I thought a little of a winter Emerald Green – the 2013 Color of the Year  - was a great way to kick off January…I loved this un-preppy take on emerald green and leopard.  Black hardwood floors are both modern and provide a great dramatic backdrop for almost any color palette.  Like a green wool coat, a green sofa would definitely be a big investment, but if you’re in love with the color, why not?  Green can go many different directions, so you could change up the vibe of the space as your tastes change.  The casual gray flannel ottoman is a good counterpoint to the fancier leather chair, like a good pair of Chuck Taylors.

Sure, I could have gone with a plaid/mustard/burgundy combo for a fall look, but this one is just so much more fun!  The camel coat grounds the brights and the black accessories toughen up a classic piece.  A perfect irreverent approach to a modern but classic room.

Summer Pattern Mix: Outfit to Room

I absolutely loved this summery outfit, and the idea of taking great basics like a leather bag and striped tee to ground a more seasonal piece like the skirt.  The basics are preppy, but the little bit of fun added by the floral and the turquoise make it not-too-serious.  The idea of doing the same thing in a room, with an easily changed rug and accessories, makes perfect sense to lighten up a more traditional feeling space for summer!

Brights + Black: Outfit to Room

A black blazer over a patterned dress is one of my all time favorite outfit standbys, so when I saw this look I thought it would make a perfect room inspiration!  Some people shy away from lots of pattern, both in clothes and interiors, but many are really just as versatile as solids.  The bright patterned skirt (as a rug in the room) could be paired with so many different combos, so you can keep changing your look as the mood strikes!

Outfit to Room – Happy New Year Edition!

It’s always been my opinion that New Year’s Eve – whether your plans involve game night at home or a big party – is the time to bring out the sequins.  It just doesn’t seem right to countdown at midnight without them.  This mix of warm and cozy paired with sparkle on top of more sparkle somehow takes it down a notch and elevates the look at the same time.  For my New Year’s Outfit to Room Edition I decided to do a little party planning as well, and dreamed up a permanent room with a bit of this look, blinged out for a party.  Enjoy!

Outfit to Room: Autumn Unexpected

Have you guys checked out the style column on designlovefest?  I love to pop over there weekly for inspiration – the quirky, fun style plus the fantastic photography always get me in the mood to pull something unexpected out of my closet!  Although fall has technically been here for a few weeks, we are just starting to get the consistently cool(ish) weather that means we are done with the 80s and 90s for a while.  Hooray! I loved this outfit when I saw it a few weeks ago and have been hanging on to it for room inspiration:

OK, OK – so I may have broken my own “accessible” design rule with this lamp, but how could I not?  Flocked.  Hot Pink.  Lamp.

My favorite thing about the outfit here is how she mixed in some unexpected brights with a more traditional fall color palette.  The turquoise and fuchsia pump it up just a bit.  Plus, who doesn’t love a little (faux) fur?

Outfit to Room: Uptown Eclectic

This might be one of my favorite outfits ever.  I don’t know this girl, but I want to be her.  The daring mix of prep with modern, casual with dressy and pattern on pattern have me sorting through my own closet to see if I can even come close.  The room was equally fun to put together and would be a great way to incorporate some existing pieces, hand me downs or antiques in a fresh, youthful setting.  So on to it:

Antique Glass and Brass Side Table, John Salibello.

The chaise is a standard piece with customizable fabric…there were several stripes to choose from within this manufacturer’s selection, or you could easily re-create something like this by re-upholstering an existing piece.  The rug is a standout – a cowhide could also be a fun look, if you’re into that sort of thing.  However, here the modern abstract balances out some of the more traditional pieces in the space.  Like the necklace in the outfit, the chandelier adds just the right girly touch to the room, as do the coral pillows (as well as adding a bright pop of color).  The antique table and egg are delicate but classic, adding a bit of masculinity to the room, as does the leather magazine tote – a nice counterpoint to the swirls of the chandelier.

Outfit to Room – Well Traveled Teal

Two of my biggest loves: fashion and design.  World are colliding a new series – Outfit to Room.  I’ll take a fashion statement and show you how you can take inspiration from what you love on the pages of Vogue and translate it into one of your spaces!

First up, the Outfit:

I spotted this look a while back and the breezy summer vibe caught my attention right away.  The non-traditional mix of patterns and accessories added just the right combination of tough and girly to this shorts and tank combo.

The Room:

1. Teal Curtain Panels, overstock.com.  2. Ribbed Mirror, T.A. Lorton.  3. Glass Link Chandelier, West Elm.  4. Pearl Mosaic Urn, I.O. Metro. 5. Felt Flower Pillow, Target. 6. Greenwich Love Seat, Pottery Barn. 7. Vintage Brass Roadrunner, Vintage Pickins on Etsy. 8. Essex Dhurrie Ottoman, West Elm. 9. Crinkled Plaid Throw, anthropologie.com.

Bring this gorgeous dramatic teal color into your space with pleated draperies pooling on the ground.  The image above is faux silk (gasp!), but I also found some teal linen fabrics and other great custom drapery options at Ballard Designs and Smith + Noble, or take a trip to your local fabric store and pick out something you like! The camel colored sofa above serves the same function as a wardrobe staple like khaki shorts – keep the main items basic, and you can switch out the accessories with your moods or the seasons.

I am a sucker for kilim, so I immediately fell for the model’s bag in the outfit shot.  Shortly after, I got an email featuring West Elm’s new arrivals, chock full of kilim pieces like the ottoman above.  Like the knotted scarf, the lightweight throw will provide just the right amount of warmth this summer when the A/C gets a bit aggressive.

Now for the fun part: accessories! Layering necklaces is one of my personal favorite looks – it can elevate an outfit and make the most basic pieces look instantly pulled together.  The same is true in your home.  The chandelier’s glass adds a touch of sparkle to the room, but the links toughen it up a bit.  The mirror, found at Cherry Street favorite T.A. Lorton, brings in the creamy colors from the kilim, matching the rustic vibe as well.  The black pillow, pearl urn and brass roadrunner (from an Okie Etsy shop) are quirky, girly, a little funky – and finish out the look to a tee!
