first sign of spring: friday favorites

Happy Spring!  We are still recovering from a chilly, dreary few days around here, but are poised and ready to celebrate the warmer weather headed our way.

When Spring had officially sprung a few weeks ago, we asked what your favorite first sign of spring is and to post a picture or Instagram on our Facebook page.  We loved seeing all the budding life of the new season!

This lovely photo was taken by Randall Baker and submitted by Melissa Baker.  It sure made us happy!

Earlier this week, one of my more opinionated design-type friends posted something to Facebook to the effect that “mint green is never a good idea”.  If you’ve seen my nursery or my pick for this year’s Spring color, you’ll know that I VERY strongly disagree.  In fact, if you check most of the Spring 2013 Color Forecasts, you’ll find that they disagree as well (like Pantone, Benjamin Moore, Sherwin Williams, and more).  So as a bit of a rebuttal, I’ve rounded up some of my favorite products in the hue, along with some swoon-worthy images I couldn’t help but include.

Color Burst: Our Favorite Spring Colors

PH9 CTS 64 of 17 Color Burst: Our Favorite Spring ColorsSome of our favorite spring colors — Prairie Hive Spring Issue 9

What are your favorite spring colors? For our Spring Issue 9, a few themes came to light — saving space, creative entertaining,  DIYs and, of course, color.

As someone who has been a fan of the Easter egg palette — since birth, really — I couldn’t be happier that color is back in a big way.

This season seems to be replacing last year’s bold brights — aka neon — with hues reminiscent of bright sorbets and sherbets. Think Easter eggs with a bit more saturation. For example, I’m loving the colorful denim that’s in stores right now –it  reminds me of my butter yellow Guess jeans from back in the day. Come on, admit it . You had some of those jeans, too!

In light of all our color love, we each picked our favorite spring colors for our magazine’s Welcome page. So I included our reference photos below for a full perspective.

The lesson: Now is the time to brighten your life with some color, whether you buy a new throw pillow, paint a room, or buy (another) pair of yellow jeans.

Happy (almost) Spring!

Prairie Hive Magazine, Spring 2013 Issue

PH9 COVER web size Prairie Hive Magazine, Spring 2013 Issue

It’s here — our Spring Issue 9! Our featured couple — Daniel and Brie Matlach — are some of the most savvy DIY’ers we’ve ever met.

They fit perfectly into our issue’s theme: saving space, re-purposing items, and saving money — without sacrificing style.

You can read our Cool People, Cool House feature to find out how Daniel and Brie transformed a 722-square-foot garage space into a modern, artful loft space.

They did ALL the work themselves (yes, that means HVAC and the plumbing) and they stuck to their strict budget by being resourceful and creative. Not to mention the art– the couple’s collaborative art projects make the house a true original — including a silhouette project we translate into an easy how-to in our Get Crafty section!

We were so inspired by their colorful choices throughout the home, that we created our Celebrate the Style feature — a garden party in the middle of the city — with their style in mind.

Instead of renting furniture, we show you how to make comfortable seating from free wooden pallets, so your guests can cocktail under the stars while nibbling on bite-sized (and easy to make) snacks.

Spring is all about refreshing your home, working outside, and adding some color to your wardrobe.

We had a great time getting to know the Matlachs, and hope you find some inspiration from them in our Issue 9!

Prairie Hive Magazine – Spring Issue Sneak Peek!

PH9 CPCH 43 of 49 Prairie Hive Magazine Spring Issue Sneak Peek!

Here’s a sneak peek into Prairie Hive Magazine – the Spring Issue, out next Monday, March 11!  Our featured home is a showcase of both efficiency and style – with more storage and creativity packed into around 800 square feet than we could believe!  To top it off – this couple did ALL the work themselves – from plumbing to artwork, with many of the components coming from thrift stores, hardware stores, and yes, even the trash!

For our local Tulsa readers, you might recognize one of the pair from our Great Day Green Country appearances – he’s also known as Average Dan, who appears on the show each week to talk about events coming up around town.  Take it from us, his house is definitely above average!

We don’t want to give too much away – but take a look at a few of our favorite moments from the house – and come back Monday for the whole tour!

Cycling into Spring

DET Bike07 Cycling into Spring

Finally, Spring is showing signs that it will soon be upon us!  Daylight Savings will “spring forward” this weekend (set your clocks!).  We will have more daylight hours after work, and the days will continue to become longer.  The fake-out “blizzard” we experienced here in Tulsa a week ago is behind us and temps have taken root in the 60s lately.  All of this excites me so and leads me to dreaming and scheming of what I shall do in this fresh season!

I’ve been dying to escape the confines of the indoors, so the first thing that popped into my head was bike riding!  I can’t wait to take my bike out for a spin!  I’m not an avid nor dedicated bicyclist, so the cobwebs have accumulated on my little bike that is stashed in the garage awaiting decent weather conditions.  In a week or two, I plan to drag it down to Tulsa River Parks and put some mileage on it (or half-mileage.  you know, start off easy).  In the meantime, I can’t get bike riding out of my daydreams, and I’ve found some great accessories that I could get behind!

healthy goals in a season of reflection

022213 Rebirth healthy goals in a season of reflection

In this season of rebirth and reflection, I find myself more inwardly focused than I’ve recently been. My healthy goals are to focus on myself; mind, body and soul.

022213 Rebirth02 healthy goals in a season of reflection

Trying to keep things simple, I’ve just created a few focus points that I can focus on every day.

  • Stretch – Waking up and stretching with Wai Lana yoga on RSU-Television (just three days now) already seems to be making a difference in my mood, energy and alertness. Ending the day with a little yoga seems calming and might help shut my mind off.
  • Hydrate – Most of the time I drink plenty of water. More than the average person. Lately, I think I just forget. I am so focused on work, I stop thinking about my basic needs. I need to recreate this habit. Right along with hydrate, I plan on including more of the paleo lifestyle into my eating habits. My brief tries have been rewarded with loads of energy, plus all the extra veggies tie right into hydration. (Hydrate is the word Kathleen chose and I think it’s encompassing and right for this goal too.)
  • No sugar – I try not to be too strict with my rules, remember, these are healthy goals, not intended to feel restrictive. This one is about not eating the things I do not expose myself too at home. No starbucks “treats,” no random cookies, cupcakes, m&m’s or other goodies that might show up at the office. I’m not eliminating sugar altogether, just only allowing intake in the form of fruit, honey in my tea and the occasional handful of dark chocolate chips.

022213 Rebirth03 healthy goals in a season of reflection

See, those are easy goals. Not so strict and unattainable that  I can’t reach them and not so limiting that I feel punished. In fact, all of those together might make me feel like a new person!

I just think there’s no better reward than that.

A Tisket, A Tasket…

As a new mom, one of the things I’m most looking forward to is celebrating holidays from a child’s perspective!  While I know my 3 month old isn’t quite aware of what Easter is all about yet, I couldn’t resist putting together an Easter basket for him this year.  Once I started thinking about it, several questions came up and sparked quite a discussion at a recent Prairie Hive meeting…how did your family’s Easter Bunny leave treats?  The same basket year after year, a new throw away version every year, or something utilitarian turned into a gift basket?  What went in your basket…candy only, things you need, fun toys….etc.  The debate went on and on.  And so did my research.

My sister and  I had the same Easter basket each year (I think it’s still living in my garage somewhere)…we set them out the night before for the bunny to fill with treats.  Here are a few of the best keepsake baskets that I found…some are DIYs that a mom could make with love, others I just thought were beautiful baskets to keep for years.

Clockwise: Simple Easter Basket (DIY), The Purl Bee;  Felted Wool Easter Basket, Maddy and Me on Etsy; Vintage Woven Wicker Basket, Dear Macy Vintage on Etsy; Dyed Heirloom Easter Basket (DIY), A Subtle Revelry.

While searching, I noticed some great fabric options as well…less traditional, but soft, reusable, and easy for little ones to carry.

SVeasterfabric A Tisket, A Tasket...

Clockwise: Felt Easter Bags (DIY), Martha Stewart; Fabric Bunny Basket (DIY), Disdressed; Fabric Basket, NikJ. Designs on Etsy.

And the last school of thought…find a utilitarian container, fill it with gifts, and then repurpose someplace else in the house.  Here are a few of my favorites:

Clockwise: Small Handled Folding Crate, The Container Store; Woven Picnic Basket, Target; A Tad Plaid Storage, Land of Nod; Market Basket, Covet & Carry;  Horizon Crunch Can, The Container Store.

And of course, I couldn’t resist putting some goodies in these baskets.  I hate the idea of loading up with too much candy, so tried to think of some fun items that fit the holiday but will last year round.  This year, I bought several books to read to my baby – I think I’ll make it an Easter tradition!  Fellow Hive Mom Lisa puts PJs and swimsuits in her kids’ baskets every year, or you can always find some un-atrocious bunny items or take something basic like crayons and kick it up a notch.

Issue 5 – Spring 2012!

PH5pg01 Issue 5 Spring 2012!

Issue 5, Spring 2012 is all about fearlessly using what you love to make your home a true representation of yourself.  Our homeowner, one of our favorite Tulsa trendsetters, has an extensive (and quirky!) art collection displayed throughout her cozy downtown loft, each piece connected to one of her passions, from music to her family to local history.  Her ever expanding displays are a great testimony to the design philosophy to just trust your instincts when it comes to your surroundings.

We got inspired by Mary Beth’s youthful spirit (and her robot collection) and decided to make our entertaining section for kids (or kids at heart!).  We are in love with the adorable cupcakes and candies at this party…stay tuned to the blog this week for a complete how-to!  Special thanks to Fab Lab Tulsa for helping us make our ideas for the robot puzzles come to fruition for the photo shoot!  Since not every city has a FabLab location, we also included a simple DIY puzzle that could be used at a party…or as a rainy day craft for your kiddos!

We also have a new section, PH Travels, where will be taking road trips around our region to find the best food, shopping and entertainment…and sharing it all with you!

Enjoy!

Happy Weekend!

Hoping to see a little less of this over the weekend…lots to do out there!

Weather permitting, I plan to visit both the Blue Dome Arts Festival and Mayfest this weekend…and wish I could be wearing this while I cruise the streets for art and other goodies. (Image found on Pinterest)

In more realistic fashion goals, I do think I’ll run by Shoe Gypsy and pick up these lovelies

While we are talking outdoor activities, I spotted this and thought it would be super cute for a picnic or lake excursion.

Last week, the glitter wall was a big hit, and one reader suggested using it for a photobooth backdrop.  Love it!  While you’re thinking photobooths, check out these fantastic props from oh happy day! Wish I had these for my party last fall! Next time….

And for no reason other than general fantasticness…Jewel Box System, for lighting, room dividers or EVEN a photobooth backdrop.  A reeeeaaaallllly fancy photobooth backdrop.  One can dream.

Next week, look forward to some Prairie Hive Mag sneak peeks next week as we get the final versions of our photos rounded up…”Like” us on Facebook, Follow us on Twitter or Subscribe (all links in navigation bar above) for some extras!

Have a great weekend!
