Pinterest off as something for girls.  The wife kept bugging me to try it out and raving about Pinterest so finally I gave in. The snarky side of me created a board of things with the word poop in them.  That’s where Pinterest and I parted ways for about a year.  As I was getting geared up for Lent this year, Christine suggested I try looking at Pinterest for recipes.  I gave in and gave Pinterest another look.  I made my first board, started pinning, and almost immediately other people were repining…talk about validation.  So I started asking myself why I hadn’t found many other guys active on Pinterest?

With 65% of the users on Pinterest are women who are driving 80% of the traffic, it’s easy to see why some men are hesitant to take the Pinterest plunge, and others have started “Pinterest for Men” sites like Gentlemint, Manteresting, or Dartitup.    While there’s nothing wrong with these sites, I don’t really think they’re needed.  Pinterest is great, even for us.  Here’s how to get started:

-  Find something you’re interested in.  I love to cook, so recipes were my gateway drug to a Pinterest addiction.  I created a board that was specifically for recipes that would be fun to try during Lent, and it exploded from there.  I had tried saving recipes on several sites, in Google Docs, in a binder, and so many other ways, none of which really did what I wanted. Now I open my Pinterest at dinner time, click a board, find a picture that looks good like this:

and I’m good to go.

-  Find your friends.  I mean your real ones.  Link your Pinterest to Facebook and start following friends.  This will help you find some cool stuff and learn a little more about your friends.

-  Grow your footprint.  Make new boards.  As you’re making boards, be sure to categorize them so others can find you.  When you find something like a DIY steampunk USB drive, you’re going to want others to see it.  I mean, who doesn’t want to make this :

-  Build your wish list.  I’m always finding cool stuff I want, but when my birthday or Christmas comes around, I can NEVER come up with good ideas.  So, I have a wish list on Pinterest with things I want, and my wife knows it.  When it’s time to shop, she can pull up my board (and forward on) and I know I’m going to get some cool stuff.  Just because it’s on my list doesn’t mean I’ll get it; I can’t imagine anyone would buy $900 knives like these, but I can dream, right?

-  Use it to shop.  I can pull up my wife’s Pinterest account when it’s time to get her something that shows how much she means to me, and I know I’m in for a win.  Next month is our 8th anniversary, and I may have found this on one of her boards

-  Replace your bookmarks.  I have bookmarks, but when I go to look at them, they can be overwhelming.  With Pinterest, you can look quickly at the pictures and find what you’re looking for without reading through a list of links.

A new dashboard for Pinterest called Pinerly is getting ready to launch, which is supposed to help organize Pinterest and give you stats on your account.  It looks cool, and I’ve signed up to hopefully get access early.

So guys, if I’ve convinced you to join me as one of the Pinterest minority, follow my boards and I’ll follow you back so we can share some manly stuff.

Chaos Simplified

Organizing is one of my favorite pastimes.  It’s true.  And sad.  The clothes in my closet are hung in color order, and my sock drawer is organized in the same manner.  I’m a list maker.  Don’t put it past me to make a list of all the lists I need to make.  I could spend all day in an office supply store, wandering around and dreaming of just how organized my home would be if I had this pretty binder or those colorful paper clips.  I need help.  It’s gotten so bad that a couple of birthdays ago I actually asked for (and received) two things – a label maker and a day planner.  True story.

I do have a phone that could also be used for list-making, schedule keeping, etc., and I have tried using it exclusively.  But I couldn’t hang.  I’m just a ‘like to physically cross it off the list’ kind of girl.  I currently have 3 notebooks in my (giant) purse:  my day planner, a long term to-do and to-buy notebook, and one in which I keep my Prairie Hive notes and blog ideas.  Always looking for new organizing tools that I could put to use, I’m a sucker for notebooks and anything that can create a list.  And if you add happy colors and a whimsical design to it… I’m sold!  Here are a few items I have come across recently that have caught my eye.

Check out this cute business card holder/address file box.  A fun way to spice up such a mundane part of life.
