Anti-Valentines Day Party – It’s Not Me, It’s YOU!

antival Anti Valentines Day Party Its Not Me, Its YOU!

For a chef’s wife, Valentine’s Day, along with New Year’s Eve and assorted other holidays is one of the loneliest out there – they cook a romantic meal for everyone else while you cry into your wine and clear out your DVR (OK, maybe it’s not quite that bad)… Anyone else out there HATE Valentine’s Day?  It’s always seemed so contrived and forced, but even for an old married gal like myself, the prospect of sitting home alone is a little depressing.  What’s a girl to do?  Throw an ANTI Valentine’s Day party!  Celebrate singlehood (or a dateless night) with other like-minded friends and forget about all the sappy romance stuff!

The It’s Not Me, It’s You theme is my personal favorite, but if you want a few other slogan ideas, try:

-Cupid is Stupid

-Love Stinks, Let’s Drink!

-Eat, Drink and Be Single!

These can be used on invitations, banners, or signs throughout the party.

Next, food.  Valentine’s Day is all about the sweets, so check out these adorable “Broken Heart” Cupcakes made by Alter {Egos} Cupcakery here in Tulsa.

For the realllly bitter guests, check out these BitterSweets candies, or make your own cookies with catty slogans directed at your exes… (Note: I’m really sad that the HAD BTR one got smeared…and that they wouldn’t let me take the oh-so-effective FU on television).

Last but not least – entertainment.  Take out your frustrations on cupid by bringing in a heart shaped piñata for guests to beat.  This one was made by Christine from Made: The Indie Emporium Shop, and really – it’s too pretty to break.  Her DIY was so simple but turned out beautifully – just find a heart shaped box (chipboard at Hobby Lobby is ideal for breaking later), cut fringe from colored paper of your choice, and use double stick tape to attach it in rows to the box.  Lovely!

Another idea I loved was making a dartboard for your guests to attach photos of their exes to….check out my celebrity jerk test model and more on my Great Day Green Country segment today!

Super Bowl Survival Guide

Time to get ready!  Kick-off is right around the corner!  This Sunday, February 3rd marks Super Bowl XLVII when the Baltimore Ravens will take on the San Francisco 49ers in New Orleans.  I love the Super Bowl.  While I can definitely cheer on a good football game, my entertainment mostly centers around the gathering of friends and the stuffing of face… but I enjoy it nonetheless!

If you aren’t a football fan and will be dragged to a watch party this weekend, let me try to help by giving you a few reasons you should get in the spirit.  First of all, it means the end of football season with no games again until late summer.  You can celebrate that, right?

But more interestingly, the head coaches of these two teams are brothers – Jim and John Harbaugh!  (I believe the sports world has christened this game the HarBowl).  How cool is that?!  I bet their parents are as proud as can be.  And what a nifty rivalry there will be on the field this year.

Of course the entertainment features are always the highlights.  This year Alicia Keys will be singing the National Anthem, while Beyonce will be performing the Half-Time Show.

Food is always a big draw at any party, especially a Super Bowl party!  Bite size foods are big hits for sports crowds.  You don’t have to sit at a table to eat, and you can mingle while munching.  Here are a few great ideas for some yummy finger foods:

Mini corn dogs – one of my favorites.  These are already on my list to bring to the shindig I’ll be attending.

Zucchini fritters!  Now this is an unique idea I can get behind.

Commercials are probably the #1 reason the big game has so many viewers.  After you find off a food coma, check out some fun Super Bowl commercial games.  They definitely help you stay engaged with the group and interested in the game, even if you don’t know the rules of football.

Here is a cool commercials Bingo game.  Style Me Pretty offers a free printable template!

Football Fete: Tailgating Tips

Football season is officially in full swing!  And while I enjoy a good ‘ol collegiate rivalry match-up, I especially love the social aspect of attending a game.  Tailgating is a classic way to get pumped up for the big game as well as get in some quality time with friends.   Provide some bite-size snacks, a little alma mater-inspired decor and some games to charge up the competitiveness, and you’ve got yourself a great tailgating party!

This is what my dream tailgate would look like- bright, cheerful decor, easily edible foods and a cooler full of beverages.

If grilling at your party, a personalized steak branding iron would be the perfect touch for a fanatic’s burger!  (Also makes for a fantastic Christmas gift idea!)

No tailgating party is complete without some games on hand to work off all the delicious snacks and to pass the pre-game time.  The classics of corn hole, ladder toss and coin toss never get old!  And the customization with your team’s logo makes it that much sweeter.

Of course you have to sport your team colors in style, yet be comfortable enough to survive hours of tailgating followed by a lengthy game.  And Fall can be a tricky season, especially when your team has an evening game.  Tailgating in the warm sun can very easily turn into bleacher-sitting in the chilly night air.  So be sure to layer so that your outfit is suitable for any weather.

Robot Cupcakes

Hopefully you have had the time to flip through our new Prairie Hive Issue Five online magazine that came out yesterday.  If you have, then these adorable cupcakes may have caught your eye….

PH5 CTS 15 Robot Cupcakes

With a robot themed children’s party I set out to create a Robot cupcake.  I started with sketches at a couple of our meetings…to which the other girls politely nodded in agreement (while probably thinking, uh-huh, we’ll see).  I then moved on to roaming the baking aisles at Target and the cake decorating aisles at Michael’s and Hobby Lobby.  A couple of key items caught my attention right away.  The adorable little candy eyes (found at both Target and Michael’s) and the jumbo marshmallows.  With these two items, and a little trial and error, the Robot cupcake finally came about.

Here is what you will need:

PH5 CUPCAKE BLOG 11 Robot Cupcakes

Chocolate cupcakes (try my Chocolaty Chocolate Chip Cupcakes!)

Jumbo Marshmallows

Pretzel Sticks

Candy Melts (available in multiple colors at Michael’s)

Candy Eyes (available at Target and Michael’s)

Dots

Black Licorice Bites

White Decorating Gel (available at Michael’s)

Toothpicks

Drying rack

Cupcake Icing

Silver Cupcake Liners

Step 1:  Insert two toothpicks into one flat side of the marshmallow.  This will help when you go to dip the marshmallow in the candy melts.

PH5 CUPCAKE BLOG 2 Robot Cupcakes

Step 2:  Using the two toothpicks, dip the marshmallow into the candy melts (simply follow the directions on the package for melting the candy).  You will want to use a small, deep container so that you cover as much of the marshmallow as possible.

Pull the marshmallow out of the candy melts and flip over so that the toothpicks point down when you set the marshmallow on the drying rack.  This is a bit tricky and it helps if you have someone helping as you set the marshmallows on the drying rack.

Once all of your marshmallows are dipped allow them to dry until the candy is hard(you can speed up the process by placing the drying rack in your refrigerator for a few minutes).

PH5 CUPCAKE BLOG 3 Robot Cupcakes

Step 3:  While the marshmallows are drying assemble your Robot antennas.  Using the pretzel sticks you want to gently insert them into the flat side of the Dots candy.  You may need to twist a little bit, but be careful because the pretzel can snap.

PH5 CUPCAKE BLOG 4 Robot Cupcakes

PH5 CUPCAKE BLOG 5 Robot Cupcakes

Step 4:  To make the Robot’s mouth you will need the black licorice bites and the white decorating gel.  Cut the licorice bites in half and then draw a straight line on them with the white gel.

PH5 CUPCAKE BLOG 111 Robot Cupcakes

Step 5:  Add the pretzel antennas to the Robot.  To do this you will want to use a toothpick to start the hole for the pretzel antenna.  Push the toothpick gently into the marshmallow and move in circular motions to make the hole big enough for the pretzel.

PH5 CUPCAKE BLOG 6 Robot Cupcakes

PH5 CUPCAKE BLOG 7 Robot Cupcakes

Step 6:  For the Robot ears you will insert a toothpick through marshmallow.  You want the toothpick to stick out just a little bit on each side so that you can attach Dots candy to each side.

PH5 CUPCAKE BLOG 9 Robot Cupcakes

PH5 CUPCAKE BLOG 10 Robot Cupcakes

Step 7:  Attach the eye candies and mouths to the marshmallow.  To do this, melt some more of the candy melts (you can also use almond bark if you ran out of the candy melts like I did) and dot a little bit on the back of each eye candy and mouth.  While marshmallows are laying flat gently press each on.  Before standing the marshmallows up make sure the “glue” has dried (doesn’t take long).

PH5 CUPCAKE BLOG 12 Robot Cupcakes

Step 8:  Ice the cupcakes!  Because the marshmallows are so big, you don’t need to ice the entire cupcake.  Leave a hole in the center.  This is helpful because when you press your cupcake down the icing will hide any bits of the marshmallow that didn’t get covered by the candy melts.

PH5 CUPCAKE BLOG 13 Robot Cupcakes

Step 9:  Press the marshmallow on top of the cupcake.

PH5 CTS 15 Robot Cupcakes

And there you have it!  Cute little Robot cupcakes!  You can be as creative as you want with all the different color combinations.

You might also remember seeing some of these guys in the magazine….

Summer Garden Party

This past weekend I attended a Garden Party hosted by our friend Briana, of Bifftastica, and her husband.  This yard-working duo kicked it into high gear to get their backyard whipped into shape in time for this shindig, and their sweaty evenings and weekends have definitely paid off.  They generously wanted to share the fruits (or vegetables) of their labor with dear friends!

I got to enjoy this fantastic yard and yummy treats with old friends and some new- including the lovely Christine Sharp-Crowe and Thom Crowe, founders of Tulsa’s Indie Emporium and make:Tulsa.  (So nice to meet you guys!!!  Hope to see you again soon!)

Despite the heat of Oklahoma’s hottest weekend thus far (with a high hovering around 98-degrees… not to mention the heat index), the outdoor venue was quite enjoyable.  The shade from the mature trees was a huge help, as was the nice steady breeze.  I guess there is something to be said for the wind that comes sweeping down the plain!

The large selection of homegrown vegetables makes it handy for them to toss a leafy salad, cook up some eggplant, or stir up some salsa.
