Next week, will you have the kids home from school for a few hectic days of cooking in a full house of in-laws?  Need to keep them busy?  Well now is the time to gather materials for some Thanksgiving crafts to keep the little pilgrims busy.  Here are a few Thanksgiving crafts for kids to inspire your own.

I love the idea of a Thankful Tree as shown above.  It’s a great reminder of all the good things in our life in the midst of the bustling season.

These pilgrims made of little clay pots, wooden balls and felt are adorable and would keep young ones busy for a while!

A fuzzy turkey made with a toilet paper roll would make for a festive table place card, and an personal way to display what each person at your table is thankful for.

This year, I have so much to be thankful for, I don’t even know where to begin.  Even though life can feel hectic and overwhelming sometimes (or, let’s face it, MOST of the time), it’s so nice to have a reason to slow down and really think about how and why we got here, and why we are truly blessed to have so many things to keep us occupied, active and OK, maybe a little nuts.

This year, my growing household prepares to welcome a baby into the world soon, and we are so grateful for all our family and friends and all the support they have given us.  Both my husband and I are thankful for our careers and that we are able to both make a living doing what we love and being surrounded by people that we enjoy.  We have a home that we love and have worked on together, a menagerie of healthy pets that keep us laughing every day, and still seem to manage to make time for each other, despite our hectic and ever changing schedules.

I also want to take a moment to say a special thank you to our Prairie Hive team.  This project started last year as a small idea I couldn’t seem to let go of, and I am unbelievably thankful (and surprised) that each of them joined in, taking an absolute leap of faith that we could just wing it and end up with something we are proud of.  It’s a great deal of volunteered time, bartered services and crossing our fingers each time we put out an issue (and each week as we blog), and I can’t express enough gratitude to each of them for what they do.  We still have leaps and bounds of growing and learning to do, but the enthusiasm and passion that each member of the team puts into the group has kept us going forward throughout the year.

Thanks to everyone who has worked with us, from the core team to our contributors, sponsors, event partners and all of those who have supported us along the way!

Now, since this is my “weekend roundup” post for the week, a few of my favorite Thanksgiving finds from around the web:

A list of 2011 Thanksgiving Trends…did you include any of these in your festivities?

10 easy Thanksgiving morning recipes (I think these would be great for the day after too!).

Ginger Spiced Cider to warm up before or after the big meal (or maybe after that late day walk?). Mmmmm.

Cute Wishbone accessory round-up.

A great “Thankful Box” place setting idea for the kids (or the grown-ups) table.

And my favorite kind of table settings….Last Minute.  In case you’re still working on what to set out today.

Have a great long weekend everyone!

A Fresh and Easy Thanksgiving Table

A Fresh and Easy Thanksgiving Table

When I begin to put together a tablescape for a dinner, I start by looking around the house.  Although it is fun to set a beautiful table, it’s just not always possible to spend a great deal of time shopping for decorations when all of the food needs to be made too!  For this table, I found inspiration right outside my door.

I love Flowering Cabbage- I have it planted all over the place.  It is such a unique Fall plant and putting it on the table brings the garden inside with the most beautiful green, pink and purple hues.  Planted in pots or other containers, it is low enough to allow conversation to flow across the table and unlike cut flowers, it will last beautifully in pots on the patio or planted in the garden for the rest of the season.

After I decided to use cabbage, I pulled out a natural linen tablecloth, white plates and white napkins.  These are what I have, so they’re what I used!  I also have manged to collect a significant amount of mercury glass votives, so I pulled those out, too.   Although mercury glass often is associated with Christmas, I think it is sparkly and festive and can be used for any occasion.  Get it out for Thanksgiving and keep it out through the holidays!  Also, mercury glass is available at many stores and a variety of price points.  There’s a great selection right now at Pottery Barn and West Elm and I’ve bought it in the past at Wal-Mart and Target- so keep an eye out!

When I was out and about searching for the right cabbage for the table, I found these great pots at Ted and Debbie’s Flower and Garden shop.  I could have used the terracotta pots that I already have, but I love the silver at the top of these and how well it ties in with the mercury glass and flatware.  They will look great on my patio when Thanksgiving is over!  I also found the two ribbons tied around the napkins.  The purple brings out the colors in the cabbage and the wider burlap ribbon adds texture and ties in the color of the tablecloth and the pots.

Finally, the small pumpkins add a fresh take on a traditional Fall decoration.  The white adds a modern touch and does not compete with the other colors on the table.  Plus, they’re just really cute!  I was hoping to do bigger, carved pumpkins but soon realized there would be no room for food on the table.  It’s easy to get carried away setting the table, so don’t forget why your guests are coming.  Be sure to leave plenty of room for platters, trays and bowls full of food.  Keep it simple and have fun!

Happy table setting and

Happy Thanksgiving!
